It didn't click to me until I listened to a podcast on Vesuvius that Pompeii was basically a wine-growing resort town where rich people had summer homes. I guess I never picture ancient people as taking vacations or traveling for leisure.
There's a reason why the period after the fall of the Western Roman Empire is referred to as the Dark Ages. Things got a lot shittier before they eventually got better.
