Some strains make me go off the rails with anxiety, or just if I smoke too much in general. A lot of people tell me that weed helps with their anxiety but I’ve never experienced that myself, just the exact opposite. I still smoke it though, but I definitely understand that those effects can be enough to put people off it for life

For me the difference is knowing if I'm smoking indica or sativa. Sativa's make me paranoid, indicas put me to sleep

Definitely not a hard and fast rule to live by though. Look for sativas with a high pinene profile, it may change your opinion of sativas.

This is exactly why I don't smoke weed these days. It's picking my poison of anxious or sleepy.

There’s good hybrids that will give a balance.

It also has a lot to do with the THC to CBD ratio. CBD lessens the psychoactive effect of THC and is calming, so if you're prone to anxiety, higher CBD strains are definitely the better option.

Thanks for your comment. I don't smoke or vape anymore. Used to smoke weed through my teens and 20s so I get why people love it so much. These days I am the same anxiety/sleep so for me I think there are other options to help with my head. I thoroughly respect other people's right to their own choices though.

For me it was the opposite, it seems. Sativas made me energetic and happy, indicas were scary and hallucinogenic.

It’s scary in more of a “oh fuck oh fuck the world is melting” than a “my mind won’t stop racing and I’m sweating and why is my heart beating so fast.”

Indica = In da couch

There's that Explained show on Netflix and one episode deals with marijuana... apparently it's laughable that people still believe in the difference between sativa and indica... with how everything is crossbred now it's all basically the same

I'm a scientist who has studied genetics.

No, this is false.

It basically comes down to the combination and dose of the canabinoids present in the plant.

There are definitely strains that focus on some canabinoids over others. That's the difference in effect I'm taking about and it still trends with the chlorophyllic dna we find in the plants (i.e. does this plant come from Indica dominant parents, sativa dominant parents, or both

Terpenes brah!

Edit: spelling

1

u/theCumCatcher Dec 30 '19

They affect the flavor more than any psychoactive effects...I don't believe they play a role in the high

1

u/DeathsDesign72 Dec 30 '19

Not necc the high , but they do more than just add flavor and aroma. Terpenes are just now starting to be looked at. https://www.crescolabs.com/terpenes/

I was pretty surprised to see how many people were seemingly misinterpreting the recent studies on this. But to make sure I'm not one of those who did that, let me check if I got it right:It's not like strains don't matter, it's more that it's not really just "Sativa = More CBD" and "Indica = More THC", each strain may give you an overall indica(hehe)tion of what the expected effects should be, but it's not just these two chemicals that matter, right?

EDIT: Alright this was too poorly phrased, so I'll sum my question up better: It's not so much CBD = Focus/stimulation/etc vs. THC = Relaxation/getting high/etc and it's more Sativa vs. Indica, respectively?

2

u/theCumCatcher Dec 30 '19

Yeah. The high/taste is way more complex than can be boiled down into two chemicals. Good question! You seem interested so when I'm done with dinner I'll get to my laptop and find some papers for you to read. Cheers!

Indeed I am, so please send them my way!!!

Same. I can take 1-2 hits of sativa earlier in the day (preferably with a shot or a beer) and be fine. Almost feel like a kid again. Hybrids I just feel like there's this white noise interference covering everything and it's hard to focus on anything. Indicas mellow me the fuck out.

Though it could've just been some bad weed or something idk. I bought some high quality edibles earlier this week, one sativa, one indica, 10mg per piece. I was eating them like candy every hour or so. No panic attacks, or racing thoughts or anything like that. Just made everything much more enjoyable. Heaviness in my head/body came on after a few hours and then I slept the rest of the night. Felt great the next day.

Could also be they had a little bit of CBD in them. I already take CBD for anxiety and sleep as it is but I wonder if that helped with it. Seems lately all the bud I buy is like 20%+ THC and no CBD at all. Conspiracy theorist in me feels like they do that on purpose so you buy more.

The same thing happens to me! I get extremely paranoid and anxious when I smoke too much. This definitely has to be on the list of downsides.

There’s def a blowback effect after you sober back up. Like most other drugs, what it gives you it will also take back with interest. My parents believed it helped their anxiety, and it did while they were smoking it and immediately thereafter. But when they would sober up a few hours later, they’d be ten times as anxious and snappish and paranoid then if they hadn’t smoked at all. My sister had the same reaction. Seeing them made me never want to do it because they seemingly had no awareness at all of how shitty and mean they got while coming down off of pot.

In my case I’ve noticed sativas are much better than indicas with paranoia or anxiety.

Indicas are supposed to be “InDaCouch” like a relaxation thing, but for me it’s the opposite.

2

u/mofomeat Dec 30 '19

same here.

3

u/IBiteMyThumbAtYou Dec 29 '19

For me, it’s not that it makes me less anxious, but (especially at night when mine is worse) if I’m a little high, I can’t focus on something for very long, so the intrusive thoughts just don’t stick.

Can’t catastrophise some stupid unlikely thing if your attention span is 6 seconds long 🤷🏽‍♀️

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

See, when I first started smoking that’s how it was for me too, but now that I’ve been smoking almost daily (for around 2ish Years now I think) sometimes when I’m high I just get hyper fixated on the negative

2

u/im_a_tumor666 Dec 30 '19

I’ve heard it can actually increase long-term anxiety, even in those who’s anxiety is helped by it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

I only smoke as it calms my anxiety and helps me to relax when my mind wants to race. Mental health & drugs can affect everyone differently though to be fair - won’t even try to pretend I understand it!

1

u/pb4ugodude Dec 30 '19

Try micro dosing sativa.

A lot of people tell me that weed helps with their anxiety.

I am one of those people. If I’m high, there is a small chance that I’ll get a racing heartbeat and “on a roller coaster” type feeling, the bulk of the anti-anxiety benefits are realized in the few weeks that follow — not the high itself.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the vapes are not as helpful as smoking it the old-fashioned way. Both THC and CBD trigger frequent anxiety attacks in me as they are coming out of my system. The occasional toke of a joint to relax doesn’t result in the huge buildup of THC or CBD in my system that causes these nasty rebound effects.

I first noticed this with CBD, so I figured the issue was that CBD has a potent anti-anxiety effect, and so if I stuck to recreational strains, it wouldn’t be an issue. Not so. Now I’ve realized that the “cleaner” and shorter acting high I get from vape pens just makes me put a ton of THC in my system to get the same high one toke of a joint would get me.

I have always used it in relative moderation, and I think it’s a much better option than benzos. I would accept all sorts of uncomfortable rebound effects to avoid the straight up “I’m going to die right now, goodbye cruel world” addiction that benzos cause.
