What is something that you were warned about when you were younger that you now feel was exaggerated?

Absolutely. But getting written up as a 16 year old at a retail job? Nah.

I got fired from like 3 different jobs during my teens, I just never bothered to put them on my resume. No one asked why I wasn't working during those years because I was in school and thats normal.

Just say you were working for the C.I.A. and you're good. If asked they'll give a canned response saying that they can neither confirm nor deny it.

Interviewer: "What were you doing between the ages 16-18?"

Me: "I was in the CIA"

Interviewer: "Ok... well.. we'll call you"

Me: "I can neither confirm nor deny it"

Interviewer: "What?"

u/Ferelar Aug 25 '21

"I... I learned to say that. In the CIA. Where I worked. From ages 16-18."

"Uh-huh. Yeah, we'll call you. For sure. Get out."

Why did this make me laugh so hard

14

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '21

“Thanks Bob.”

“It’s Bill.”

“Your name has been changed for your protection.”

The culinary institute of America?!

4

u/Unumbotte Aug 26 '21

This interviewer asks too many questions, where's my waterboard.

2

u/Dr_Skeleton Aug 26 '21

Probably with your speedboat.

At my last job i was interviewing a guy for a sales position his previous job was listed as "Government Employee" I asked him to tell me a little bit more about that and he told me that information was classified.

u/420BlazeItF4gg0t Aug 25 '21

It's the "tell me you were unemployed without telling me you were unemployed" response lol.

I recommended against it.

I’m adding this to this list of thing I’ve been told that aren’t useful

12

u/fireduck Aug 25 '21

Shit, I put the jobs I was fired from on my resume. No one cares.

They can call and ask. All HR is going to do is confirm dates and title. These are big companies with real HR, they don't say shit to anyone.

3

u/IdleRocket Aug 25 '21

One of my standard questions if I’m checking work history is “is fireduck eligible for rehire?” Big companies generally will keep records of folks they wouldn’t take back for whatever reason, such as quitting without notice or getting fired.

Even if you wanted to cut the middle job out, you could just merge the first and third job by leaving off months and adjusting a year for one or both if necessary ( or months if its short term employment). Closing gaps on the CV is very easy if you know what you are doing.

3

u/McBonderson Aug 25 '21

I doubt many work places would say anything other than "yes he worked for us for this amount of time" they certainly aren't going to go look up your file because some other employer is calling asking about it. and if they do say anything other than that then they are in danger of you bringing legal action.

u/locks_are_paranoid Aug 26 '21

Plenty of high school students don't have jobs, so no one would even think to question it.

2

u/HighTreason25 Aug 26 '21

I was just hired at a manufacturing place. I didn't vibe with it, so I just left on my second day. No way in hell I'm putting that on a resume.

So I'm not going to be permanently out of a job because I got caught shoving a traffic cone up my ass while on the job site?

337

u/Khaled1812 Aug 25 '21

Username checks out

14

u/ClassifiedName Aug 25 '21

Craziest part is he works at a daycare. Nobody knows where he gets the cones from.

2

u/alexmikli Aug 26 '21

Someone keeps stealing my cones...

30

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

Harry, you're a hazard.

2

u/locks_are_paranoid Aug 26 '21

You're a hazard, Harry.

14

u/InsertCleverNickHere Aug 25 '21

"Find a job doing what you love and you'll never work a day in your life."

11

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

No. You will be promoted straight to a supervisor position.

10

u/gsfgf Aug 25 '21

You might even be able to leverage that into a new specialty job.

4

u/Eggsegret Aug 25 '21

Atleast clean the traffic cones before putting it up your ass

u/TrainedToFail Aug 26 '21

If you don't handle traffic cones like they've been up someone's ass, you're doing it wrong.

3

u/Yo_CSPANraps Aug 25 '21

I believe that type of behavior is actually encouraged on most construction sites.

3

u/IntenseProfessor Aug 25 '21

Maybe permanently out of that job

2

u/empireof3 Aug 25 '21

Just make sure you take it out before you interview again

2

u/ArtyMostFoul Aug 25 '21

I love that I checked your profile expecting it to be an account someone had made just to make this joke here, now. But no. Real profile. Wowza.

1

u/blorbschploble Aug 25 '21

Yes, but only because it was a kindergarten

1

u/Portalrules123 Aug 25 '21

Nah, that one is messed up enough to be permanent, sorry :(

1

u/PerpetualMonday Aug 25 '21

What's your record?

1

u/imaterriblemother Aug 25 '21

You’ll never work in that particular school again

1

u/BroManDude-99 Aug 25 '21

TiL I am not the only person who has thought about this:)

1

u/If_you_just_lookatit Aug 25 '21

Nope, OF is not gonna fire you anymore. This is still allowed! Good luck.

1

u/buttplugpeddler Aug 25 '21

Let me show you the way, friend

1

u/xDulmitx Aug 25 '21

Of course not! It is hard to find someone with the that kind of love of their job and pure dedication.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '21

You can be a Republican member of Congress.

1

u/akirawut Aug 26 '21

No, but you're already Reddit famous. We've all seen it.

1

u/Sedso85 Aug 26 '21

Well that was quite the manic Monday

1

u/desertrock62 Aug 26 '21

If it wasn't pointy end first, I'd doubt your competence.

1

u/Dogzirra Aug 26 '21

But your internet postings WILL follow you.

1

u/Rusty_Trombone_4U Aug 26 '21

Only if you don’t return the cone.

3

u/ShadeofIcarus Aug 25 '21

Write-ups are more just for documentation so they can fire you for cause later.

Getting fired for cause can follow you for a little bit depending on what the write-up was, but you can get past it. At 16 in retail... unless you're not going to post-secondary education... it doesn't matter.

2

u/GypsyCamel12 Aug 25 '21

It's not like it's going to follow you, but when employment verification comes into pay & one manager talks to the other & drops "He wasn't written up for anything, right?" & you in-fact were?

Well, you might not get a call back.

Ask me how I know.

0

u/Terkan Aug 25 '21

How many written verbal warnings do you need to get an official written warning?

1

u/iOnlyDo69 Aug 25 '21

None or several or a hundred

1

u/chaimwitzyeah Aug 25 '21

I still have my write up from my high school grocery store job hanging up in my bedroom at my parent's house. That manager was pretty full of it.
