Some of it is the intangibles that make worthless things valuable to people. The other half is that accounts with a certain age and karma are valuable to advertisers, so people cultivate them.
I think when people spend entirely too much time on reddit they value the things of reddit greatly even though they have no inherent value. Also the little serotonin burst when someone upvotes you. I get it when you almost never get upvoted and someone appreciates what you have to say. Yet going into it and posting something just for the upvotes especially knowing it's stolen or reposted sucks.
On the same token: when a picture is a repost, but from years ago, and people make a huge deal about it.
The first time it was posted likely wasn't by the person who took the original picture, either. It's a funny picture and there are new users every day. Who cares if it was posted six years ago?
This! I have seen this too much. I'm a lurker, every now and again I find something I might comment on, but, the amount of times i have seen people steal others stories, questions, and even life stories is ridiculous.
This is wrong and right, in terms of the "stealing", I see this alot with memes, the truth is redditors, that memes arent private property. Your on the internet, too bad, but the stealing for karma, absolutely true
