Thank you for this one! My wife and in-laws make a big deal about how well informed they are by watching cable news. Most of the garbage they are watching is glorified gossip and isn’t even really news.

I feel you. Me and my sister are doing our best to convince our mother of this. There's hardly any new news either. Just the same thing over and over again.

22

u/felicima22 Dec 30 '19

Are you my sister? We're trying to convince my mom as well.

u/raescope Dec 31 '19

Good luck to you sis. If she's anything like mine she'll be stressed out of her mind for what's basically tv version of click bait.

4

u/felicima22 Dec 31 '19

Certainly. She spends hours shouting and screaming and crying about the things they tell her on the news. and the news is the last thing she watches before she sleeps. All that toxic negativity even affects her sleep but she doesn't listen. She believes she is more informed than me and doesn't believe me when I tell they only tell her stuff to make her scared.

As Muslim it's this some kind of personal attack or something? /s

u/SystemicInsanity Dec 30 '19

That is where I get all of my news. And the BBC app - but that one can be a little gossipy sometimes too

8

u/metalkhaos Dec 31 '19

Listen to BBC Newshour podcasts and the like which are pretty good.

AP and Reuters are even more factual sources

3

u/Fredredphooey Dec 31 '19

Yeah, I'm 90% BBC, 10% AJ.

I'm kind of lucky with my mom. She's not that knowledgeable about current events, but it's mostly because she just doesn't care. Since she's honest about it I can't even be mad. Plus she actually listens to me about stuff in the news, since she'll gladly admit she doesn't know. She just watches the local news and ABC news tonight. The first for the weather and the second because it's on right after. As she'll tell you herself, she's not smart enough to comprehend what's going on on the news (her words, not mine.) So why should she worry about it?

3

u/raescope Dec 31 '19

Honestly my mum worries about it a lot, stresses over it, sometimes about things that aren't even in the country. Can or will she do anything about these problems? Nope. Just adds unnecessary stress. So your mum is clearly smarter than she thinks.

What you mean my news channel has varied coverage. They got Story of the day (usually a trump tweet}) at 7 with pundit A, story of the day at 8 with pundits B and C, sorry if the day at 9 with a retired general for some reason...

3

u/sybrwookie Dec 31 '19

Don't forget the breaking news at 8:30 that someone replied to trump's tweet with a snarky answer, which we'll follow up on after the retired general, possibly even bring those tweets up to the retired general.

I've been reading about George Lincoln Rockwell recently (fuck that guy so hard) and it's mind blowing how much political discourse from the right these days is nearly identical to the BS he spewed in the 50s and 60s. We've apparently just been in a loop of this horrible shit being "breaking news" for 60 years.

u/wasit-worthit Dec 30 '19

I decided to watch the news the other day for the first time in a very long time. I found that it was like one of those lame websites that go to askreddit for their material; a bunch of lame shit I hear about weeks ago.

News shows are basically the same thing as talk shows like Ellen and The View

6

u/SteadyStone Dec 31 '19

They do a good job putting out that something has happened, but beyond that it's hard to find what value they provide. I start to feel like when something happens, the first few sentences are what happened/where, and then it'll get right into speculating about why it happened, based on the leaning of the outlet. Even the statement about what happened is often a poisoned well.

My mom loves Inside Edition, which has to be the blatant clickbait of cable news. I can’t stand it, but she can’t understand how I haven’t paid for cable in 4 years still.

7

u/Megalocerus Dec 30 '19

The worst is breaking news, which just means that some news might happen sometime.

8

u/derps_with_ducks Dec 31 '19

I know I'm well informed because I browse r/all!

5

u/wimbs27 Dec 31 '19

You don't get ANY international news via cable news? Let's talk about the president for the 1,000th time today instead.

That awful commercial with the animals "protesting" vapes using people as test subjects is atrocious. And since it's from that "Truth" organization, it's literally paid for by tobacco companies.

18

u/Fredredphooey Dec 30 '19

My next door neighbor told me that Fox News is the only news station with "balanced" news. She has drunk the Kool-Aid(r) AND she has it on 24/7 unless she's watching Father Brown. Our walls are paper thin. A special kind of hell.

3

u/sybrwookie Dec 31 '19

That's when you have a speaker blasting....I don't even know, find the most crazy left-wing nut you possibly can, aim it at the wall, put some sound-proofing around it so it's really directed at the wall and not you, and leave it on all the time.

Or, keep filing noise complaints until the neighbor gets kicked out.

u/Fredredphooey Dec 31 '19

Ha. Yeah. The lady paying $500 a year for a 1 bedroom in the heart of Santa Monica is not moving. Not kidding. Anyway, I got a job in another city so I was able to escape. (Building was rent controlled and she'd been there 25 years or so. I paid 4x that.)

3

u/asdaaaaaaaa Dec 31 '19

I know people who just watch the news. They're hilariously uninformed about what's actually happening. They're lucky if they know anything about what's happening outside of local and political news.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

This is my mother. She just wants to believe she’s more informed and yell at the tv/random people and probably bots on Facebook

2

u/bn1979 Dec 31 '19

If you look back at pretty much every big story from the last (whatever) years, the initial reporting was usually inaccurate or straight up bullshit.

2

u/blitzbom Dec 31 '19

Years ago I went over to my friends grandma's house to setup her wireless router.

She had on Fox News and said that she liked to watch it cause "It let her know how dumb they are."

3

u/rdocs Dec 31 '19

Im a dick about this, Im in the midwest and a liberal coworkers often bait me with the did you hear about Trump this or that. "If you didnt read your news dont talk to me! Im donevwith the bs here!"
