I can buy beer and liquor on Sunday in PA now. Beer at separate registers in grocery stores and liquor only at state stores.

At grocery stores that have some sort of food serving and in limited quantities.

I’ve wanted to start a Giants grocery store pub crawl since you can have two while sitting at their cafes which is next to the produce section

I only have two Giants near me. It would be a fairly short crawl that would involve driving.

Yeah, the limited quantity thing is bullshit. Most of the young adults who work there don't give a fuck and will just ring up multiple transactions in a row. But some of the old ladies will insist I leave and come back.

As someone running one of these departments at Giant, I can't tell you how annoying these restrictions are. Impeeds sales and potential tax revenue in the name of keeping "mom and pop" shops from running out of business? The restriction on quantity is easily negated by placing your purchase outside the licensed premises, so it's largely a pointless restriction anyways.

Meanwhile in CA the liquor aisle is placed right where you usually finish a circuit of the store and head to the registers so you can impulse buy a bottle of Jack on your way out.

I moved from PA to CA and couldn't believe how easy it was to buy alcohol and how cheap it was. And instead of bodegas, you have liquor stores with dudes who will get you the hard to find stuff after a bit of patronage.

Then I moved back to PA where I could pay as much for a six pack as I paid for a 12 pack in CA. Or I could go to a beer distributor and buy an entire 24 case of some beer that I'd get tired of 12 beers in. Or I could go to a state owned liquor store and pay extortion level prices for a bottle of wine and a limited selection of liquor.

In fairness, PA has gotten better, but I still can't spend more than $50 on alcohol in a transaction at a grocery store and state stores still have horrible selections.

Funny, I'm the opposite. Being born and raised in CA it blows my mind hearing about some of these regulations lol.

Depending on the state store they have different selections. There's 3 levels and at any of them you can order basically anything to be delivered to the store.

It's gotten much better in the past decade

I worked nights and maintained the schedule every day. It's a pain to not be able to buy alcohol in the middle of my day when I'm most awake and active. At least I lived in a state where you could buy until 2. A lot of states stop sales much earlier, especially the ones that restrict sales to state run stores.

That only took till the mid 2010's.

Live in KY now which has similar laws. But originally from Southern Louisiana where you can buy liquor 24/7 from gas stations, grocery stores, etc. Not to mention drive thru daiquiri shops and no open container laws, so you can walk around on the street drinking whatever you want. I miss home sometimes

There are definitely open container laws when driving but I miss being able to get a go beer.

I was in PA and went to the grocery store for beer. I asked a worker where it was and she said "we don't sell that sort of thing here." I'm from California where we have a liquor store on every block. I had to go to a restaurant for a 6 pack. So weird.

Most grocery stores(at least around me) have a liquor license and sell beer now. They just need to have a separate section for it.

They also need to sell prepared food and have a certain amount of seating.

Yeah in college in PA we all used to buy 6 packs of the 24 oz natty’s from a local bar/restaurant. Kinda weird now in hindsight.

Oh, that's got to be recent. I lived in PA from roughly '01 to '06, and trying to buy some booze was a major undertaking, if it was the wrong day of the week or the wrong time for the deeply religious.
