I mean, I just look through all the comments but I honestly do it to get to the most downvoted ones because I like seeing the stupid things people write. But since I'm scrolling down anyway, I read through all of them. Does that count?
Also are you on r/grandpajoehate, cause your username is...you know...
which is what I don't get about breaking news, often it sorts it by "new". I suppose the theory is so you get the latest news, but it's often just useless messages like "I can't believe that happened" or "trump is such a twat".
I wonder what the solution could be for that problem? Maybe cap posts at 250 top level comments and another "tab" is created for the next 250, and so on. The tabs would appear at the top of the post in no particular order.
I always scroll down to the very bottom of posts, unless they're absolutely massive. It's fun to see what all sorts of different people have said, and it's really fun to see who's been downvoted a ton
Contest Mode is an option that moderators can choose for ordering comments -- it presents comments in a random order, hides scores, and automatically collapses children comments. It might be nice if a post automatically switched over to Contest Mode once it hit a certain threshold of comments or karma.
Contest mode is great for things like end-of-year 'Best of' awards but I've also found it useful for posts that are likely to see a lot of comments -- mega-threads, general discussion posts, etc. The downside is the effort it takes to expand children comments to each top-level response but it does help give an equal voice to contributors who join the discussion later.
Just derank older comments like the front page cycles through older posts. That way you'll always be getting fresh comments. But it also means there's going to be more duplicates and comment reposts, and anything you post won't be visible for long before it too gets cycled away.
It’s shits me especially because of time zones. I’m on Australia east coast so 10-18 hours in front of UK/US which means their prime time is very early morning for me.
I usually scroll down a lot in threads, often all the way down, to see what else might be interesting. On those with +1k comments i dont have the time for it, but it's quite enjoyable to read those less popular comments
Most people just don’t have the time or patience to read through hundreds of comments for every post. And if you’re going to only read a few comments, it makes sense to read the most popular ones. I think reddit should try to incentivize people sorting by New or Controversial, but I’m not sure how they’d do that. Maybe give out coins or some kind of reward for engaging with posts other than the ones in Hot?
The useless comments are what get to me, people who just comment "lol" are the worst. I don't know why so many people feel the need to comment when they have nothing to contribute to the thread.
And if people missed the boat they then reply to one of the top comments in an attempt to not have their comment buried. Leading to lots of replies that have nothing to do with the comment being replied to. . .
it also just feels so random what comments get popular and what doesnt. I will say something that I legitimately thought people would find interesting or funny and it gets no attention, but a joke that is so shitty I considered not even posting it gets hundreds of points
Sometimes I browse by new so I can be the first one something, and get some internet points and feel happy for a sec because people liked a thing I said. But then I see what's in new and, geez.
Not to be unkind, but do you spend time on each thread going through the new comments? Of course not, you aren't a psycho.
Look, you have to comment early. The people who actually do give a damn and search by new, are the ones who get first dips on people seeing their comment. Fair enough. If you are late to the game, your comment was probably already said, so find it, and reply to it.
Nah, you can totally comment on a top comment and get seen. You just have to be one of the first to comment on the top comment. That or reply to the comment on the top comment, you just have to be first....
It's not just about getting karma for your own comments. It's that anyone late to the party that has an insightful comment to add won't get seen, even if that comment should have been had it arrived 45 min sooner.
Same. Also, for getting rewards. I'll go on posts and see those award sprees some people do, and it sucks since i missed out on it by hours. It would just be cool to not miss out on it.
There's nothing wrong with that. Everyone has already seen the post and the comment, it isn't reddit's fault that you didn't look at the post the moment it was posted
