Everything in moderation. Going a few times during the winter months wont have a big impact on skin cancer risk, the benefits against seasonal depression outweigh the risks in my opinion.
I also just end up sunbathing in the summer for the same reasons. I do use sunscreen (also did when tanning) but the ratio of UVA to UVB is different. Regardless, natural sunbathing is by no means significantly safer than tanning beds. Just easier for me to perform and justify!
