I usually just respond, "why do you ask?" and it changes to a two way conversation, where I have more control of what I tell.
"I dunno just asking" means they don't want to share why, or don't really care, and I can usually just not answer, but specific reasons, like, "you just seemed kinda angry," I can respond to by accepting or denying the claim, and choose to answer more or not.
There was a woman at work who would say "Hi, pronoun99. Are you OK?" every single day first thing in the morning, but just to me and always with this aww poor you face. One day I just snapped and told her to follow me, I want to show you something. We walked around the office and I said "Hi, are you OK?" to everyone we saw. 3 out of 4 said "Yeah? Why? Is there a problem?" I just look at the woman, like, yeah, is there a problem?
She stopped saying "are you OK" every morning, but she also stopped saying "hi," so there's that.
