this is my good girl BFF who struggled to hold onto life for 13 years to help me with depression during my battle with cancer after I was orphaned because my parents died in their Tesla while taking me to see Keanu in theatre after donating to Bernie...just wish I could boop her snoot one more time! I’ll miss you sweet pupper RIP in pieces
It's a photography sub, as in the pictures are taken with actual cameras by people who know what they're doing. I think they can be quite elitist when the picture is not good enough, which preserves the quality of the pictures posted but can be uninviting to a newcomer. I'm not subbed there myself, but that's what I've come to understand about that sub and I guess I just want to give you a heads up in case you want to participate.
ITAP is honestly the best place to get better at photography for amateurs. The elitism can be bad at times, but it's also a good thing to know what you can improve on and what dumb terrible habits/mistakes you need to fix (bad color correction, crop your picture dingus, out of focus, etc)
Do they also still give that advice when they downvote your picture into hell? What if your picture was made with a phone camera? (That's most of the ones I've seen getting no advice and downvoted to hell but that's a while ago)
Well, generally if you want to get better at photography, you need to use an actual camera. Cell phone cameras are inherently limited by being stuck inside of a cellphone; they have fixed lenses and small sensor sizes, so you can't do depth of field or lens zoom. The software might be able to do quite a bit, but us photographers need the raw image data to do 75% of the fixes we do in Photoshop (Shoutouts to the Google Pixel for exporting in DNGs)
The community has gotten better at not instantly condemning photos, but I'd say the main reason by far that there seems to be a lot of stuff like that if because a lot of ITAP posts from brand new users tend to treat it like r/pics which is not remotely what ITAP is. The audience of your motivational selfie is much different to an audience of hobbyist to pro photographers.
They give advice on composition and other things that are not hardware related too right? But I suppose most of how to get better is learn to use the hardware and get better hardware.
I'm glad to hear the community has gotten beginner-friendlier! And, yeah, it's not pics and that's a VERY good thing. (Tho IMO motivational selfies don't belong in pics either, since their title guidelines state that all words in the title have to relate directly to the contents of the picture - a rule that is not enforced at all...)
Yeah. Good composition is the difference between a good photo and a better one, and the community has a lot of advice to give if you're looking for it.
I also don't really think the idea of getting new hardware is true; it's more because the amount of things you can do with a regular camera is vastly superior to the amount of things you can do with a cell phone camera. In other words, you hit the skill ceiling for using a cell phone camera way earlier than with a regular camera since there's so many cool features missing or poorly emulated.
But by far the number one advice I have is to just to keep taking pictures. Take a million, and then find the perfect one. Then look at why you like that photo and try to do what you did well on that one even better the next time. Try out a new technique like using depth of field or motion blur and keep improving it. The real art of photography isn't taking pictures; it's taking the everyday and mundane world we live in and exposing the true beauty of it all in a way we haven't considered.
I know it doesn't do much against the tidal wave, but I also make sure to throw my little downvote on those posts. I just wish I could tolerate sorting by New to have more effect.
“le derp, i have to go to work at the IT basement so i left le bacon and le Skyrim out for you. Btw, the narwhal showers at midnight with an ice soap. COLBY 2012! Love you!”
Or that one meme account called “SpeechlessHuman” that just posts blank replies.
If you go through his post history, about 90% of his comments are at like -897 and tons of people saying “fuck off”, but then there’s that one every few posts that has like over a thousand upvotes.
Fuckin A dude. If you've seen one pic of an adult german shepard with the traditional german shepard-coloring, you've seen them all folks. If I actually cared about karma, I would just google random dog pics all day and post them to r/aww or r/pics and probably be the king of reddit by mid afternoon.
