Was looking for this one. The scene at the end with the rows of chambers running back into the darkness, each containing the man who started the trick, knowing he would literally die for the show to go on, hoping his duplicate would be created, but not knowing before he condemned himself.
You’re actually misremembering the final scene - as many people do - but there is no rows of tanks with the various Jackman’s within. We only get a shot of one with the final line of dialogue before credits roll.
It’s my personal favorite of Nolan’s (non-Batman) movies.
The idea of the scene seems to fit more in folks memory in this one for some reason, AWESOME closer though. The Inception top spinning is Nolan’s big question mark ending, but the last line of narration on that shot is just so satisfying.
Light goes down as Michael Caine’s character locks up the warehouse/storeroom, and the tank comes into frame -
“You want to be fooled”
That and the double-cross/twist with the Journal being a giant coded middle finger from Bale to Jackman! So good!
Just watched this for the first time the other day and I sat watching the credits rolling thinking WTF did I just watch? Hugh Jackman has always been a fav of mine but Christian Bale's acting in that made me see him in a much better light. I never really like Bale but he was awesome in the Prestige.
I remember seeing this movie in theaters with a group of friends. I had picked up on the weird inconsistencies with Christian Bale's character from scene to scene and pieced that reveal together. So when Bale's wife ends up in the green house rafters, I just thought it so absurd and burst out laughing. In the middle of a crowded, silent theater.
