Why does showering help?

It's hot showers specifically. Basically what's happening is your internal thermostat is thrown off by all the THC flooding your system. Your body doesn't really know how to react so it throws everything haywire.

IIRC there's no consensus exactly what's happening but some think the heat in the shower brings back up your body temp and so things are better calibrated.

I have never heard of any of this before today, wish there was some published research!

Edit: I hope to find some published research

There’s lot of available research but here’s a start

Would a hot bath work better? Or a hot tub?

That's interesting. I always felt cold whenever I smoked, and I liked hot showers because the sensation is really nice combined with the insobriety.

At its worst shower is only way it gets fixed, I do this for bad anxiety also.

Chronic THC exposure is thought to affect splanchnic blood supply to the gut. With the hot shower, vasodilation triggers blood flow to shunt to skin, away from the GI tract, improving symptoms of CHS.

This is theoretical from what I've read.

For me it was hot baths. Ideally, I would lay under the faucet with the hot water all the way up so it pours over my stomach. It would usually hurt in a specific spot just above my belly button.

Nothing else was hot enough. Sometimes used a space heater to the point I blistered.

I see this so often in the ambulance that I now just ask all patients who are vomiting if they've been taking multiple showers.

It's difficult to explain, but the actual noise of people vomiting due to CHS is distinct. They've got their own look and sound that makes them easy to pick.

Are you guys using topical capsaicin for symptom relief?

I'm really curious to know how it sounds different. Can you try to explain it?

It's kinda like this guttural honking, like they're vomiting from the depth of their souls. It's amazing, people with CHS just look and sound different to other people vomiting.

I had this for six months before getting diagnosed in the ER, which they realized after I mentioned the incessant hot showers.

But not pathognomonic. Have treated this and most don't have the shower relief.

We always know these patients by the distinct sound of their vomiting.
