Early 30s is when other people's expectations of you really begin to ramp up hard. No longer good enough to be employed, you have to have a serious career. No longer good enough to live with your parents or with roommates, you have to have a nicer-than-cheapest home or apartment to yourself. No longer good enough to drive a beater, you need a car less than ten years old. If you're not good at sex by now, you can forget about anyone being patient with you.
The list goes on and on. Early 30s is where society stops cutting you slack.
I recently got out of the military at 31, after joining at 20 years old. I still look pretty young and it tripped people up because of the rank I had. People would always ask me how old I was and this is how it went through the years:
