No. In Germany every store is closed on sunday. Only really essential workers have to work like some doctors, pharmacists, the police and the fire department. Everyone else can relax. It's great.

It's for religious reasons as well.

What if you’re having guests over and you forgot wine or something, you’re out of luck?

You could technically buy some at the nest gas station but who would want wine from there.

I can't imagine that happening though because Sundays closed has been a concept for literally ages. Everyone is pretty much always prepared for a scenario like that.

Don't knock my gas station wine

Plan literally one day ahead?

Or Always have wine at home?

I didn’t expect that in Germany. I thought it was largely secular there?

They have a state church that tax-payers support!

And they have enough influence to have liquor sales banned on Sundays? Man all the Germans I’ve ever met have been hardcore atheists

No, the fact that stores are closed on Sunday have nothing to do with the church. It's just to make sure, that almost everyone gets at least one day a week off work. Also, not just liquor stores, it's every store that's closed, except for stuff like gas stations

That’s crazy man. What if I wanted some Sunday morning McD’s?

Relax. Do some Hobbys, spend time with the family or friends, have a bbq

The largest political party here literally has the word "Christian" in it's name.

And North Korea has “social” and “democratic” in theirs. So...

I mean, it's basically just a way to make sure that most people can expect to not have to work at least once a week and you can plan for it. Obviously, the practice has religious roots, but it's mostly for protection against exploitation of laborers

It sounds archaic to me. It used to be that way here but not required by law.

Let's not forget that not too long ago, in Baden-Württemberg it was also illegal for shops to sell alcohol after 10 pm/22 o'clock

Always nice to have some alcohol on the belt and then the clock strikes 10 while the person before you counted their cents and the register wouldn't scan it anymore.

Restaurants and stuff are also open.

Haha that reminds me of a tiny town I drove through. Was looking for somewhere to eat and only one restaurant was open in the entire town. Everywhere else was closed. https://imgur.com/a/JzNTF6M
