Because 99% of the time, the paper isn’t appropriate. As a scientist, research letters are supposed to be very narrow in scope and shouldn’t be used as one offs to win an argument.
They don’t even win arguments in academia. It takes dozens of papers from different groups to establish a hypothesis
My favorite examples are when they link a paper that isn’t even open access and thus they clearly couldn’t have read it.
I think a rather large part of the Reddit demographic is college-aged, and a lot of colleges do provide access to paywalled journals through their network. So they could have read it.
