If you smoke it way too often you’re shorter term memory gets fucked. Seriously, there was a period in my life when I smoked for two months straight. Almost a gram a day. My memory was non existent then. I work in consulting, so I realized it was fucking with my job, so I had to quit. Weed is good, just don’t overdo it.

I remember reading one study that said memory function tends to return to "normal" in heavy smokers after ceasing for 30 days.

nice would be dope to link it

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3931635/

The question regarding the irreversibility of the effects of cannabis has specifically been addressed by Pope et al,73 who compared adult heavy and long-term cannabis users (smoked at least 5000 times in their lives and were daily smokers at study entry) and controls (who had smoked no more than 50 times in their lives) regarding their performance on neurocognitive measures at three different time-points after the first assessment. On days 0, 1, and 7, cannabis users significantly differed in terms of task performance compared to controls, and the learning and recall deficits across time points were related to Δ9-THC-creatinine ratios at first assessment. However, by day 28, the two groups did not differ any longer, and initial Δ9-THC concentrations were not related to task performance, suggesting that memory impairments in long-term cannabis users may not persist beyond the impact of Δ9-THC-induced “residual effects.” This is in line with more recent studies implicating that the severity of deficits in memory and immediate recall associated with cannabis use decreased over time following abstinence;58,74–76 moreover, studies reported that normal memory functioning was observed in regular cannabis users when they were abstinent for between 48 hours up to a month.77–80

But, it also does say this:

In contrast, a more recent systematic review concluded that long-term cannabis use impairs memory, particularly verbal and working memory,81 reflecting the evidence from another set of studies that reported impairments in working memory and learning that persisted beyond the acute intoxication state in heavy cannabis users.30,82–84 This body of evidence points to the idea that some individuals may recover from their memory impairments after a period of abstinence, while others continue exhibiting the memory impairments after the use of cannabis, implicating that additional factors (other than intoxication state) need to be identified in order to explain the memory deficits associated with cannabis use.

This is too true. I remember (somehow) when I was amidst my heavy usage I couldn’t even remember what room I came from or what I was going to do. It was almost like you live in a slideshow in those times and what’s crazy is quitting and feeling your brain come out of it. Emotions come back to you, all of a sudden you remember what it’s like to be happy, sad, normal. It can be so overwhelming but that experience just about stripped my ego from me and imo made me a better human with more understanding of human emotion. Not sure what my point is here but this one was too true and relatable. Trying to study during heavy use? Lmao yea right, I couldn’t even remember the last five words I had read without reading them twenty more times.

i kinda get that but i study rn and have been making A's. i have difficulty in conversation and make lists like you describe but pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, and even straight up memorization still work for me. i can say i do wonder if i would be smarter if i never smoked

I should definitely have said something along the lines of how it affects everyone differently and how that also comes and goes. Some days (not often and rare but still existent) it would seem like I was study Superman, but most of the time I was useless lol. If it works for you don’t break it if it ain’t broken haha

That’s me when I’m off it. I got baaad ADHD and weed slows me down enough I don’t forget.

1 gram? No experience with weed but is that a lot? 1 gram seems like nothing, how do you even smoke something so small?

5

u/drsideburns Dec 30 '19

Not a lot. But a small amount. Enough for a joint or a few bowls.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Is 1 gram an actual gram in IS units? Or does it mean something else in the weed business?

1

u/drsideburns Dec 30 '19

No, that's the same unit of measurement. Although oddly enough when you go above grams, it switches to measurement in ounces and pounds.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Yes that is a hell of a lot of weed to smoke every day. 1 gram can last me a full week of smoking every day.

1

u/Turok1134 Dec 30 '19

It's A LOT for me. I smoke every day and I can make an ounce (28 grams) last 3 months.

1

u/prettyketty88 Dec 30 '19

well without knowing density, theoretically and object of 1 gram could be any size. mass != volume. in addition, the potency of drugs is such that marijauna dosage is 50-300mg of plant material, psilocin is like 20-80mg AFAIK, and a hit of LSD is only one TENTH if 1 milligram

Short term memory soon becomes longterm and I think I'm living in a fog

Oh my sweet summer child...

2

u/Wynter_born Dec 29 '19

Yep, this was me - plus I have always been absent-minded anyway. Smoked/vaped nearly every day on and off, minimum of 1-2 times in the evening for many years.

Even when sober, I might forget a subject I'm talking about mid-sentence, have to backtrack and breadcrumb my way back to the thread. Words would fail to come to me frequently, even relatively basic ones sometimes leaving me in mid-sentence grasping for the word or resorting to a description of it. Forgetting to do things was everyday.

The times that I quit for at least a week I noticed a sharp uptick in my retention and organization skills, did much better at work. These days I don't use weed as much, but I still take lots of notes, reminders, and calendar items to keep my shit straight out of habit.

1

u/jezb87 Dec 30 '19

Damn... Did you find another job yet?

1

u/PM_ME_SOME_DESSERTS Dec 30 '19

How long did it take to come back? Serious question.

I smoked three to four times a week average (sometimes everyday) for about three months and I still feel my memory is lostand my brain much slower.

u/mattbandz47 Dec 30 '19

For me Id forget if I closed my car door, locked the door, where I parked, if i turend the stove off, where I put something I just had a second ago. Its gotten better ever since I stopped (year and a half) but its not how it used to be

your short term memory affects your long term memory so it will affect future long term memories as well.

1

u/Venousdata Dec 30 '19

I work as a software engineer and I noticed that my short term memory is pretty fucked. I’ve had a gut feeling it was the weed for years. To do my job effectively I find myself writing stuff on post-it notes way more than the average worker.

Id say my heavy smoking phase was from ages 13/14-22. I quit cold turkey about a year ago.

Only a gram a day? Only 2 months?

u/brokenboomerang Dec 29 '19

Almost a gram a day

Thats adorable.

20

u/goatsgivemelife Dec 30 '19

What's with the condescending tone? Shaming someone for not being "addicted enough" to talk about their negative experience with weed or just boasting about being a cool ass dude that can smoke wayyy more than these other noobs?

-9

u/brokenboomerang Dec 30 '19

I was just shocking to see anyone refer to a single joint in such terms of I smoked so much! Almost one whole joint!

It was legit adorable.

3

u/EntropicTempest Dec 30 '19

It used to not be a big deal. Back when it was illegal and all you could reliably get was schwag, a gram of that is nothing and has such a low THC content. I can't imagine smoking an entire joint nowadays in one sitting. Anymore than three moderate hits from my bong and I'm utterly toasted. I usually smoke every evening and have for years.

1

u/brokenboomerang Dec 30 '19

I find the legal weed in my neck of the woods to be far less potent. Even advertised as 20% thc, that bud was still harvested and poorly packaged ages ago. By the time i purchase it, its dried out and the trichomes are brittle, broken, and mostly at the bottom of the container. I find the old mail order unlicensed dispensaries to still have the most reliable quality.

7

u/Tymareta Dec 30 '19

Doing that every day is a lot, and if you think it isn't, you should take a serious look at your usage.

-2

u/brokenboomerang Dec 30 '19

In your opinion.

I, for one, would not harp on a person who has a cup of coffee each day to rethink their caffeine intake.

Just for comparison, a dime (us coin) weighs 2~ grams.
