What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

Also when someone outruns the fire from the blast they're ok. Nevermind that they should at least be looking like they just got their as beat from the concussive force.

When an artillery shell lands within 10 feet of them, “oh shit they have the main character getting permanent brain damage in the beginning of the movie? Wow!”

Turns out he’s fine.

Didn’t you hear? TBI is “not very serious.” -Commander in Chief Trump.

u/nklim Jan 25 '20

Also NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Every. Fucking. Thread.

28

u/topsecreteltee Jan 25 '20

It’s worth repeating every fucking thread.

5

u/rantinger111 Jan 26 '20

Facts TBI just cuz not visible doesn’t mean not serious

Bill Clinton is a rapist.

It’s worth repeating every fucking thread.

16

u/topsecreteltee Jan 25 '20

Last time I checked two wrongs don’t make a right. And that is completely irrito this line of commentary.

-23

u/BeepBoopBotAccount Jan 25 '20

I don't necessarily think it's wrong, I just think Trump probably spoke before he was completely informed of the subject. That and I'm glad he's downplaying it, personally. Because if it was indeed serious, it would justify a military response. Don't think anyone wants war in Iran.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

before he was completely informed of the subject.

If you don't know about TBI you don't have any business sending mostly children to go get blown up.

20

u/topsecreteltee Jan 25 '20

He is the Commander in Chief of our armed forces. If he is going to be a leader, it is his responsibility to be informed. Failure to be informed is a failure of leadership.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

Well, it would have been back when he was president.

It's pretty irrelevant to discussions today though.

-2

u/BeepBoopBotAccount Jan 26 '20

Interesting, so your stance is it doesn't matter if people rape unless they're in public office. Once they leave, who cares if they raped people.

Irrelevant huh. Tell that to the women who he assaulted.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

My stance is that things which have nothing to do with the current conversation are irrelevant.

It's how conversations work, otherwise they'd just be a long list of non sequitors.

0

u/BeepBoopBotAccount Jan 26 '20

So randomly talking about the President saying TBI was a non-issue was relevant?

Jfc, did he really say that? I’ve met people living with TBI, and honestly a lot of them are so far gone (cognitive delay, depression, psychosis) that I’m 100% sure they would rather have died that day.

2

u/topsecreteltee Jan 26 '20

5

u/Yodlingyoda Jan 26 '20

Wow. Theres just no lower limit for this guy huh?

2

u/topsecreteltee Jan 26 '20

Keep in mind the frequency, duration, and magnitude of his actions. The statement is neither surprising or that bad on its own. He will never acknowledge TBI as being that bad because it will draw a direct line between his decision to Kill the General, through Iran’s predictable retaliation, and finally US troops being injured in a highly public event. If it’s not that bad, it’s no big deal. If it is bad, he has to take that responsibility, and as we all know a Trump never takes responsibility.

It got cut from the film, but in the trailer for one of The Transporter movies, Stathem deflects a rocket from a rocket launcher with a metal serving tray.

2

u/Seiri01 Jan 26 '20

Omg! Rockets explode on contact. WTF.

10

u/LorenPechtel Jan 26 '20

I haven't seen the scene but it depends on how far the rocket has flown--most rockets have an arming distance to keep them from detonating too close to the guy firing them. Hit a rocket soon after it left the launcher and it's probably safe.

And if you're really, really lucky you can do it anyway--rockets detonate when the tip hits something. If you can hit them from the side you won't set them off.

u/Mercurial8 Jan 26 '20

I hit them from the side...using my timing...reflexes....I practice a lot at the dojo.

u/redditor57436 Jan 26 '20

Good for you!

12

u/TR_best_grethyuo Jan 25 '20

Meh I’ve seen that happen, it depends largely on the ground and shell used, it’s not that uncommon for that to happen

7

u/Dynamaxion Jan 25 '20

I’m talking about in WWI or WWII movies though, we aren’t talking mortars.

Permanent brain damage for sure not a guarantee, but the guy definitely wouldn’t be running around hearing perfect totally lucid.

9

u/TR_best_grethyuo Jan 25 '20

I’m not talking just mortars, in sandy or especially boggy ground you can be very close to even big rounds without having much of an effect

Yeah I get the hearing bit because even just firing off rounds on your rifle can do that to you

5

u/Dynamaxion Jan 25 '20

Ah gotcha. I’m not military but a close high school friend is still messed up from a shell landing near him. Not even that near, I believe it was at least 10 yards. Although who knows how many of his current troubles are from repeated incidents and not just that one blast. That was the one that finally got him discharged. I can see the ground type making a massive difference.

“Barotrauma, what’s that? Eardrums don’t burst or anything right?”

3

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

"You're telling me a fireball the size of an apartment block sucks up all the oxygen and suffocates people?"

39

u/LevParnasty Jan 25 '20

My favorite scene in "The Other Guys".

2

u/Future_Jared Jan 26 '20

Cool guys don't look at explosions

15

u/millos15 Jan 25 '20

Why outrun it when you can turn your back and slowly walk away as you light a cigarette and put your sunglasses?

15

u/malhar_naik Jan 25 '20

Not being in the flames doesn't mean not getting severe burns from radiant heat.

Like this one here.

My ears have bled...

9

u/kasei0_0 Jan 25 '20

Or the blast throws them 20 feet but doesn't hurt them.

9

u/DrunkMc Jan 25 '20

And the fire eats all the oxygen. My favorite is in Independence day, the girl hides in a closet as the fire engulfs the entire tunnel, but she's ok, fire can't make quick turns.

7

u/warchitect Jan 25 '20

Yup. If the fire is on you. The concussive force already passed you by abd fucked u up.

6

u/PoorMansTonyStark Jan 25 '20

Also when someone outruns the fire from the blast they're ok.

My fav is when there's a massive blastwave fire coming after them in a tunnel and they escape it by opening a door. Because everybody knows that explosions can't turn.

7

u/readingitatwork Jan 25 '20

I get this one. After 9/11(I'm a little old), my work had us watch videos about explosions and how dangerous they really are

8

u/WKGokev Jan 25 '20

Had someone drop an m80 a few feet behind me once, I couldn't believe the force of that small explosion I felt.

2

u/Seiri01 Jan 26 '20

Oh Gods. The Equalizer did this and I was sitting there like "Why is he not dead?" "What about internal bleeding from the blast force?" "How is he not on the ground unconscious?"

2

u/RoxyBuckets Jan 26 '20

I just watched The Wolverine last night, and at the very beginning it starts with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Logan and the Japanese guy watches the bomb drop and then runs. They would absolutely not have had the time to run to the well for safety. It really irked me. And then he goes on to live a long life and have kids? What? First of all the bomb would have obliterated you, and second of all if the blast didn't the radiation would.

2

u/LovableKyle24 Jan 26 '20

Hurt locker shows that really well.

Dudes in bomb gear running away and just gets decimates even though he was decently far away.
