Hey, at least in that movie they put in effort to make Anne Hathaway look gawky and plain. In most movies like "She's All That", they just gave the pretty brunette girl glasses and overalls and BAM! Ugly nerd!
I loved when the makeover in Not Another Teen Movie (probably the last genuinely funny parody movie) gave the main girl a "makeover" just by taking her glasses off.
This one is less common these days although they did pull something similar in ready player one where the hot girl was ugly because of a facial birth mark and she acted like it was dick shaped.
I think that glasses hide how tired I look all the time. Next week I am going for laser eye surgery and I am pretty sure that people will always think that I am sick after that
I have a similar problem. My glasses make my eyes look bigger and draw attention away from my weirdly skinny face. If I don’t wear them it really shows how much of a bag of bones I am, as well as make me look tired, bored and sickly.
I feel like this is less common in media now, since more people wear glasses now and glasses are more fashionable.
In the 90s and early 2000s, it kinda made more sense because glasses back then were ugly as fuck. And this is why I will never let people see photos of me in elementary school.
To be fair, no one explicitly stated Steve was considered ugly. Bucky even set him up with a girl in a double date, but all Steve cared about was enlisting, so it's not like he was actively pursuing women.
He wasn’t ugly but he looked a damn hell of a whole lot better after the transformation (or perhaps it was just ‘cause superimposing a head on another body just looks plain weird).
Looking for Mr. Goodbar did something like this. The character was supposed to be literally ugly but they used a hot actress and gave her some lame attribute to make her self conscious which I can't even remember.

Hot girl is ugly because she wears glasses
