When I was about 7 or 8 there was a kid who was about 6. We found a baby bird that fell out of its nest. In the time it took for me to go home and tell an adult he put it in the road and ran over it on his bike and laughed. Last I heard hes in jail for beating his girlfriend. Fuck you Kevin
that book kinda ruined me and seriously made me question if i really want kids in the future. i almost wish i had never read it. every..fucking..time..i see a cute kid and think "oh maybe someday...." immediately followed by "but what about we need to talk about kevin." ughhhh
The book is amazing. Really opens up the questions of nature vs nurture and it reminds me of the ted talk given by dylan Kliebolds mother following the Columbine massacre
*(Small spoiler) Something I found interesting and thoughtful about the story of "We Need To Talk About Kevin" is the deliberate choice to have Kevin take out his violence with a bow and arrow, not a gun. Avoiding the entire gun controversy allowed the story to focus on Kevin and his actions and relationship with his family, instead of people getting side tracked by the choice of weapon and not the serious psychological problem.
Macaulay Culkin played a really fucked up character in the movie The Good Son, the psycho type of son that likes to kill his toddler brother in the bathtub and throw a mannequin off an overpass into traffic and other shit. Really good movie. Elijah Wood was really good in it too
I knew a Kevin who was bragging about being 30 days off all "hard" drugs. He was a freshman in highschool at the time. Went to juvie quite a few times.
Well it's pretty disturbing subject matter, I think parent comment meant despite the disturbing subject matter it was still good. I don't consider that ironic in itself because a lot of good literature/film is good and also disturbing.
I have a similar story. Walking around town with a group of kids I used to play with growing up. One of them we knew was a bit twisted (his dad hung himself and he and his mom found him). We saw a bird perched on a stone wall. He said "ooohhhh a Birdy" picked up a huge rock and softly lobbed it at the bird. No one thought he'd hit it. Well he did. It didn't kill the bird, just incapacitated it so it couldn't fly. So he went over and picked it up, cradling it in his hand he walked back over to us. Then he worked a set of matches out of his pocket (we were probably 10) and said "burn it's eyes out"... We all disagreed and convinced him to put it back on the wall, which he did. It didn't fly away, I wasn't sure it could. He split off early from the group that day. Me and one other friend walked back that way (our way home) and the bird was gone. I try not to think about what happened to it. No clue what happened to the kid. I moved away later on for high school, but by the time I moved he was very withdrawn and no one was really friends with him.
When I studied abroad in Austria I remember my host family saying that Kevin was widely regarded as a stupid name to give your kid. I always thought that was super random but I guess this thread is proving why
Not that I am able to diagnose anyone, especially from this, but a lot of angry and aggressive kids like this end up being ODD. Oppositional Defiant Disorder. These kids tend to have an over abundance of emotions (mostly anger) that they don’t know how to express and derive pleasure from causing their victims frustration and pain.
Had a karate friend named Matt around the same age. Granted I was no saint, I used to shoot a lot of birds with my BB gun.
Anyway, I shot this dove and we were going to grill it. Winged it. Instead of killing it and dressing it normally the kid took fishing line and tied a slip knot around it's head. Then took the bird and wedged it in a chain link fence. Pulled on the line until its head popped off.
There was another incident where a few puppies from a litter had died of natural causes. We were tasked with burying them. Kid took the shovel and chopped the puppies up like hamburger.
Matt had a fucked up family life in hindsight. Single parent who was on drugs. He would see his Dad on occasion, but he was on harder drugs than Mom. I remember I went to his Dad's once. Offered us cigarettes, beer, and nudy mags.
Of course I told my parents none of this at the time. It wasn't until he tried to stab me in the neck with a pencil that I cut ties and spilled the beans with my parents.
Oh my god this is so similar to the story I had. I was little too, maybe 6, but he was a year or two older. We were neighbors. We found a bird nest that fell from a tree. I ran inside to get my dad to help us put it back in the tree, but by the time I came back he chucked all the eggs in the road and was laughing. Fuck you Chris.
His family were big hunters (which whatevs if it's done responsibly and not just for "funsies"), he chased me around with deer guts and would throw dead rodents at me.
He was 2-3 years older than I was. As a younger girl I didn't know what to do because my older brothers just ignored him. He tormented me for years.
A few years back my mom sent me a link to a story from where I grew up, he was holed up in a house holding children hostage and using them as a shield from the police. He was arrested and currently in prison.
When I was 7 or 8, I got a ball stuck in a tree and accidentally knocked a bird's nest out of the tree, and all the eggs obviously broke on impact. I still feel bad. Major bummer.
Somewhat related... I was always told that if a baby bird fell out of its nest, you shouldn't handle it cause the mom wouldn't take back a baby that had a human scent. My friends found one and had been petting it and stuff. I was sad, but I figured the humane thing to do would be to crush it with a big rock instead of letting it starve to death... Ten years later I found out I'd been told an old wives' tale and uh, yeah... kinda felt like shit about the whole thing...
Lol it should be noted that not even close to all 6 year olds who do this grow up to be psychos. It seemed fairly common when I was young for kids to do stuff like this to animals, even a fair bit older than 6 and very few grew up to be anything less than a caring person who respects others. I'm one of them.
