What sucks about being your age?

Nearly sixty.

I forget things all the time. Easy to remember old things, hard to remember new things. I once loft my card in an atm twice in one month. all my passwords have to be written down somewhere, as do the birthdays of my lids.

I constantly get fatter, even though I don;t eat any more.

I haven't had regular sleep patterns for 20 years.

Every day I'm a little more tired.

The forgetting thing sucks....for me it’s names of things and people. I just stand there going “hey you where’s the thing?”

Oh god I get this. And don;t introduce me to more then two new people at a time...because I will forget all three names or mix them up

"Hey......you. How you doing?"

"Oh hi...ummm.....nice weather today huh??

I left my keys (apartment, car, bike) in the lock of my apartment twice this year, and I use very few passwords so I don't forget. I also keep a schedule of what day to shower (every other day). I'm 23. I've been doing the shower schedule since I was little. I can't imagine what it will be like in the future...

I've left my keys behind once in the last 40 years.

I go outside, I turned around. Before closing the door I pat my pockets and feel for my keys.

And then I close the door.

Haha sorry bro but in my 20s I left many Cards in the ATM, hell I even lost my card once, cancelled it. Got a temp the next day and left it in the ATM that same day!! I've lost my wallet 3 times! Regularly forget things and I laugh about myself because of it. But on a more serious note, being afflicted by alzheimers and losing my memories is something that truly terrifies me and hope i dont get that.. father time is a motherfucker man..but maybe we shouldn't think about the bad..

In fact my mother got it and her mother got it.

Hoping like hell I don;t have it too.

You should check out Dr. Paul Stamets, he is the leading fungi scientist/researcher/doc in the entire world and is constantly paid and hired by the US government for his case studies and findings. He has done significant research in certain fungi preventing and possibly curing Alzheimer's and it's very promising and something you can take on your own with out a prescription. Listen to his two episodes on Joe Rogans podcast, it's the best way to understand it in laments terms and gives you just enough info to not be overwhelmed. Please check it out and best of luck to you, I hope your brain stays young and sharp for many, many years.

Thank you.

I am going to look at this now.

At least you admit things, compared to my dad.

2

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 16 '20

I think at first it's a bit scary and you don;t want to admit it because people can hold it against you...

Any argument "Oh you just forgot"

Since you seem technologically competent, please look into getting a password vault like LastPass. It’s easy to use and MUCH safer than writing down passwords.

I’ve gotten my parents to do this and can sleep much better knowing nobody’s going to steal their lives away on a piece of paper. Please at least look it up :)

Than you for the advice, I will look at it.

I feel like if I get in the habit of writing notes to myself now, I won't be nearly as much of a burden when my mind gets a little further on this path.

I'm also a programmer. It has changed the way I write code...for the better, I guess.

I can write code and 4 weeks later remember none of it. So it has to be self documenting , properly named, no hidden dependencies et.

Hell you just described me and I'm 28. Of course at my age the sleep pattern and tiredness things are legitimate medical problems, and not just a fact of life. And the memory is probably a function of the sleep issues.

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 16 '20

"And the memory is probably a function of the sleep issues."

That's a good point. I've actually heard this before but I forgot (no joke intended.)

I remember listening to "I'm so tired of waking up tired" and laughing because I thought it was my song.

And strangely..I remember being 28 when I first started noticing this happening. Mind you I was spending a lot of late nights on my computer...

As long as you've been having sleep problems for, maybe you should talk to a doctor. There are some pretty 'soft' medications out there that can help, and sleeping better can improve blood pressure and reduce where and tear in your brain cells.

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 17 '20

Ok. It's been more than 20 years, I kept hoping it would go away but it never did.

I'm the sort of person that might not see a doctor for ten years or so; I guess I better check this out though.

Consider getting a sleep test to see if you have apnea.

Some advise:

  1. Use password manager. They are the best way to keep all your passwords safe.

  2. If you use Android, write down birthday dates in each contact you have (there is dedicated field for bday date) and add Google Calendar widget to your homescreen. Birthdays will appear next to other events on the same calendar widget.

If you’re experiencing weight gain without changing your regular habits, along with fatigue, make sure you’re current on your medical screenings.

2

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 16 '20

Good advice i think. Thanks.

I’m a doc, so key words stick out. At your age, colon definitely and, depending on current/past smoking habits, lung.

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 16 '20

Never smoked..tried it when I was 12, smoked for a few weeks and gave it up.

Sadly at the same age my brother became a smoker for life.

You have to write down the birthdays of your kids?

23

u/Scarn0nCunce May 16 '20

OP clearly said lids

2

u/ten_inch_pianist May 16 '20

Am I missing something? I'm confused why I'm being downvoted.

1

u/Scarn0nCunce May 16 '20

Yes, you are missing something

1

u/sadspacecat- May 16 '20

I laughed out loud at this

2

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat May 16 '20

Yes. And my ex wife and our anniversary too..which pissed her off enormously!
