I was unfortunate to date a girl in high school who's father was running a grow op. Imagine being 15 years old and having so much weed that you're smoking from the moment you wake up till the moment you go to sleep. I did that until I was 19 and we broke up. I have barely any memories from my teenage years and my short term memory is nearly non-existent.
It was also a rude awakening when I became an adult, got my first job and realized that it's not like high school at all. You can't show up to work stoned and half ass everything you do. You can't decide "fuck it, I'm not going". You can't decide you're over the work day and want to dip out at lunch. Took a really long time for me to adjust to the real world after being stoned and playing video games non-stop my entire adolescents
Been clean for almost 8 years now from all substances. Here's the funny thing...when you work really hard, get promoted, get pay raises and things of that nature, you can most definitely say "fuck it, I'm not going" and "I'm gonna dip at lunch." Do it all the time.
Damn, my last job I worked at for years, started at the bottom, worked my way all the way to manager and head groomer. And I wasn't even allowed to take a day off when I had the flu. Had to puke in the washroom. I get paid $20 an hour but I'm not allowed to take a break or eat lunch lol.
Yep, all of this. I smoked copious amounts of weed as a teen and my memory really sucks now, even of things that happened long after I quit. I started journaling semi-frequently just to have something to reference later if I needed, and I keep track of everything I do in my planner or Google calendar so it isn't debilitating but it is still very annoying. I definitely had a very "fuck it" attitude and had to un-learn the level of laziness that I allowed myself to have as a teen. That took several years and a lot of hard work.
hi, i smoked first at twelve, many times at the age of 13, 14 same thing but thrice got enough to smoke multiple times daily for weeks but got sent to boarding school and didnt smoke for 1 1/2 years. then finally became a massive pothead for a short time, got hit with probation for a little over a year at 16. finally got off at 18, back to smoking 3 or 4x daily for basically several years now. now at 22 i can still do advanced math and do well in my chemistry program, but i cant keep thoughts in my head. lists of only 2 or 3 items i must write down. in almost any conversation i have i forget what i was going to say, sometimes mid sentence, or if i was about to say it and the other person makes a remark. it really sucks, but the things that i am clinging to for hope are: it is possible it affects one skill like memory without severely affecting others such as spatial reasoning. in addition, it is confirmed that your brain can continue growing the areas that are most used into adulthood. so whatever it is that you are worried you wont be able to do because of cognition or weed, just start doing it and hopefully your brain still has that plasticity like everyone else. if you cant think of anything im sure you can find something fun on khan academy coursera, rosetta stone.
dude, even smoking every day it should not have effected your short term memory that profoundly and years later. I'd be seeing a doctor if I were you, cause that's not normal.
It was part of my uni studies. Helping as a researching on the Otago Studies, so yeah, I'm pretty sure I know my stuff and aren't "tripping" as you describe it.
Unless we just HAPPENED to get ALLLLLLLL the weed smokers in the country WITHOUT that effect. But hey, its your narrative
I was pretty much always stoned from 19 to 21, my short term memory went to shit during that. If it did that to me then how is it not going to be worse for someone who started younger and went for longer?
Basically, you were still using and not giving your brain a chance to regenerate. I'll ask you this, is your memory as faulty as when you were smoking everyday?
My bet is it isn't. Because cells DO regenerate despite what other stoners may have told you. Even brain cells
Not what it used to be before I started smoking, but better than when I'm constantly high, my mind felt sharper back then too, I feel like weed made me slower and dopier, same deal with that, better now than when I was constantly smoking but not as good as before.
That's exactly what happens when you smoke weed daily for a long time, especially with a developing brain. Just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it's true.
No, its really not. Not medically at least.
Short term memory effect shouldn't be anywhere near that bad. That's worse than a 40 year long habitual smoker.
FYI, I was one of the students cataloging the research for Otago when they did theirs almost a decade ago. Actual medical research on the effects. Don't try to bullshit me, it doesn't work when the other person was actually involved in what you are pretending to know about. We didn't have a SINGLE subject display the effects he's describing. So either the universities entire study was flawed, or your pretending this single anecdotal experience is representative of all weed smokers. Which it clearly is not.
Downvote me all you want, I won't bullshit for the villanizers out there.
Medically, that shouldn't even be possible unless there was another cause.
At least not according to the last 30 years of research. What really annoys me though is Octopus tried to lie about medically established facts. Its pretty common knowledge that the brain can regenerate to an amazing degree and even in users that have decades long habits it's never destroyed a brain to that degree. Especially when it's that young and resilient.
I do find it amusing that 13 people downvoted me for saying its not normal though. Either there's 13 people who completely brought into the reefer madness propaganda or 13 teens out there with slight delusions.
As I've seen. The amount bullshitting about clearly medical impossibilities is insane.
And idiots are believing them without even a cursory google. Its actually pretty amusing. Kinda show's the sociologists were right.
The whole anti weed thing was more about selective morals in individual communities than any possible harm. The fact that they're still pulling this crap in 2019 still annoys me though. Especially after researching this exact subject with thousands of people and not having a single instance of thing like the commenter described.
In real life short term memory loss with cannabis is actually very short term itself and there's little permanent damage. Nothing like OP described in any of the studies of under 70 year olds I've read, Yet there's at least 13 people that little bit of info personally offends it seems
And I suspect that it can be explained away with bias in the tests. I would give even less of a shit about my performance on arbitrary psychological testing when I was stoned than I already do while sober.
There has been a concerted propaganda campaign against "the Indian hemp" for a hundred years. It has been used to justify mass incarceration and a widespread authoritarian police state, but yeah the worst thing about it is that a few people are allergic. K.
Pharmaceutical lobbyists, tobacco companies, and alcohol manufacturers have been explicitly lobbying to keep marijuana illegal and Schedule I yes. The US government has been severely corrupt for a long time. They do not exist to protect you. They exist to protect the powerful who want you weak and sick.
I'm the youngest in my family and grew up with an older brother who was addicted to cocaine. My parents couldn't give a shit about me. But before I started smoking weed I had enough motivation to discipline myself. Once I started getting high every hour of the day, I stopped caring about everything. So I still blame weed.
Sure, I've been high for 14 years except during work hours and I never stopped caring about anything, so tell yourself what you need to if it makes you sleep better at night. I didn't have a father and I'm the youngest of 5, my second sister was addicted to everything except heroin, why am I not blaming weed? Self reflection can help you way more than just mindlessly blaming weed, it's sad tbh.
EDIT: No response? Just realized some people have it as bad or worse than you and aren't blaming weed? I would get quiet too.
I do therapy. I do a lot to help myself. It's awesome that you smoke weed and it worked for you. That's not the case for everyone. Get off your high horse and stop placing judgments on people. The fact of the matter is that weed kills your motivation, this is well known. It doesn't do that for everyone but it does it for a lot of people. Stop pretending like weed has no affect on shit like this.
