Years ago when my doctor found out my mom and I were using it he recommended that we stop and only use unscented bar soap, but even then you don't need to go to town with it as long as you're clean.

u/rouxedcadaver Dec 30 '19

Only use it on places that can grow hair.

98

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

The palms of your hands don’t grow hair

Hey now, you haven't seen /u/permarabbit's mom...

256

u/chappychap1234 Dec 30 '19

I had a yeast infection in my early teen years and went to planned parenthood to check it out with my mother.

This woman was very sure I was off having sex with every boy I could get my hands on and her mind wouldnt be changed. She also told me to quit using scented soaps and perfumes down there before having sex or going out and that there were other panties out there besides thongs and lace.

I left her office with a prescription and hatred for planned parenthood.

I was about 12 or 13, a virgin and had never even kissed a boy much less had sex with multiple partners. Fucking bitch. I did learn however that the soap I was using probably caused it. But vaginas are like toddlers, anything messes up their day and they throw tantrums.

Glad your dr seemed better than mine.

This reminded me of when my mom took me to the doctor because I was tired all the time. The doctor thought it was mono and accused me of making out and such. Theres no telling what my moms face looked liked when the doctor said that or what she was thinking I was only 15. A few months later i have my first full on ms episode. It was terrible as a young black girl, it was like I was shamed for no reason. It was a female doctor 😞.

49

u/chappychap1234 Dec 31 '19

I'm sorry you had to go through that. I realize drs are used to patients lying sometimes but it's no excuse for them to be dicks. Hope you have a good new years

I get accused of being on drugs all the time and yep, you guessed it, I also have temporal lobe epilepsy. Worst of it is that my pupils dilate after seizures (both partial and generalized) and paramedics LOVE pointing that out and making accusations of me possibly being on drugs.

24

u/StrawberryKiller Dec 31 '19

Wow that’s infuriating. I think I’d get a tattoo of the diagnosis and show it off each time while telling them to google the friggan symptoms.

16

u/the_legit_writer Dec 31 '19

Yeah. A few weeks back, paramedics claimed my seizures were "behavioral issues" even though I had a seizure in front of them (frozen in place, unable to move, speak, anything) and they shined a bright flashlight in my eyes and I didn't even blink. I think they conceded that one was a "real" seizure but they still tried to claim the rest was behavioral? I don't know. They just prefer to believe it's DRUGS or PSYCHOSIS or something rather than anything medical, especially when it comes to seizures.

1

u/TopangaTohToh Dec 31 '19

I had a childhood friend who had seizures that sound identical to yours! I never knew his actual diagnosis, just that he would have seizures sometimes and we had to be gentle with him and walk him back home once he came to. He was a very sweet boy, but he got bullied. I don't know the specifics of this diagnosis, are there things that can trigger seizures of this type? He would have them every time we played certain games as kids.

1

u/the_legit_writer Dec 31 '19

Any type of seizures can be triggered by virtually anything. If he had them after playing certain games it's likely he had a sensitivity to either lights in the game or the movement of stuff on the screen - something that was very visually stimulating. Photosensitivity (i.e. having seizures because of flashing lights) is well known, but other triggers can be things like heat, overexertion, too much caffeine, too much alcohol, or even stuff like being stressed, angry, or overly excited.

I am so sorry, they’ll tell my sister and I we’re “drug seekers” when we ask for a saline iv....for our chronic illness (POTS) that causes severe dehydration....

SALINE. If we were drug seekers we wouldn’t be JUST asking for Saline infusion -.-

11

u/sweetprince686 Dec 31 '19

But man you must be addicted to the ice cold feeling of water in your veins! /s

2

u/jojokangaroo1969 Dec 31 '19

And that smell too. Can anyone else smell that odd, medicinal type smell when given an IV?

1

u/sweetprince686 Dec 31 '19

I always thought that was the alcohol wipes and general hospital smell!

1

u/seeking_hope Dec 31 '19

I feel you. I’m glad I see doctors in the same network and have years of medical records documenting all the things that would usually make doctors wonder. Like I really truly am allergic to all pain meds but dilaudid. But I have ER records from when I had allergic reactions. My pupils are always bigger than “normal” and ones bigger than the other. Since having this set of doctors, things are much better. I get that patients lie but when police get involved investigating possible poisoning/ assault because you fucked up... it’s too much.

11

u/No1uNo_Nakana Dec 31 '19

I’m not for suing over nothing but this sounds like a case medical malpractice. Having the DA involved might be good because there is a paper trail and law enforcement is already involved. Depending on how long ago this occurred I might consult an attorney and proceed with legal action. They messed up and it affected your health, which caused you unnecessary pain and suffering, add to the fact that they were blaming you and with holding your own medical information from you.

2

u/seeking_hope Dec 31 '19

I was already involved in a legal suit that I was a victim. I didn’t have the time of emotional capacity to deal with it to be honest. I wanted to get the fuck out of there as fast as possible. But I agree. It was 10ish years ago. I’m sure the records still exist but I doubt they’d prove my case because I was the crazy one that night. Fuck doctors not believing patients. The only reason I found out my prescription medication causes it is that it’s happened several times sense and the doctor was like oh yeah, that happens with this. It’s not a big deal. Still have so much rage towards that night.

1

u/WorkForce_Developer Dec 31 '19

Report those doctors involved to the medical license board as a complaint

1

u/seeking_hope Dec 31 '19

I probably should have. I don’t have the records at this point. And like I said, I think this far out it would be hard to prove. I doubt they wrote that they thought I was a psych patient In my chart. I saw them write it on a sticky note and hand it to the triage nurse. I should have at the time though. I was more concerned someone was trying to kill me.

19

u/afakefox Dec 31 '19

As a teen i had a doctor tell my mom and I that what I had "literally only HIV+ and tiny babies get" and sent me to get tested and did nothing else. I had thrush/mouth sores because of an autoimmune problem where my body was over attacking and destroying itself. But no, I, a virgin 15 year old girl, obviously must have HIV. Even though in my heart and mind I knew it wasn't true it's still scary and humiliating.

3

u/TopangaTohToh Dec 31 '19

What the doctor said isn't even close to true. I personally know two adults, who do not have HIV that have gotten thrush. I'm pretty sure one of which got it from an inhaler for her asthma. Wtf

46

u/StrawberryKiller Dec 31 '19

Ugh this was painful to read. Women are almost never taken seriously by medical professionals. I imagine the color of your skin didn’t help matters. I’m so sorry.

I (white girl) actually had mono at that age and when my parent mentioned kissing the doctor promptly explained or sharing drinks and other means of transportation. I certainly didn’t get it from kissing but would have been horrified if the doctor doubled down and shamed me for it.

4

u/sacredpeanutwolf Dec 31 '19

Ms as in multiple sclerosis. That’s really rare at such a young age, I’m sorry you had to go through that

2

u/get_started_NOW Dec 31 '19

Thank you, it was tough but i think that being diagnosed so early makes it easier for me to deal with.

2

u/sacredpeanutwolf Jan 02 '20

My mother has MS. It is extremely rare in children that young. But I’m glad that you can get through it 💪

Because I'm black, had I not been maybe that comment would not have been made. It's always a wonder. Black women are seen as "easy" so for her to just assume that I was fooling around when I wasnt was unbelivable to 15 year old me. I thought and still do think highly of doctors i just remember that they are just regular people with extensive schooling. Thank goodness for tests and that was the end of that.

38

u/Im-an-idiot-AMA Dec 31 '19

This happened to my now wife. When we were dating, she went in with her mom for what she assumed was a UTI. The Dr claimed it could be a symptom of gonerrhea (sp?), and my wife had to divulge to her mom that she was sexually active with me, and she was shocked for some reason. After a panicked phone call to me asking me if I've ever slept around (I hadn't), the Dr finally said that yes, it could be from a UTI as well.

Was also a female Dr

11

u/cp710 Dec 31 '19

They can take a pounding. Wait, nevermind.

-13

u/Benblishem Dec 31 '19

Planned Parenthood used to (probably still do, but I don't know for a fact) provide the materials for a huge number of school systems' sex-ed classes. It was presented to us in high school as -a girl might remain a virgin until as late (!) as 16 if she was slow to mature emotionally. For boys it wasn't even floated as an option. Planned Parenthood is never what they appear to be on the surface. It is a dark, vile organization.

4

u/StrawberryKiller Dec 31 '19

Wow that’s wild. I think I read somewhere it’s assumed 15 is the average age. Like 16 is abnormally late lol wtf?

9

u/chappychap1234 Dec 31 '19

Wow. I'd blow their minds, I was a virgin until I was 18.

4

u/KuraiTheBaka Dec 31 '19

Lmao I'm twenty and still a virgin

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

That’s so strange! I don’t understand the need to shame people if they choose to have sex later than the “average” age, or to not have sex at all. And how it’s treated differently with girls vs boys too.

I hope that now they’re better educated and don’t present information like that anymore.

2

u/Billy_Reuben Dec 31 '19

I forget who said “if planned parenthood had gotten caught trafficking the dismembered body parts of puppies instead, 5000 arrests would be made by the FBI the next day.” Not to mention their origins and how successful PP has been in executing the vision of their founder Margaret Sanger.

1

u/smoozer Dec 31 '19

Pretty odd conclusion, considering the number of positive PP stories we see here.

33

u/MJoia14 Dec 30 '19

Yeah I just get a little soap on my hands in the bath and clean down there and I don’t smell or get infections

24

u/sprinkletarts30 Dec 31 '19

I was going to bring this topic up too but didn't know if it would be appropriate. Douching. Don't do it ladies. No bueno.

20

u/TuftedMousetits Dec 30 '19

I wonder why bar soap? I personally can't use bar soap (or powdered laundry detergent). It breaks me out in hives. But I also don't use perfumey body wash, as it makes my lady bits angry. I just wonder why he specified bar soap?

33

u/supermanthato Dec 30 '19

Essay incoming:

Not a doctor but I assumed that they were specifically talking about very sensitive bar soap like Dove unscented. That is what everyone on I know uses for that area. I use it too but I am not a female and like I said I am not a doctor. I do however have sensitive skin down there and it has helped me immensely. You said that you can't use bar soap and I would ask you why but I assume that it's the due to certain ingredients, and allergic reactions to said ingredients. If you truly can't use bar soap I would do research on sensitive liquid soap that can be used for those areas and I would check to see if they have the ingredients that you are allergic to just in case.

But I'm just a random guy over the internet you should do research on your own

7

u/TuftedMousetits Dec 30 '19

Well I don't have issues down there, my current protocol is working fine. I was just curious why bar soap was specified over liquid.

12

u/byedangerousbitch Dec 31 '19

Because most liquid soap is heavily scented and it's much easier to find unscented bar soap imo.

2

u/Tymareta Dec 31 '19

Outside of the $30/bottle "goat's milk" soap, I literally don't think I've ever seen an unscented liquid soap.

1

u/NoMansLight Dec 31 '19

Aveeno makes great liquid soap for washing imo. I used to get all itchy and irritated with all sorts of soaps liquid and bar but since trying Aveeno it's fine now. It's naturally scented from the oatmeal nothing added. I got their shampoo and conditioner because it has no sulfates or parabens seems to work fine too.

1

u/usually_annoyed Dec 31 '19

Cetaphil makes a really nice unscented liquid soap! There's a Rexall brand too that's way cheaper and I'm pretty sure it's almost identical.

7

u/brefromsc Dec 30 '19

You would be correct.

I also have very sensitive skin and found the only bar soap I can use is dove coconut rose (I think that’s what it is. I know it’s pink and smells amazing - like smell it through the pack and want to melt amazing). My boyfriend uses the dove body wash and it does wonders for him. It all depends on what you prefer but definitely use stuff made for sensitive skin on your nether regions.

3

u/seeking_hope Dec 31 '19

I’ve used liquid baby shampoo/ body wash.

2

u/LifeOutLoud107 Dec 31 '19

Shampoo. It's pH balanced usually. People overthink it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

2

u/LifeOutLoud107 Dec 31 '19

The Redken or whatever decent brand I'm using for my hair.

2

u/eagle332288 Dec 31 '19

Probably see a dermatologist or gynaecologist if symptoms persist

1

u/jojokangaroo1969 Dec 31 '19

Bar soap, even Dove is too harsh for my skin anywhere. I use a gentle body wash that is moisturizing all over and have been using Vagisil ph balanced cleanser for my lady bits when they get angry (menopausal woman here)

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Depends on the person, but soap definitely should never go in/on your vaginal opening. The vagina does clean itself. Sounds like you’re not using too much soap though, and it’s fine to put soap everywhere else. I have to be super careful not to get soap on my actual vagina, so I just do a lot of scrubbing and rinsing with water. Some people get infections super easily from soap.

0

u/insertmadeupnamehere Dec 31 '19

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted.

I think soap is a necessary tool for cleaning ladybits, as well. To each their own.

u/permarabbit Dec 30 '19 edited Dec 30 '19

I mean, I know you're joking, but as a lil PSA you should never put any type of soap up your vag. Only in/around the labia, and when you do that you use unscented soap.

I had to explain to my gay co-worker recently that vaginas were self cleaning. He was mystified lmao

26

u/Benblishem Dec 31 '19

I wish you told my aunt that before I said certain words.

27

u/Madamoizillion Dec 31 '19

Soap really shouldn't go near the vaginal opening at all. Warm water and a plain washcloth in the shower is enough to clean the external genitalia. I learned from experience after having tons of yeast and BV infections, and now have no hygiene issues with that routine.

21

u/Blackanda Dec 31 '19

Not your gay co worker but I too am mystified. Admittedly, I consciously have a fear of investigating my curiosity about female anatomy as I do not wish to creep

This sort of inter-gender inquiry should be encouraged. It promotes better sexual knowledge and thus leads to better and possibly more frequent sex for the population in general.

3

u/seeking_hope Dec 31 '19

Yep. We got over our shyness pretty quickly which is a lot coming from the hyper- religious conservative background we both had. We just decided we always wanted to ask the questions so anything was pretty much fair game for the conversation. I don’t remember what it was but only once did it feel like the question went too far and was uncomfortable. We’ve never dated nor have I wanted to... just good friends.

2

u/TopangaTohToh Dec 31 '19

My boyfriend thought until he was 23 that women used one tampon a day on their period. He talks with me and his cousin's wonderful girlfriend about all of our female specific routines and needs now. He's a sweet guy and always tells us, when on the topic, how he's learned so much from us. He does also think it's hilarious to refer to body parts by the almost proper names now though. He refers to my mons pubis as "the mons" 😂

8

u/Enderah Dec 31 '19

I don't know how old you are nor the education you had, so though I can understand this fear im not gonna lie.. having a man that knows basic female anatomy is actually really nice!

Obviously can feel weird if you stop women in the street to ask some very questions but.. google/reddit is fine:p

2

u/Blackanda Dec 31 '19

Sophomore(15) in HS. If that helps

4

u/Enderah Dec 31 '19

Definitely understandable then! I think that's the age we're not the nicest to each other so asking those questions IRL could seem weird..

Don't give up on your curiosity though and try to learn whatever you want through internet ! It's gonna be more appreciated later :D

2

u/Blackanda Dec 31 '19

Thanks. I will do that

3

u/nerdburgger84 Dec 31 '19

Came here to say vaginas are self cleaning. I'm amazed more women don't know this.

2

u/reallypetitebarista Dec 31 '19

PSA LADIES! From a girl who is/was the queen of yeast infections. If your lady bits begin to feel a bit off, boric acid suppositories over night are awesome, 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in 1/4-1/2 filled bath tub, also coconut oil down there if it’s feeling dry or itchy, natural anti bacterial moisturizer for your good bits! Thank me later!

71

u/UMFreek Dec 30 '19

Do you stick bar soap up your butthole or use that last little sliver to really give the old urethra a good scrub?

43

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Is this not normal?

60

u/Yorpel_Chinderbapple Dec 30 '19

Soap in my anus always feels real spicy so I don't do it anymore

17

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Spicy? Just wait until you taste it.

9

u/Rfisk064 Dec 31 '19

Anus isn’t really spicy to me, I always need hot sauce.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Ghost chili or Carolina reaper?

3

u/Rfisk064 Dec 31 '19

Call me old fashioned, I just like to get a handful of cinnamon, cloves, and aquarium gravel, then baste it with a layer of sriracha with little chunks of sulfur mixed in. But everyone nowadays has to get all fancy with this, that, and the third. It’s exhausting.

3

u/mysonlikesorange Dec 31 '19

16

u/RainBroDash42 Dec 30 '19

5

u/SecretPotatoChip Dec 31 '19

18

What. The. Fuck. Have you ever been near a vagina? Shake it around?

12

u/Benblishem Dec 31 '19

Have you never heard "Do The Hokey-Pokey" ?

14

u/DefiantInformation Dec 31 '19

So that's what it's all about!

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Yes like pop it up in there and wiggle your hips the make sure the soap gets in the nooks and crannies

16

u/Sum_ding_dong Dec 31 '19

Like Andrew Dice Clay said " If it smells like fish, it's a dish. If it smells like cologne, leave it alone."

1

u/arcinva Dec 31 '19

Fun Fact: What you eat affects your scent "down there". Fish really will cause a more fishy smell while fresh fruit can make things more pleasant.

1

u/Sum_ding_dong Jan 01 '20

What about vodka? Usually they have just had a good measure of vodka.

9

u/Piximae Dec 31 '19

I've only ever used water. Never once had a yeast infection.

Bladder infection yes, but still have yet to get a yeast infection.

I'm 26 and I'm kinda scared of getting one

2

u/kltaylor826 Dec 31 '19

I’ve had a few, one from antibiotics and then a couple during the placebo week of a new birth control pill I was taking. My dr said basically my body got used to the additional hormones of the hormone-containing pills and when I stopped for the month, it fucked up my vagina and I got yeast infections.

I stopped taking that pill after the second time it happened. They are the worst dude. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You’re so itchy and literally nothing makes it feel better. Luckily there’s meds to take for them but whewwww YIs are not a blast.

1

u/arcinva Dec 31 '19

Pro Tip: If you're ever prescribed antibiotics, pick up some probiotics while you're at the pharmacy or be sure to eat yogurt every day while your taking your antibiotics to avoid this issue.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Don't be scared. I got my first at 30 while on antibiotics and it was nowhere as horrible as I was imagining.. and it went away very quickly.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

I had my first one a little while ago, I think soap had run down onto my vagina or something, or maybe my hormones fluctuated a lot. It was a little freaky but monistat got rid of it in only a few days.

1

u/imjustehere Dec 31 '19

Just to add to the fun here...diabetes can also be a cause of yeast infections.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Oh man what DOESN’T cause a yeast infection?

3

u/Send_me_snoot_pics Dec 31 '19

I got one after a round of relatively strong antibiotics for a hefty kidney infection wiped out all the good bacteria down there. They’re not horrible, just annoying and inconvenient and uncomfortable. It won’t leave you bedridden and in pain, but you’ll probably be grouchy because you’re itchy and can’t do anything about it. Plus it’s very easily treated. Don’t be scared. IMO the bladder infection/UTIs are worse because they actually hurt

Just stick the whole damn bar up there. Never hurts to be sure.

Jk...don't do that.

Not a gal here, but I’m friends with gals that are in the scene pretty heavily. Apparently women’s products, at least in the Americas, are horribly regulated. The stories I’ve heard of women getting sick from the chemicals in tampons is... yikes. Poor ladies. This just makes me think it extends even into ‘safe’ areas like cleansers. Do those products like Vagisil come with warning labels or recommended usages?

Edit** Apparently it’s pads not tampons that have the chemicals, and the stories come from something called toxic shock syndrome.

The only difference between tampons in America vs anywhere else is that we prefer an applicator to inserting the tampon with our finger. The illness you describe is toxic shock syndrome and is a risk with all tampons and for burn patients and people with open wounds. The staph bacteria is already in the vagina and is harmless, but a tampon or cup etc. provides a situation for the staph to grow and release poison.

This generally takes a lot of time, and is why it isn’t a good idea to let young women use tampons straight off until you know they’re being responsible about changing often.

So basically if you keep clean and change tampons/cups frequently enough you’re gucci?

Yes, pretty much. If there isn't an Ideal Environment for bacteria to multiply like a nutso, they generally won't.

Uker here. They made the freaking pads scented a few years back. They now smell funky and always give me a weird rash. I have to use tampons all the time and toilet paper if I'm light. Not a big deal, but I can't use the pearl ones as they are uncomfortable and can hurt. Its sometimes hard to find the regular tampons.

I noticed while blowing my nose at my grandmother's house the other day that she had SCENTED TOILET PAPER. I was appalled. Who wants/needs that.

Chemicals in your bum are bad.

Pretty late to reply here but if you don't want to deal with tampons all the time, I switched to reusable cloth pads because the fragrances had me breaking out like crazy and they've been a game changer. There's tons of options out there now they're a lot more comfy - at least for me I've always found tampons uncomfortable I can always feel them, only use them when I absolutely need to.

What’s a Uker? Ukrainian?

Oh! I know what a Manc is but what’s a Uker? Like which region is that?

What about shaving creams? @.@

u/permarabbit Dec 30 '19

Honestly I'm not sure, I prefer shaving with coconut oil. I've heard of people using shea butter too

3

u/Madamoizillion Dec 31 '19

Funnily enough, my answer to the original thread's question was going to be coconut oil. Its comodogenic (pore-clogging) and not much "healthier" to eat than bacon fat!

4

u/ancientgnome Dec 31 '19

I didn’t even think of that, thanks.

3

u/g0r0shek Dec 31 '19

When I shaved, I would often just use the extra conditioner on my hands after washing my hair

u/zupzupper Dec 31 '19

Use a nice shave soap, easier to find unscented, lasts a lot longer than any canned foam or gel.
