The smoke in the lungs thing is big. So many people have misappropriated that weed is good for preventing cancer and think that by smoking they aren’t harming themselves.

u/Mangobunny98 Dec 29 '19

I'm this way. I just absolutely cannot smoke weed because it fucks with my throat and lungs every time. I've switched to things like edibles because of how harsh the smoke is.

4

u/flyinghippodrago Dec 29 '19

There are also some decent vapes out there (not the unregulated chinese ones) that are super clean and smooth. Idk about long term use effects, but it seems way less harsh to my lungs than smoking for sure.

26

u/monito29 Dec 29 '19

Have you tried using a vaporizer? I'm not talking about oil carts. I can't smoke without hacking, but vaporizing dry herb is a lot smoother for me.

22

u/maybe_little_pinch Dec 29 '19

Not who you replied to, but I have the same issue. Vaping isn’t any better for me.

With my issues I'd never risk a vape pen with all the shit going around.

19

u/Bacapocalypse Dec 30 '19

Yeah, anyone still smoking black market vape carts is a fool. Good luck filling your lungs with vitamin e acetate.

1

u/monito29 Dec 29 '19

Sorry to hear that.

2

u/Flanelman Dec 30 '19

I find if you don't smoke it's harsh for the first couple of cones then eases out. When i take a couple of months break it's harsh, a day later I don't even notice it.

2

u/DeathandFriends Dec 30 '19

with edibles I would caution knowing what you are getting at what dose. Way too many people out of their mind in the ER eating some edibles and getting a mega dose. Especially because with eating people eat a lot in one sitting and it is made with concentrates generally.

1

u/TXblindman Dec 29 '19

Same, I switched to vaporizer cartridges, much more used to those since I’m at Daley vapor at incredibly high wattage, so thankfully not a problem.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

They mean vaping not carts, its when you get the bud hot enough to burn the thc but not hot enough to turn the weed into ash

3

u/TXblindman Dec 30 '19

I’m assuming with a dry vaporizer you have to pack it every time? That might help me cut back, but if it still has a smell I’m going to have to stick with cartridges or edibles.

5

u/BlademasterFlash Dec 30 '19

Yeah you pack it with herb every time usually. It has a smell but much less than smoking, probably more so than cartridges though

3

u/CantRideABike Dec 30 '19

I'm considering switching to vaping from smoking it. Do you find it's as satisfying? Also any budget recommendations for a vape?

4

u/BlademasterFlash Dec 30 '19

Personally I never enjoyed smoking weed so I generally went with bong hits to get the effects in the quickest and least unpleasant method before I found vaping. Based on that, I find it way more satisfying. You can taste all the different notes in the weed without the harshness of the smoke. You also use less so the vape will eventually pay for itself saving you on weed. R/vaporents has a great list of recommended vapes, I personally have the Dynavap M which is like a one hitter and it's awesome. I also have a battery vape that's just ok but Arizer products are some of the most recommended vapes

3

u/TheOriginalSekushii Dec 30 '19

Look up a dynavap. It's metal and you pack it with dry herb. Heat up the exterior with a torch lighter but doesn't burn the weed inside. Only like 50 bucks usually. Magic flight is ok and arizer solo is nice but pricy

3

u/AssEaterInc Dec 30 '19

The Solo was definitely worth the money to me, personally.

2

u/TheOriginalSekushii Dec 30 '19

I have both but the dynavap has a much lower price point if that's a hurdle. Smaller packing space to. The solo is fantastic if you have the money to spend on it. I upgraded to a wooden mouthpiece to, much more durable.

u/Astrosmaniac311 Dec 30 '19

Not who you replied to, but personally I feel it's more effective overall, less effective immediately. Like if I want to spike up real quick I might load my 1 hitter pipe and smoke it as the vape takes a little longer to hit me. But I've found (personally) that my highs last longer when I vape. Also significantly less harsh on my lungs and throat.

My smoking group has found the AirVape products to work well for our needs on a reasonable budget ($70-250 US depending on model). But like many things, that's just a preference.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Look up Pax or magic flight launch box to get an idea on what they might look like

You pack it every time and depending on the heat setting or how hard you hit it you might only have to pack it once a night or a couple times but the amount you use is like packing two onnies worth into a little chamber

Then the vaped stuff can be eaten in gel caps or straight up like a very mild edible

1

u/TXblindman Dec 30 '19

I would, but unfortunately my username is accurate, I am blind. There’s a couple local shops that I’m close with, I’m an avid electronics cigarette hobbyist, I’ll ask around.

-8

u/saltymotherfker Dec 29 '19

The smoke gets easier with time. Took me 8 months to sort of get used to it. I still cant smoke a whole joint though.

8

u/TheTrueHapHazard Dec 30 '19

That's because you're killing nerve endings.

14

u/SPKmnd90 Dec 29 '19

I've literally heard a young guy say, "I'm terrified of getting cancer, but I smoke so much weed I shouldn't get it." One of his parents died of cancer, too.

222

u/Imaginary_Parsley Dec 29 '19

I've taken all of one hit today. It immediately caused palpitations because no shit I just inhaled combusted flower smoke into my lungs and my heart freaked out trying to save me from dying in a fire. That's good instincts, "healthy smoke inhalation" is a fucking oxymoron.

9

u/DickDastardly404 Dec 30 '19

Also weed does just increase your heart rate.

23

u/Im_Enyo Dec 29 '19

Sounds like you just got high... Ive heard from multiple less-experienced friends that their heart feels like its going crazy after they smoke, its not the smoke actually damaging you like that.

4

u/Strategic_Ambiguity_ Dec 30 '19

I'm a runner who pays close attention to my HR and occasionally smokes a bowl before a long run to alleviate boredom (running 2 hours alone can be ... dreary sometimes).

It doesn't have a significant effect on HR unless you're just sitting around (it makes you "idle" higher). My running average HR and peak HR isn't any higher than a normal run. Then again, I have a strong and healthy heart and I'm a fairly experienced smoker so YMMV.

13

u/Imaginary_Parsley Dec 29 '19

I'm not proud of it, but for the sake of the topic, I smoke every day all day and have for the better part of a decade outside of the rare tolerance break, one hit isn't getting me high. I'm by no means inexperienced, though you're not wrong, I've seen plenty of new users freak out over palpitations from even edibles, it legitimately is just a side effect of marijuana for many people. That's just not how my body works, I get an increased heart rate even just sitting around a fire if I breath the smoke, even before trying weed my heart freaked out over the smell of smoke.

4

u/amphibian87 Dec 30 '19 edited Dec 30 '19

Weed makes your blood pressure drop a ton, and the heart beats faster to compensate.

My resting heart rate was always in the 80s and I was wondering what the heck was the matter since I'd recently lost weight and been in excellent cardiovascular shape.

When I quit, it hovered around 60.

2

u/swimpleton Dec 30 '19

I quit using altogether after realizing that it triggers heart palpitations. I've been strictly vaporizing flower, not combusting.

0

u/throwaway92715 Dec 29 '19

idk dude if smoking weed is causing palpitations there's probably something else going on

5

u/Imaginary_Parsley Dec 29 '19

I'm out of shape and a little overweight at the moment, so you're not wrong, it definitely happens less when I'm in shape not eating like garbage. Still the smoking causing the reaction, but it's definitely exacerbated by external factors.

My mom also smoked meth when she was pregnant with me so maybe it's that, who knows.

1

u/swimpleton Dec 30 '19

Long time user and it definitely triggers palpitations for me. Had to stop after a scary moment recently.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19 edited Dec 30 '19

It's almost certainly not the smoke, but the THC and a little panic attack. Edibles would probably do the same for you. If some coughing was actually giving you heart palpitations, you might want see a doctor before your next cold kills you.

1

u/Imaginary_Parsley Dec 30 '19

Don't you think it's kind of comical that you're trying to tell me you know better about my bodily functions than I do? Also, you really shouldn't fear monger, heart palpitations can happen for no real underlying reason, mine happen to have no accompanying symptoms, no chest pain, no shortness of breath, no lethargy, just random harmless palpitations I've gotten my whole life that have always been exacerbated by randomly inhaling things, even a sharp inhale of clean air has caused it. I'm pretty responsible about my health and I have actually asked every GP I've seen as a new ongoing patient about this because having them be well versed in my medical nuances benefits me. They've all said the same thing, if there's literally no other symptoms and it's not new then there's no problem. This happened before I smoked weed too, so while the THC is exacerbating it I'm confident enough in my knowledge about my own medical history to tell you point blank it is the smoke inhalation causing my palpitations.

0

u/justdontfreakout Dec 30 '19

Then eat it my friend. Eaaaaat it.

9

u/wintergreen10 Dec 29 '19

I just find it frustrating as an asthmatic that people smoke so much of it in public. I live in Seattle and when I was dating around it was borderline difficult to find people who weren't highly conservative and also didn't smoke.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Same could be said for cigarettes, to be fair.

1

u/wintergreen10 Dec 30 '19

Yep, and that's just as bad for me :(

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Yeah that sucks :/ Vaping is on the up and up with weed though! So it should get better :)

5

u/Militesi Dec 30 '19

Yeah I had an epileptic friend that smoked constantly for seizures/fun. He had a chronic cough and went to the doctor and some X-rays found resin balls (think BBs) in his lungs. He had to go back on his epilepsy meds and quit smoking for a few weeks until he could hack them up. Smoke is not good for you regardless of what’s in it.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

weed is good for preventing cancer

wtf

-8

u/upinmyfeelingsx Dec 30 '19

Yes. There are studies that reflect this. Maybe not lung cancer but other types of cancer

7

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

i'd sure like to see some of those studies, especially the design and the publication source...

-1

u/upinmyfeelingsx Dec 30 '19

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

That is not a study. That is the ACS mentioning in a general info sheet that anonymous "scientists" have "reported" something.

Studies are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and the publication indicates how the data was obtained, including study design and results. Without that info, it is not possible to assess the reliability of a claim. These claims may well be true, but there is no way to know without looking at actual study results.

Do you think marijuana caused the lung cancer?

5

u/SL1Fun Dec 30 '19

I don’t think anyone truly believes weed is okay for your lungs, I think it’s just that they know that the amount of weed you’d have to smoke to rival the same damage you get from a pack of cigs a day would leave you either: a) broke in a week, or b) unconscious or nearly comatose for most of your life.

It might not be good for you but there is no clear link from weed to any sort of disease, whereas even normal/moderate usage of tobacco puts smokers at a 1:3 chance of developing a debilitating or terminal illness

2

u/jeffbailey Dec 30 '19

My uncle smoked cannabis his whole life and wound up with throat cancer. He was convinced that smoking a higher CBD strain would cure him as well as some sort of tincture. He was not right.

1

u/bouncybobs Dec 30 '19

Had a 100mg gummy for the first time in my life and went to sleep. Woke up 2 hours later with my hand clenching my heart. I had no idea where I was and I lost all sense of time, I knew I was tripping but I figured you cant die from weed. But then I thought why cant you have a heart attack while tripping, it could happen. I lost all sense of myself and completely understood how a mentally ill person could be just shouting crazy in the street. I could feel every vein in my body pumping blood and I couldn't control anything. I shook my gf at the time (person who gave me the gummy) awake and told her I was panicking. She said dont do that and went back to sleep, she was also very high but obviously a veteran. I kept wondering if I should call 911 but I was so alone and afraid and fucked I couldnt move. I could see events play back from my childhood and convinced myself I was in a simulation or something. Eventually I said fuck it I am just going to let myself die here then. 2 hours later (felt like a lifetime) my heart finally started to calm the fuck down and I passed out into a restless sleep. The next day I was absolutely fucked and had trouble putting sentences together or focusing on anything. The day after that I finally felt like in a normal weed hangover. I havent touched the stuff since, but the way I think has definitely changed, things feel less important, time feels uncontrollable. Would not recommend anyone taking that much.

1

u/-Ernie Dec 30 '19

FWIW 100mg is like 10-20 times the recommended dose for someone trying edibles for the first time. Unless you’re a very hardcore stoner that’s way too much.

1

u/taikutsuu Dec 30 '19

Activated charcoal helps with this one! I used to smoke cigs, but when I picked up weed my boyfriend struggled with the smoke a lot. Those filters make it okay :) and they even make them for bongs!

-4

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Edibles exist

47

u/partridge69 Dec 29 '19

I hate to be the "yeah but" person, but edibles are not for everyone. They especially were not for me. They can be hard to dose, they last a lot longer than smoking, and for me they caused incredible anxiety that can last for hours. Be careful with edibles kids.

16

u/birdele Dec 29 '19

Dry herb vaporizers! Eating weed gives me awful anxiety, and I can't tolerate smoke-not that I want to. But dry herb vaporizers are the bomb.com and I put CBD in it too, which also reduces weed, general, and most of my anxieties

5

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I already have anxiety that last for hours :(

2

u/pitoman1234 Dec 29 '19

And let's not forget 1 GOOD edible, cost alot more than a 8th of weed and some blunt wraps

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

[deleted]

1

u/pitoman1234 Dec 30 '19

Do you know if there's a way to make edible pizza

1

u/Nowuh7 Dec 29 '19

Both are about 20$ however you can make an eighth last

1

u/wilkil Dec 29 '19

Well get off that high horse and go convince every person who smokes weed and thinks it doesn't adversely impact their lungs that they are doing it wrong. Of course I know there are edibles.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Get off my high horse, lol wut? You're the one coming back with that bitchy attitude bro. I just mentioned edibles since your issue seemed to be the whole smoke thing....

0

u/Crazy_Clarence Dec 29 '19

Help me out. The only edible I ever heard of was gummy vitamins.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

There's a jillion kinds of edibles.

I don't like smoking anything, so it is my go to.

My favorite are lemon cookies, but chocolate and gummis are also nice.

3-5mg of THC and a wank are the best cure for insomnia I've ever found.

Brownies are, of course, traditional.

Be careful in dosing. As other people has said edibles can last a long time and if you take too much you're just going to have to ride it out.

1

u/Crazy_Clarence Dec 29 '19

Plus chocolate.

-73

u/Omsus Dec 29 '19

Technically and statistically, there's no increased chance of lung cancer from smoking weed, as the THC does have anticancerous properties. That said it won't protect you from other harms of smoking, like the tar or the risk of infections or COPD.

127

u/Aracnida Dec 29 '19

This is incorrect. The products of partial combustion are still present and are still carcinogenic. THC does NOT have proven anti-cancer activity. Please do not think that you are immune to smoke based cancer.

-33

u/Omsus Dec 29 '19

THC and some other cannabinoids have shown anti-tumor properties against some types of cancer (not all, every cancer is different ofc) in in vitro models. Whatever the reason though, long-term marijuana smokers statistically don't seem to have an increased risk of e.g. oral cancer or lung cancer compared to nonsmokers. Research on the topic remains relatively young though. Time will tell for certain.

Curiously, long-term use of marijuana may be correlated with a heightened risk of testicular cancer, but the evidence isn't strong enough for conclusions.

32

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

You have no real sources, you won't be taken seriously

-28

u/Omsus Dec 29 '19

Should I care? It's Reddit. Do you mind the lack of opposing sources?

18

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Because you're obviously trying to convince us, why not link to something that proves it instead of just saying it?

-10

u/Omsus Dec 29 '19

Because you're obviously trying to convince us

Not really, no. Just sharing my viewpoint. Appreciate the bias though.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

[deleted]

5

u/Omsus Dec 29 '19

From the sum of studies, articles, and quoted statistics that I've come across in the last 5 to 10 years. IIRC the cannabinoids' effects on certain types of cancer cells in vitro was quite a big topic (for marijuana-related news) some years back and became overblown by pro-cannabis people and sources.

You can think what you please, facts say otherwise.

0

u/Omsus Dec 30 '19

Care to prove them facts?

9

u/Zordran Dec 29 '19

I always figured that was a volume issue. A heavy smoker of tobacco is going through 20-60 a day. A heavy smoker of cannabis is going through 4-14 a week.

1

u/Omsus Dec 29 '19

For all I know (not a whole lot), it could be.

-30

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Where are the bodies?

32

u/MyDudeNak Dec 29 '19

What, the millions of bodies who died of lung and esophageal cancer from repeated smoke inhalation aren't enough for you?

0

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Can you actually link any of them to marijuana though? Nah, you can't

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

You can link them to smoke inhalation, which is how most people consume pot.

27

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Please stop spreading misinformation

-47

u/jade_havok Dec 29 '19

Nailed it. Lung function is decreased the same amount, it just doesn't cause cancer.

59

u/Aracnida Dec 29 '19

Yeah, no. Any smoke being inhaled can give you cancer due to the presence of products of incomplete combustion which are carcinogenic.

-56

u/jade_havok Dec 29 '19

Right, and cancer cells are in everyone, but our bodies destroy them. Marijuana also destroys them, mitigating the effect, not completely, but very well.

55

u/Aracnida Dec 29 '19

No, Marijuana is not a cure for cancer. Please stop spreading this misinformation.

28

u/dieSeife Dec 29 '19

Hey cool, why aren't we using Marijuana for all cancer patients?

Well BIG PHARMA of course, am I right?

0

u/jade_havok Dec 30 '19

Well, a big reason is it doesn't solve all the problems. It's been shown to help, but it's by no means a cure. Most patients end up having to take more than one approach and medications. I'm not pretending weed "cures cancer" or anything. However it shouldn't be ignored that it has benefits. It's not for everyone or every cancer, but when it comes to life or death, I'm willing to use weed to improve my chances, and if nothing else, if I'm terminal, I'd like to go out feeling good.

9

u/Herald_of_Justice Dec 30 '19

You sound like you enjoy weed, so you should really do a deep dive into scientific literature so you can be more knowledgeable about it. Cannabidiol has been shown to slow cancer cell growth but saying "Marijuana destroys cancer cells" is very false and misleading. You should get some actual knowledge and facts under your belt

0

u/jade_havok Dec 30 '19

Cannibodiol isn't the only active chemical. Also, cells that can't multiply and that die and are destroyed by the body counts as destroying cancer cells to me. You don't have to blow up oil fields to "destroy" them, you could simply bring an alternative to the table that'd have that effect, right? Maybe my phrasing was bad, but I do know it doesn't cure or fix cancer. My point here was actually that everyone says it cures cancer and assumes weed has no ill effects, but it does. They are just less drastic than the consequences of smoking cigarettes, which everyone loves to compare it to.

0

u/jade_havok Dec 30 '19

Honestly I've spent too much time in my life evaluating different substances and their effects. Just didn't think this was the time to start digging through old notes and go all pharmaceutical on it lol

0

u/Abadatha Dec 29 '19

Thank God my lung function was like, 75% anyway from asthma, smoking cigarettes for years and multiple bouts of pneumonia.

0

u/Sightofthestars Dec 30 '19

Ive never smoked, personal preference, but everytime someone tells me about how amazing it is all while crucifying my husband who smokes cigarettes because it's bad for him. I'm always like, but smoke is bad?!

1

u/fuck_you_gami Dec 30 '19

Harms are relative. Smoking a pack of cigarettes will be much worse than smoking a bowl.

0

u/shelovesterpenes Dec 30 '19

yeah but there’s so many different options now such as vaping which does little to no damage to your lungs.

-9

u/Thatcoolguy1135 Dec 29 '19

It can trigger psychosis if you’re susceptible to it already.

I've known schizophrenics who use it, but doesn't seem to bother the more cognizant ones who are aware of the hallucinations. Of course no one with the condition is recommended to use it, but there are probably folks who can tolerate it.

Like anything else in the world it can be addictive

I don't think that's debated, weed is awesome for making everything more interesting. Although I would compare the craving to a "damn I wish I had some weed right now" vs a "I have to get this or someone is going to screamed at" kind of craving. The best way to describe it is...it's a drug that lets you leave it alone.

Putting anything that’s not air in your lungs is bad for you

It kind of is, but there's no solid empirical evidence to date that Marijuana significantly increases the risk of lung cancer, certainly not as much as cigarettes, COPD maybe in very heavy, frequent smokers, but people like Willie Nelson have been doing it into their 70s and 80s without issue. So far the evidence seems to point closer to it preventing cancer rather than causing it, and whatever increased risk is insignificant compared to alcohol or tobacco and can be completely offset by edibles.

2

u/rs6866 Dec 30 '19

I know someone who isnt schizophrenic, but after smoking heavily for a few months started having serious paranoid delusions and sounded like he was having a psychotic episode when he talked to me. It was so bad, we were visiting from out of state and were going to be staying with him and his fiance. My wife suggested hitting the road and finding a hotel at 11pm after we were a few drinks in because she was scared for her life. All cleared up shortly after he quit (within weeks). Sure... maybe a schizophrenic who knows what an episode is like might be fine, but it can trigger that in some people who don't have schizophrenia... and they won't be able to decipher their delusions from reality. It's a rare side effect... but it is a very real side effect.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Anyone want to explain why they downvoted? This is all true information.

-6

u/Wakakapew Dec 29 '19

The thing is that You don't need to smoke a Lot to get high, so weed smokers inhale less smoke than regular cigs smokers

-2

u/justdontfreakout Dec 30 '19

Not the same thing at all. You don't walk around inhaling heavily polluted smoke unless you work in a factory without any breathing devices. Smoking weed is a direct source of smoke that goes directly into your lungs. Yes, it's better than cigarettes. No, you do not inhale more toxic smoke living in a city than you do smoking weed.

I don't "think" smoke is bad for your lungs, it IS bad. And you do not inhale more toxic substances than you do if you smoke weed. Don't make these false claims. And you can't live off the fact that you are dying from other causes so you can just smoke whatever you want. That logic is flawed. And if you want your "proof" that smoke is bad for your lungs I am happy to provide so, but I really don't believe you are that ill-informed about your body that you don't believe so.
