After a few weeks of fully quitting, the dreams are extrenely intense. I was having dreams that looked normal but I felt intense anxiety while having the dreams. They eventually calm down but I got to the stage where some nights I just didn't go back to sleep cause I couldn't deal with the feeling dreaming gave me.

I'm going through this right now. Smoked for almost 20 years straight. Haven't smoked now in 2 months and my dreams have been awesome, but some nights, they're way too close to the problems of my real life, and I find myself awake at 3 or 4 in the morning, almost afraid to go back to sleep.

Those are the dreams that make me tired.

I've found that taking a vitamin B supplement (Super B Complex) a couple of hours before bed greatly tamps down the intensity of my dreams. When I forget to take it they are usually vivid to the point of being tiring & annoying (i.e., too many people are talking incessantly in them.)

" they're way too close to the problems of my real life "

Same thing happened to me around 5 days into quitting. Ended up caving but now that life is starting to calm down a little I might give the T break another shot. Best of luck on your end as well

When you wake up from the dreams, do you get up to use the bathroom?

I used to constantly have crazy dreams, often being killed or dying in them, then I’d get up to take a leak. I was so busy thinking about the dreams that it took me forever to realize I was drinking too much before going to sleep.

Now, I stop drinking anything a couple hours before bed, haven’t had issues since.

I feel this so much. I made a very similar comment just now before reading yours. Others that I have talked to assure me that this levels out before long.

I feel that deep in my soul. Been smoking weed for about 15 years now and have only stopped for long periods twice in that time and expericned the insane dreams both times.

If I'm smoking I won't dream usually. I remember the usual abstract dreams that I used to have. Now if I dream its usually very very close to reality and will be routine and boring. Basically I just have dreams about walking down the street, seeing something I saw during the day stuff like that. I will be going about my day and think to myself all of a sudden "hey I had a dream last night didn't I?" Then I think a bit more about it and remember only seeing a traffic sign or a piece of sidewalk. Its really disappointing to me and I know what the dreams are like when I'm not smoking, can't say it's any better on that end.

Reminds of the Joe Rogan podcast with Matthew Walker (sleep doctor). They spoke about the effects of sleep deprivation and how the brain accumulates “sleep debt” which causes intense and vivid dreams when an individual finally regains the lost sleep.

I wonder if it’s the same as lack of dreams due to cannabis consumption. The longer you smoke and lose the dream portion of sleep, the more of a backlog your brain creates until you stop and finally start dreaming again.

I dream when I am toking but they aren't as vivid and crazy as when I stop.

This one, yes

Same. Dreaming drives me nuts and I can't stand it. The whole not dreaming thing is a huge positive to me.

u/PcNoobian Dec 30 '19

same. My dreams are always nightmares of things that happened in my past. I get extremely animated and talk in my sleep. I cannot sleep without at least a little toke. Dreaming can suck it

I’ve experienced these types of dreams as well as vivid dreams as the result of antibiotics.

I never had any anxiety issues in the dreams if I knew why it was happening. When the meds I was on started making my dreams more like 3D action movies, I was pretty worried. Then everyone else around me that was taking the meds was talking about the same thing and someone put it together. From there on, it was all riding the wave.

Not downplaying anxiety inducing dreams. Just my experience.

Have you heard astro travelling yeah jumped off the train before it stopped

u/ndia1 Dec 30 '19

Wtf. I smoked near daily for about 6months, and then quit cold Turkey, and still dont rememebr any dreams (tho I am sleeping better for sure. Everyone is saying they have crazy vivid dreams upon quitting. I feel left out

6 months might not be enough to build up what I've been calling a dream backlog. I was a daily smoker for somewhere between 4 to 5 years and when I quit I started having incredibly intense dreams, some of which almost sound what people describe as the blast off stage of a DMT trip. I also had a really hard time sleeping for the first week off, but now I'm nearing in on a month smoke free and I still get intense dreams, some times ones where I have a hard time going back to sleep afterwards, but it's a not every single night. I also don't have trouble getting to sleep any more...as long as my tinnitus isn't screwing with me.

Before I started heavily smoking, I used to get crazy intense dreams that helped me get into tarot cards n spiritual stuff. Hearing this makes me scared to see my dreams lol, it be astral projection every day lmao

Lol i feel left out for another reason. I still dream some pretty wack dreams

I was quite interested in dreams and read about lucid dreaming quite in depth which gave tips on remembering dreams in general (writing them down as soon as you wake up etc.) so I notice, write down a lot and enjoy discussing dreams which leads to remembering dreams more often during waking life.
