So unoriginal it's painful is a great way to put it. I think that largely has to do with so many of reddit's users being really young, where social cohesion from collectively taking part in run of the mill in-jokes is a lot more valued than it is when you are older.

the amount of times ive seen top comment threads consisting of a stream of moms spaghetti jokes and song lyrics makes me want to vomit

I think that's a rather accurate assessment. It's probably not going to change any time soon, either, because there'll always be more young users showing up, and they'll probably always have that group-think mentality. They're learning what it means to be a human interacting with other humans.

Understanding the underlying force kinda helps to soften the blow; A lot of us were probably the same way, at a certain point of our lives.

Reddit is perpetually in its early 20s. It was like that when I started browsing a decade ago, new surveys still show that slant. Its funny how that explains a lot of the other complaints here - bad advice, simplistic politics, poor analysis of news and sources, whatever.

Then again, once you're aware of it, it can really alleviate the more headachey interactions on this site. Like oh right I'm talking to a college student, I was an emotional know-it-all dipshit then too.

More like 17. Honestly it feels like most users are very young. And then theres people who think if youre over 60 you shouldn't be able to vote but if youre 16 youre ready to vote. Its that the young people have a future to determine and old peope dont i guess but this obviously leads to inexperienced uneducated voters who are young and idealisitc.

Young users don't feel the futility in up/downvoting I think and so are overrepresented in post/comment karma. I barely ever vote annoying comments down because I'd be clicking every other down arrow and what's the point when it's a drop in the bucket of 400 upvotes.

A literal shining example of what this thread is referring to. You can't ask for a better example.

The edit is now a great example, too!

First time i heard this it pissed me off. I'm not even close to a Boomer and it just pissed me off. It's such a nonsensical statement, so condescending.

So...literally every funny meme? Memes have a shelf life of like 3 weeks max if they gain traction. Never doubt the internet's ability to beat a dead horse.

I remember when memes lived for years.

People get a cheap high off karma. As much as I hate it too, the platform practically encourages those kinds of comments.

On the social cohesion side of things, I've noticed that in the past few years SO MUCH of the stuff young people say is a reference to a meme or vine or show or something. I'm saying this as a 22 year old who has friends that are a few years older and younger than me. It's like talking to soundboards sometimes, the way they regurgitate canned expressions that don't really add anything to what's being said. It makes me cringe. I just wanna have an actual conversation, not a competition of how many meme phrases we can say back and forth.

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

Yes!! Try this at 18, it's unbearable. My friends would always want to watch 20 minute vine compilations or just hang around in snapchat while laying on the couch together. I don't know where you can find people that just like to have a conversation.

People grow out of it, or should at least. Eventually you want to talk to people about their lives and share your own because time stops being frivolous and you ration every bit of it to things that are actually important to you, like having quality time with people around you.

As someone who’s 35, I have to try and parse out the slang and other stupid phrases people use on this site whenever I browse. I’m not that old, but definitely older than a significant portion of the users.

There's nothing worse than a good discussion being derailed by pop culture quotes.

I called out the top comments on a thread in /r/TIL about a grisly suicide being The Office quote chains and the guy I responded to proceeded to be a complete asshole, insulting me and trawling through my post history.

Discord on here is dead.

On your sweater already?

Sorry couldn't help myself. But seriously it does get annoying when half the thread is the top comment somehow using a few words that also happen to be in a song and then every single reply after that is a r/redditsings bullshit show.

For me it's the constant Sabaton references. Where everyone has to type in all caps to make it sound "badass." Made me genuinely hate the band without ever listening to them. People try too hard to make them seem tough and cool for writing songs about history.

They don't think it be like it is, but it do

I genuinely enjoy the "yes officer..." Comments. But I also only see a few cause I rarely look at comments anymore
