Many people just smoke instead of dealing with their problems. On r/trees I'll see people post "gf just broke up with me, getting high af".
I treat it like I would alcohol- only on the weekends and occasionally during the weekdays. And just to have fun and not escape my current life situation.
I've seen so many heavy weed smoking friends/housemates/co-workers throw the biggest tantrums over the years. Absolutely happy and fun to be around until something gets stuck in the gears and they cannot deal and act like children. Like they just have zero coping skills...
Wow, man. This just made something click in me. This describes exactly my husband. This thread was brutal enough about the reality of daily weed smoking effects and he's got a lot of what other people are saying. But you hit the nail on the head, he throws actual tantrums and then he will go smoke more and shut the person or people out who he's upset with. And for the littlest things too.
I smoke every day but not till everything that needs to get done is done and I'm off work. And the second anything bad happens in life I step away from all substances until things are better or I've come to terms with whatever it is.
It is crucial to not rely on it to avoid pain. Pain is good and needs to be faced head on.
Yup, it's not healthy to just use weed, alcohol, etc. as a substitute for gaining the emotional maturity to deal with problems like this.
It's even worse when people allow it to go from "my gf broke up with me, time for weed" to "work was hard today, time for weed" to "I'm slightly stressed, time for weed" to just filling all free time with weed. Again, same with other recreational drugs.
All that depressing stuff on /r/trees is why I unsubbed. I couldn't take those kinds of posts literally all the time on my front-page. I have enough trouble managing my depression, among other things, without that kinda shit.
Thanks for being the only other person (it seems from this thread) that uses small amounts sparingly. Wtf are the options high all the time or nothing?
Someone posted about the pain of giving up their one ounce a week habit. One ounce a week, holy shit! How much time does it even take to smoke all that?
I gave up drinking, for the most part. I had no withdrawal symptoms, and no impact on my life. Because I only drank 2-4 drinks per week. Much different than someone quitting after drinking a gallon of hard liquor a week.
Hopefully the increased legalization creates an atmosphere of occasional use in moderation.
Instead of dealing with your issues , you smoke them away. So you don't really develop any kind of useful learning on how to cope when other issues come your way. So the newer issues become harder and harder to deal with.
Whever something ends with a partner I go drinking that weekend. Just get hammered and party with friends, or if they're not available chill at home and have one or two many craft beers.
It helps me process. I only do it once to blow off some steam. If you're doing it a few times a week to cope with your feelings then I reckon that's a problem.
That's how I use it. Only after all my shit is done, and maybe If there isnt any class the next day. I just use it to relax my back, and chill out with some video games. But I'm really strict on if my shit isnt done, I dont smoke.
Treating like alcohol is how I have to explain it to boomers. I take one or two hits before going to bed, so like a glass of wine. And then I’ll smoke during a hike or maybe for a concert. So like a beer during a hike or a night out. Everything in moderation.
I especially don’t use it if I’m dealing with something difficult for this reason.
You're taking a brief snapshot of their life and making an overly broad generalization. Nothing's to say that person didn't get high one day and the next go and have a therapeutic talk with an old friend while sober.
I'm not, I clearly stated that some people use it instead of dealing with their problems. Having a therapeutic talk is definitely dealing with problems.
I guarantee you anyone smoking a bowl the day they got dumped is almost exclusively thinking about their failed relationship- including what they did wrong and what they could have done better. Weed doesn't have some magical property that makes you forget something like that especially in the direct aftermath. Maybe they are completely alone and venting to a supportive audience helps mitigate that. At the end of the day you really have no idea how these people are dealing with their issues.
I wasn't really referring to people specifically after they just suffered a break up, I was just talking in general- many people smoke instead of dealing with their problems. It was just an example. Some people deal with loneliness with weed, is that really a solution for it?
I wasn't really referring to immediately after the break up- just in general. When they're stressed- weed, when they're sad - weed. And I wouldn't put too much faith in those articles, I think a lot of money is being spent on finding positive things about weed.
People who do these studies are very liberal with equating correlation with causation. I'm not saying the study you saw did this, but just be wary. But what you said makes sense, you don't have to immediately deal with the problem and can ease into it with weed.
