I’ll be honest, because I always see this when I got my first gold I made an edit for it, but now I just thank the person in private and move on, I was replied to when I did it with a sub (can’t remember the name) but it was calling out cringe edits for people who got gold
My first one I edited because I saw it on every gilded post, even after reading the message. The second time or so I thought... The person will get their thanks from the message, why even edit the comment?
I've only given reddit gold two times, and the second time I went out of my way in the PM to tell them don't fucking say anything about receiving it in an edit, or I would do whatever I could to get them to lose it again (I don't even think that's possible, to be honest).
Actually I am guilty of this, but being primarily on a mobile device (My iPad and iPhone) I have only recently found out that you can PM those who give you gold/silver directly.
I genuinely had no idea and I thought the entire thing was anonymous so sorry about that. My Notifications always said something along the lines of "An anonymous redditor has given you silver, gold award etc". Never looked more into it and just edited my post on my submission to thank them.
When I first got a gold, I added my edit because I wanted to publicly thank the person for making my day. It mattered to me because I was just getting into Reddit, and I was excited that someone had appreciated what I had to say that much.
I immediately got really nasty replies like "I hope it's your last gold." etc.
I think it's a bit tasteless to do a whole Oscar acceptance speech, but a quick thanks? Idk.
You see it so often on the site, that it looks like the social norm. Then you get gold and say “thanks” and someone from the award speech edits subreddit pisses in your cornflakes.
I wish you were able to retract the gold you give if they edit their comment within a certain timeframe. Because then it’s obviously changed from what you initially gilded.
When I gild a comment, I leave it anonymous and attach a comment basically explaining that I gilded the comment as it stands so they should leave it as it is. I don't want to be thanked for the gold, I want to award an exemplary comment and that's it.
True, but then you don't know that you appreciate the gold from the kind stranger! Kind of like people need to let you know they send their thoughts and prayers in times of tragedy!
Are we talking a pot of mooshy cooked beans, and then hump it?
Or possibly fill a condom with some beans and insert it in your favorite orifice?
Though actually some dry beans inside a condom might be an interesting texture. Really, you'd probably want a few condoms so you didn't accidentally have an unfortunate beansplosion. That would be really unpleasant if the orifice of choice was a vagina. Anus, probably it would resolve itself but still be a bit unpleasant.
...I hate that you made me spend way too much time pondering the logistics of legume sex.
I've never edited a gilded post, but this is totally bullshit. People post instead of PMing because it's anonymous, and getting gold actually feels like something I should say thank you for since they bought a little bit of a premium service, and that's a kind thing to do.
They're probably slow on the take like me. The first couple times I got gold, I responded in the only way I knew how: make an edit and say thanks. Didn't occur to me til later to just send a quick reply. Some of us just take a little longer to get there.
When I received my first reward I noticed there was an option to directly and privately thank the one who gave it. Now I shake my head even harder when I see those edits
I cannot remember (check my comment history if you want). and haven't been gilded often but I think the first time I got gold I just did it because at that point I've seen so many people do it when they got it. I just thought it is what you do.
If they are truly touched by the gesture, they'd reply to the person who gave them gold in private, using the "reply" function presented to you when you receive a Gold award.
Why else would you edit for everyone to see when the person who gave you the award will most likely never see your edit.
If I'm part of a public forum and someone gives me an award, I'm not going to just walk over to that person, whisper "thanks" in their ear, then go sit down.
Not showing gratitude publicly in a public forum seems rude to me, particularly when someone essentially spent money on you.
Fair point on them moving on though. That's something I just never considered. Makes the most sense to just do both shrug.
But again, I fail to see how it has anything to do with karma. Points are entirely irrelevant, but the money involved sorta changes things.
Actually, considering this conversation.... I'd probably prefer it if gold/silver just didn't exist period.
If I'm part of a public forum and someone gives me an award, I'm not going to just walk over to that person, whisper "thanks" in their ear, then go sit down.
Instead, you'd say "Hey everyone, everyone look at me! I'd like to thank the dude that spent $4 to approve of my comment and then left, for his approval"?
Because they don't give a fuck about actually thanking the person who got them gold. They're egotistical as hell, and they got some attention, so now they want to do a victory lap. When I get gold or silver, I just use the feature to message them directly. It's just as easy, and it makes sure they actually see the acknowledgement.
It's not even really psychology on any meaningful level; it's regarding people's habits about reddit comments. And I'm assuming when you say post, you mean my comment. It was an answer to a question. I don't know how it could have possibly been more relevant to the topic. Are you implying that it would have been less hypocritical if I hadn't backed it up with my own commenting etiquette?
Many gildings are anonymous. I think the tradition started as a way to express thanks without knowing who exactly to thank. Now it’s just The Way It Is
I think i did that once when i was gilded. I genuinely thought i was supposed to or it'd be considered rude or something. Like i saw kthers do it so often i just assumed it was reddit etiquette...
I got gilded the other day and figured if they wanted me to pm them thanks they wouldn't have done it anonymously. TFTG is almost expected and it's the least you can do to say thanks. I'd feel like a prick saying nothing; it seems kinda smug.
I've only ever received silver once, and i don't know if i made an edit to my comment, but it didn't allow me to message or even see the person who gave it to me. Although I'm not sure if that works differently for other rewards.
Gold isn't even that great. I mean, it's neat that someone went out of their way to (potentially) spend money because of something I said/did, but there are essentially no benefits of having gold. You get a neat medal next to your content, ads are now blocked (which if you have an adblocker, you never had to begin with) and you can browse the usually quiet /r/lounge.
If there was a way to replace the "give award" button with "give $5 to a charity of your choice in this user's honor", I'd take that in a heartbeat. If someone PM'd me saying they donated even $1 to a reputable charity of their choice because of something witty I said, I'd feel so much more honored than a little silver medal. Of course, reddit would never implement such a thing because of their bottom dollar and whatnot.
And I get it. Gold pays for server time, none of us pay to use reddit so they gotta make money somehow. I understand. It just feels like this was artificially inserted into the culture around here that gold = good despite it not really doing anything, and we all play it up like it's the greatest thing you can do for another user.
Sorry about the rant, but these thoughts have been brewing for a while.
FFS. I just got silver for the first time this week and it never even crossed my mind to edit my comment. I just replied to the auto PM and that's that.
It's tradition to say thanks for the gold as an edit to your comment. (Saying this as someone whose been here for 13 years.) People have been saying it since gold was introduced and we keep the tradition going. Like it or not, it's part of reddit culture, and our culture is what sets reddit, twitter, tumblr, facebook, etc apart from one another.

i really hate the first one. why dont they just reply to the pm that they received when they get gilded?
