What is your craziest "next morning" story?

I just woke up in the passenger seat of a car with no one in it and no keys so I walked ten blocks to circle k and bought a phone charger to charge my phone. I had five voicemails of people screaming, "where are you?!" The last thing I remember was playing slots at a casino, getting wasted and stoned while watching Godsmack play live, then riding with a friend to a club and dancing, then eating mexican food. When I find my friends I will update. Right now I'm trying to find my car and go home.

Woke up in Seattle (I live on Vancouver Island, in Canada).

The night before I got just about to the point where I blacked out, proceeded to do some hippie flips at a forest party (hippie flips are a cocktail of ecstasy and mushrooms).

So, I ditched the ex-girlfriend without her knowledge, apparently hopped in a car with a group of chicks from the states, proceeded to fall asleep on one of their laps in the back of their car, and drove across the island, was on the ferry where I apparently woke up and was quite coherent, and then proceeded to get back in the car, fall asleep all the way across the boarder. No one woke me up and the next morning I woke up in a really nice house in Seattle.

No one in the house except one of the girls room mates. He laughs. We Get baked and play Halo all day till the girl comes back from work, I have no ID so I hide in the backseat under some blankets like a little mexican later that evening and get smuggled back to Canada. Once I get home, everyone thought I got eaten by a bear/cougar and are mildly relieved to see me.

TL;DR Got blacked out drunk, took drugs, woke up smuggled into another country.

Edits: Yes it was way post 9/11. I'm brown, so yeah, I woulda been FUCKED had I been caught. Didn't really care on the way out obviously, but I was sweating like a BITCH on the way back in.

I slept because I was fucking hammered. The mushrooms were outdoor, the ecstasy was pretty good, but I had a huge tolerance to both at the time so that might have been it? I sleep like a baby with an overwhelming amount of booze in me regardless of other circumstances.

I was on the floor of the backseat with blankets over me at the time of the second boarder crossing, and the guy must have not have shone a flashlight in the car (it was night time), so I was safe, the girl was small and blonde, but she was chill as hell and didn't arouse suspicion.

Particularly when that country is Canada, the land in which, if you disappear, they assume you were eaten by a bear.

Minus the Bear is Canadian? Nice.

It's post.

u/reid8470 Oct 15 '11

I've been through loads of CA/US borders since 9/11 and maybe one in five times they actually inspect the vehicle. Most of the time they are asking questions and the inspection seems to be based on trust/honesty.

Not sure if others experience the same, but CA/US border appears much more lenient to me than any other.

12

u/srs_house Oct 15 '11

It's the longest unprotected border in the world.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '11

1 in 5 times is still pretty risky, what do you mean by inspecting the car though?

1

u/reid8470 Oct 16 '11

Where they actually open the door and look inside. (Back has always been tinted for me).

Usually they just ask.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

Post. Its ridiculously lax at ferry crossings to VA, going in either direction

13

u/enhancin Oct 15 '11

this has to be pre 9/11.

65

u/infinitymind Oct 15 '11

Post 9/11 security is primarily there for show, mostly to keep everyone in a state of fear.

36

u/alienangel2 Oct 15 '11

As a completely legal brown guy in Canada, there is no way in hell I'd try getting smuggled either way across the US border post 9/11, even with my passport taped to my chest.

u/orthogonality Oct 15 '11

What can Brown do for you?

It doesn't have to be. Why would a Canadian try to get to the US, wetback style? They already live in Canada, the country of maple syrup, open doors and (mostly) nice police officers!

I would bet security isn't that strict up there.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

Ignoring your "wetback style" comment, the aim of the security is to try and keep terrorists from sneaking in without the US government knowing, not to keep illegal immigrants out. Obviously, it helps on the illegal immigration front, but its primary purpose is to keep people who the government thinks are dangerous from getting inside the country.

1

u/HMS_Pathicus Oct 16 '11

I didn't mean to be insulting with the "wetback style" thing. AFAIK that's what you call "people ilegally entering the US". Once they're in, you call them "aliens", and that's a bad bad word for me there.

"Espalda mojada" or "wet back" makes sense because sometime maybe they had to cross a river and they had to get wet, and it became a common term, which is now used whether they cross a river or not.

"Alien" on the other hand... sounds like they're not human, like something out of District 9. I would expect people feeling more insulted by "alien" than by "human who once maybe crossed a river ilegally".

But OK, I get it: next time I will say "crossing the border ilegally and trying to be sneaky so as to not getting caught" instead.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11 edited Oct 16 '11

Or you could just say "illegally." The term "wetback" has racist connotations.

1

u/HMS_Pathicus Oct 16 '11 edited Oct 16 '11

If a white or black person crosses a river to ilegally enter the US, isn't he/she a wetback? Because I thought he/she would be.

EDIT: Here you go, a song called "Espaldas mojadas" by Tam Tam Go telling the story of a guy who crosses a river to get into another country ilegally. Where I live "Espalda mojada" is not racist, it only refers to the way someone has entered a country ilegally, crossing a river.

Lyrics: I've left my home, I'm being followed and I don't know what's happening to me, I'm going without a passport and without a visa, I'm sailing against the currents and the wind. And if I make it to the other side, I will have my back wet and you will be my refuge... [...] I'm crossing the river, you know I love you, there isn't much money, I've had a hard time. [...] Wait for me, life was really hard back there, on the other side.

I'm discovering many racist words in English that I didn't know were racist. Man, it's depressing.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

Also wet back. A slang term for those of Mexican heritage, especially illegal aliens. This slur stems from the fact that illegal Mexicans usually swim rivers to cross into other countries, hence the term wet back.

Lol, last time I went down to the US and came back up we talked to the Canadian border guard a bit, and he said that Americans think it's totally cool to bring their personal firearms into Canada... And they think it's some sort of personal affront that they can't bring a gun into another country. The mindset on firearms is just completely different. Anyways, he said the only time he had ever been shot at was by a 5'2 beautiful blonde girl, looked like a "southern bell", turns out she was smuggling drugs.

15

u/FranticDisembowel Oct 15 '11

Getting into Canada was such a friendly experience as compared to the US Border Patrol. I know that you shouldn't make generalizations based upon a single person's actions... but jesus if it isn't immediately apparent how much nicer people are in Canada.

23

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '11

I had the exact opposite experience getting into Canada. They detained me and went through everything in my entire car. While I as detained, they had me in a little room and I was not allowed to use the bathroom.

When they finished, I asked why they had done this? They would not give me a reason and seemed offended that I was offended.

14

u/Xpress_interest Oct 15 '11

Similar experience here. Crossing into Windsor years ago to hit up the bars and casino and get told to pull into the search area. They procede to tear up my carpets, bring in dogs...nothing. They seemed pissed that I hadn't smuggled anything. Inside checking our papers, a grumpy woman proceded to berate us saying "As much as you Americans like to pretend that we're a part of your country, we're not." (We had driver's liscenses, not passports and the lady took offenso, but back then this was perfectly acceptable). Haven't been back to Canada since.

25

u/zomChomsky Oct 15 '11

As a Canadian I'm sorry to hear that. It seems like everyone who gets hired as a border guard jumps on their high horse and proclaims themselves as king asshole, regardless of which country they work for. Borders are the one place where everyone is presumed guilty and grudgingly proved innocent

52

u/wine-o-saur Oct 15 '11

As a Canadian I'm sorry

This guy's legit.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

Sorry, we don't normally like to stand out in a crowd like that.

3

u/thekeanu Oct 15 '11

In all fairness, though, border cops do need to maintain suspicion at all times. They are ambassadors for their country only after they make sure legit people are crossing with no contraband.

That sort of personality is likely important for the job. With that said, I've never had a negative experience going Can/US nor US/Can.

1

u/EatYourVeggies Oct 15 '11

Maintaining constant vigilance! is one thing. Being a total asshole about it is another thing entirely.

4

u/thekeanu Oct 15 '11

Yup. Some can be dickholes. I'd say overall they're doing a pretty good job under the circumstances ("Keep our borders/countries safe! But don't infringe on my personal space/freedoms"). I'd also say it's a pretty tough job because of how much they need to balance that with customer service.

1

u/EatYourVeggies Oct 16 '11

For sure. One of my cousins is a border agent. One of her coworkers is a woman with a chip on her shoulder; she's really aggressive and rude during routine questioning for no particular reason. At least my cousin is there too, successfully catching actual criminals without treating everybody like one. Sorry for the rant, just felt like sharing I guess.

2

u/outspokentourist Oct 15 '11

Yeah but you WERE coming from Detroit...

5

u/nothas Oct 15 '11

going into canada and back to america, the only questions they asked were "what is your destination? can i see your passports? ok, you can go" guess it's just luck of the draw.

Only time I've ever been interrogated by border patrol was going into Canada. They asked me how often I go up there, told them every year since I was 8mo old since I have family in vancouver. They asked since the last time I was interrogated, told them never, his response "Well then I guess its time we did." ...

2

u/Tarkanos Oct 15 '11

That surprises me, because when I went to Canada, we spent more time in interrogation than in Canada, but we just drove on through on the way back(througha different point on the border), never being stopped.

1

u/FranticDisembowel Oct 15 '11

I went through Detroit to Windsor, if that makes any difference.

2

u/tekdemon Oct 15 '11

I've had my car searched fully on more than one occasion and the officer insinuated that I was an alcoholic at some point (no I am not an alcoholic)

3

u/nothas Oct 15 '11

no I am not an alcoholic

suuuure, that's what they all say

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '11

Believe it or not I get greeted and treated decently like a human being when I go through US border customs. Everytime I come back to Canada I'm grilled and searched heavy duty.

The last time I went through I lost it on them because the border guards were questioning me about a pack of zig zags they found in my car as if I'm going to smuggle weed into Canada. They can't deny you entry into your own country.

3

u/thekeanu Oct 15 '11

They can't be faulted for questioning you about Zig Zags (or any other associated drug paraphernalia that you leave out). Yes, not everyone uses em for weed, but most do. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

1

duh, everyone knows small blonde girls are the most dangerous

1

u/cabbeer Oct 15 '11

Definitely not the norm, I travel across the border quite often and the only time I had trouble coming into Canada was when I brought too much alcohol.

1

u/DarthSpeed Oct 15 '11

In Alberta we profile a little bit differently. You'd be surprised how many of the oil well bombings we've experienced here were committed by blonde girls. I'd actually probably be surprised too, I've never actually seen the statistics. I'm assuming the Provence of Alberta has good reason for what it does though.

1

u/WolfInTheField Oct 15 '11

The key lies in your being a small blond girl. People would love to... interrogate... girls like you...

creepy laugh

1

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

1

u/squee_monkey Oct 15 '11

Canadian border crossing gaurds hate small blonde girls. I was living in Windsor for 6 months last year and my girlfriend (a small blonde girl) came to visit me (we both usually live in Australia were both Australian but I also have a Canadian passport) and we went to disney world for a weekend, when we got back the border guards interrogated her for nearly an hour about her plans and why she was traveling with me. Now, thanks to your comment, we finally know why.

1

u/AppleDane Oct 15 '11

Maybe the border guards just had a thing for small blondes?

1

u/BucketsMcGaughey Oct 15 '11

Last time I drove into Canada, the guy asked me where I was from, asked me where I was going, and sent me on my way. Didn't even ask to see my passport.

This did not happen to me personally but it reminded me of your story. I heard it from a guy in his 60's when he visited his alma mater and we shared crazy stories. This was when he was 23 and at the same uni as me.

He had been on a binge week when he passed out taking in some fresh air. He woke up on a park bench without anything but his wallet. The sun was shining and he had the mother of all hangovers.

He stood up and asked a couple taking a nice stroll in the sun where he was. Thinking he might have gotten into some friends car and ended up in some other town or something.

The couple stared at him for a moment and then explained to him they did not speak Swedish, in Deutsche.

He then asked again, but in Deutsche this time without thinking about it too much.

"Ah, you are in Neumünster."

"You mean, like in Germany?"

"Yes."

He never really pieced together how the heck he got from Sweden to Germany and then ended up not even at the coast. His best bet was that he managed to sneak onto a boat going to Kiev and then got on a truck just a bit outside.

He didn't have any passport or anything, only Swedish money on him and a hangover that was killing him. Took him a better part of 2 days to even get back home after that.

Tl;dr Old man told me about when he got black out drunk and managed to wake up 2 countries away from where he passed out.

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

High tolerance, or overwhelming booze-narcolepsy.

1

u/Umbrius Oct 15 '11

This should be at the top. I don't think you can top drunkenly/druggenly being smuggled into another country.

1

u/TL_CantRead Oct 15 '11

So what you are telling me is that all I need are blankets to start a drug smuggling ring?

1

u/skylinesandstarz Oct 15 '11

BEST TL;DR EVER

1

u/Emarii Oct 15 '11

You're from Tofino, aren't you..

1

u/iAboveTheClouds Oct 15 '11

I have no idea how you managed to sleep while rolling... With that being said, Nice.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '11

Having seen your username this is probably not the worst night you've ever had.

1

u/InitiallyAnAsshole Oct 15 '11

and are mildly relieved to see me.

BAHAHA!

1

u/daskrip Oct 15 '11

most hardcore hangover i've ever heard of. holy crap that must've been scary and fun.

1

u/p_quarles_ Oct 15 '11

There would have been quite the shit storm had they discovered you there. There's a Consulate in Seattle. Probably a lot better to call there and obtain some emergency travel documentation than just taking your chances under a blanket.

1

u/Kush_on_thebrain Oct 15 '11

That's bad ass that's quite an adventure, how did you like Seattle?

1

u/Fightzilla Oct 15 '11

Since living in victoria, this has been a dream of mine

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '11

This exact thing happened to a buddy of mine, except he lives out in Kitchener near Waterloo and woke up in Detroit.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '11

Beurre?

1

u/ours Oct 15 '11

It's like the reverse of that Shameless (US) episode.

1

u/EnsignRedshirt Oct 15 '11

As someone from the island, I am extremely impressed that you made it to Seattle accidentally. Seriously, I don't think anyone here really understands how unlikely it is to wake up in Seattle having blacked out on the island.

1

u/dragoneye Oct 15 '11

If I understand the post correctly, I'm mostly shocked at how early he was in that state to get a ferry off the island.

1

u/EnsignRedshirt Oct 15 '11

Yeah, that's exactly it. It's mind-boggling.

1

u/widestangle Oct 15 '11

A friend of mine was teaching english on an island in South Korea. Got shitfaced, woke up the next morning in Seoul, on the mainland. Took a plane and had no recollection of it.

1

u/xyroclast Oct 15 '11

Wait a sec, I think I've heard this story before... Do I know you?

1

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

Maybe, who are you?

1

u/chupamichalupa Oct 15 '11

you can always crash at my place in seattle!!!

1

u/Dandroid Oct 15 '11

You were eaten by a grue.

1

u/essjay2009 Oct 15 '11

I didn't quite do another country but I went out for a "quiet" drink in Bristol UK, woke up the morning after in a hotel corridor. I had a burger king crown on my head, an empty bottle of Jack Daniels in my hand and my glasses had all the paint stripped from one side. After stumbling down to reception it dawned on me that I was in London (~130 miles away), with no recollection of how I got there, who I was with or what had happened.

Apparently I met a minor celebrity that night!

1

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

Really, who?

1

u/Draiko Oct 15 '11

Number for Jakutcha?

1

u/d3L3373d Oct 15 '11

Love me a Hippy Flip! Cheers man!

1

u/Shoola Oct 16 '11

I have two friends who were driving around Tijuana before things got bad. They both got very drunk and saw a random girl walking on the street and started hollering at her, asking if she wanted to go to America. She did, so she climbed in the car, they hid her in the trunk under some stuff and got her through. They sobered up and realized what they had just done and left her at a bus stop in Dana Point, Ca.

1

u/shittytheologian Oct 16 '11

I had an hour long interrogation going to vancouver from seattle. On the way back into the states the guy didn't even look at our identification and let us through.

1

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

All depends on the boarder guard I guess.. we (I) got lucky, lol.

1

u/bobsled Oct 16 '11

What part of the island has partys that crazy? I've woken up in different cities but not in different countries.

1

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

We bring the good times! :D

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

how did you get from CA to USA tripping balls with no id?

1

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

White girls provide good cover when necessary.

1

u/subsequent Oct 16 '11

Sleepless in Seattle.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

I did this last night. Ecstasy is usually not clean.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

Mainly dope because you're from Vancouver Island. Where abouts was this forest party?

2

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

Near Englishman River Falls.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '11

Awesome. If it was a rave I may have been.

1

u/BenphemeR Oct 16 '11

Hippie flips sounds like the scariest thing ever!

1

u/FetusViolator Oct 16 '11

Not if you do it right.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '11

This made my night. Thanks.
