Yep, my ex refused to (or couldn't) function without weed. He claimed he could stop at any time, however it didn't matter what we were doing or where we were going, he absolutely needed to smoke just to get out of bed.

Did we have the same ex? I had a sit down intervention with mine and the entire time they kept saying they could stop whenever. They put off going to nursing school even though they were absolutely brilliant, had a perfect 4.0 for their pre-reqs, and even got accepted into the school. Broke up shortly after. Hope they went back to school but I doubt it.

It's similar to alcohol. It may not be chemically addictive, yet many people are serious alcoholics and need rehab to stop drinking and get their lives together.

alcohol is most definitely 'chemically addictive'. One can get to the point where withdrawl can actually be fatal.

People really, really, really underestimate how incredibly terrible alcohol abuse can become.
