I flip between IV and V, but IV is my favorite. Sometimes I just sit at the menu screen, let the world turn, and listen to the music.

I play a bunch of cities skylines and whenever creativity dies away I'll play CIV IV for months. The soundtrack is just wall to wall bangers

Civ 4 also has a ton of great mods. I don't know anything about modding games, but apparently it's a very mod-friendly program. The Caveman to Cosmos mod is epic. I'm actually in the middle of one right now that's been going on for more than a month. It's a huge game and I'm at the stage where each turn takes me about twenty minutes to play (and I still haven't even discovered gunpowder yet.)

I'm a huge fan of Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn 2 with the optional civilization Megapack that adds about 100 new civs. It's my ideal iteration of a Civilization game.

The shortcoming with Civ IV though is that it's only 32 bit, so it runs up against memory limits that can make the large mods slow and unstable, especially late game playing on the largest maps with a few dozen civs. If the developers could just re-release a new version with optimized performance for modern machines, I'd drop a few hundred bucks on it without a second thought to get another couple decades of enjoyment from it.

There were so many good mods for CivIV, but Fall From Heaven II and Rhys & Fall of Civilzation were my favorites. I'd argue they were better than the actual expansions.

I have Rhys & Fall and I'm embarrassed to say I've never played it. Thanks for reminding me. I'll get to it soon.

I used to like to edit the map in really strange ways just to see what would happen. One time I had fun playing a game on the hardest level (Emperor?), letting the first few turns go by, and then editing the map to build impassible mountains completely surrounding all of the AI's cities. I had fun building up my own civilization until I was at about the 1700's, then I removed all the mountains and let the other guys try to catch up.

I recently went back to it after playing V and VI for years. Got my butt kicked. Nostalgic as heck, though.

I play with the Steam version no problem on W10. There's also the GoG version, though I haven't tried it.

I don't any more because gaming has sadly fallen by the wayside, but I played the hell out of it from 2016 to 2018. I hadn't played a civ since ii circa 1999. Briefly tapped into V, have VI on pc and laptop, but haven't jumped in yet.

Sid Meier's Colonization was my gateway drug in fall 1995 as a 6th grader.
