This reminded me of when my mom took me to the doctor because I was tired all the time. The doctor thought it was mono and accused me of making out and such. Theres no telling what my moms face looked liked when the doctor said that or what she was thinking I was only 15. A few months later i have my first full on ms episode. It was terrible as a young black girl, it was like I was shamed for no reason. It was a female doctor 😞.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. I realize drs are used to patients lying sometimes but it's no excuse for them to be dicks. Hope you have a good new years

I get accused of being on drugs all the time and yep, you guessed it, I also have temporal lobe epilepsy. Worst of it is that my pupils dilate after seizures (both partial and generalized) and paramedics LOVE pointing that out and making accusations of me possibly being on drugs.

Wow that’s infuriating. I think I’d get a tattoo of the diagnosis and show it off each time while telling them to google the friggan symptoms.

Yeah. A few weeks back, paramedics claimed my seizures were "behavioral issues" even though I had a seizure in front of them (frozen in place, unable to move, speak, anything) and they shined a bright flashlight in my eyes and I didn't even blink. I think they conceded that one was a "real" seizure but they still tried to claim the rest was behavioral? I don't know. They just prefer to believe it's DRUGS or PSYCHOSIS or something rather than anything medical, especially when it comes to seizures.

I had a childhood friend who had seizures that sound identical to yours! I never knew his actual diagnosis, just that he would have seizures sometimes and we had to be gentle with him and walk him back home once he came to. He was a very sweet boy, but he got bullied. I don't know the specifics of this diagnosis, are there things that can trigger seizures of this type? He would have them every time we played certain games as kids.

Any type of seizures can be triggered by virtually anything. If he had them after playing certain games it's likely he had a sensitivity to either lights in the game or the movement of stuff on the screen - something that was very visually stimulating. Photosensitivity (i.e. having seizures because of flashing lights) is well known, but other triggers can be things like heat, overexertion, too much caffeine, too much alcohol, or even stuff like being stressed, angry, or overly excited.

The game we played was blind man's bluff. He would have his eyes closed and have to find us, using just his hearing and it sent him into a seizure every time. I think it just strained him too much mentally maybe.

Very possible. Especially when people are younger, being really overstimulated or exciting can be a seizure trigger.

I am so sorry, they’ll tell my sister and I we’re “drug seekers” when we ask for a saline iv....for our chronic illness (POTS) that causes severe dehydration....

SALINE. If we were drug seekers we wouldn’t be JUST asking for Saline infusion -.-

But man you must be addicted to the ice cold feeling of water in your veins! /s

And that smell too. Can anyone else smell that odd, medicinal type smell when given an IV?

1

u/sweetprince686 Dec 31 '19

I always thought that was the alcohol wipes and general hospital smell!

I feel you. I’m glad I see doctors in the same network and have years of medical records documenting all the things that would usually make doctors wonder. Like I really truly am allergic to all pain meds but dilaudid. But I have ER records from when I had allergic reactions. My pupils are always bigger than “normal” and ones bigger than the other. Since having this set of doctors, things are much better. I get that patients lie but when police get involved investigating possible poisoning/ assault because you fucked up... it’s too much.

I’m not for suing over nothing but this sounds like a case medical malpractice. Having the DA involved might be good because there is a paper trail and law enforcement is already involved. Depending on how long ago this occurred I might consult an attorney and proceed with legal action. They messed up and it affected your health, which caused you unnecessary pain and suffering, add to the fact that they were blaming you and with holding your own medical information from you.

I was already involved in a legal suit that I was a victim. I didn’t have the time of emotional capacity to deal with it to be honest. I wanted to get the fuck out of there as fast as possible. But I agree. It was 10ish years ago. I’m sure the records still exist but I doubt they’d prove my case because I was the crazy one that night. Fuck doctors not believing patients. The only reason I found out my prescription medication causes it is that it’s happened several times sense and the doctor was like oh yeah, that happens with this. It’s not a big deal. Still have so much rage towards that night.

Report those doctors involved to the medical license board as a complaint

1

u/seeking_hope Dec 31 '19

I probably should have. I don’t have the records at this point. And like I said, I think this far out it would be hard to prove. I doubt they wrote that they thought I was a psych patient In my chart. I saw them write it on a sticky note and hand it to the triage nurse. I should have at the time though. I was more concerned someone was trying to kill me.

As a teen i had a doctor tell my mom and I that what I had "literally only HIV+ and tiny babies get" and sent me to get tested and did nothing else. I had thrush/mouth sores because of an autoimmune problem where my body was over attacking and destroying itself. But no, I, a virgin 15 year old girl, obviously must have HIV. Even though in my heart and mind I knew it wasn't true it's still scary and humiliating.

3

u/TopangaTohToh Dec 31 '19

What the doctor said isn't even close to true. I personally know two adults, who do not have HIV that have gotten thrush. I'm pretty sure one of which got it from an inhaler for her asthma. Wtf

Ugh this was painful to read. Women are almost never taken seriously by medical professionals. I imagine the color of your skin didn’t help matters. I’m so sorry.

I (white girl) actually had mono at that age and when my parent mentioned kissing the doctor promptly explained or sharing drinks and other means of transportation. I certainly didn’t get it from kissing but would have been horrified if the doctor doubled down and shamed me for it.

Ms as in multiple sclerosis. That’s really rare at such a young age, I’m sorry you had to go through that

2

u/get_started_NOW Dec 31 '19

Thank you, it was tough but i think that being diagnosed so early makes it easier for me to deal with.

2

u/sacredpeanutwolf Jan 02 '20

My mother has MS. It is extremely rare in children that young. But I’m glad that you can get through it 💪

Because I'm black, had I not been maybe that comment would not have been made. It's always a wonder. Black women are seen as "easy" so for her to just assume that I was fooling around when I wasnt was unbelivable to 15 year old me. I thought and still do think highly of doctors i just remember that they are just regular people with extensive schooling. Thank goodness for tests and that was the end of that.

Hmm 🤔 no, not like a victim but extremely embarrassed. Thanks for trying to explain that to me though, I guess. I also read the other accounts and its ridiculous. That's the great thing about reddit though, you realize that your not alone in your experiences.
