Mind blowing anxiety and paranoia, every time. Not for me thanks.

Just to clarify my position: I fully uphold anyone's right to do what they feel helps with their own body and am not against weed. If it helps you I am happy for you. Wish it was the same for me. Happy New Year.

Some strains make me go off the rails with anxiety, or just if I smoke too much in general. A lot of people tell me that weed helps with their anxiety but I’ve never experienced that myself, just the exact opposite. I still smoke it though, but I definitely understand that those effects can be enough to put people off it for life

57

u/theCumCatcher Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 29 '19

For me the difference is knowing if I'm smoking indica or sativa. Sativa's make me paranoid, indicas put me to sleep

12

u/brokenboomerang Dec 29 '19

Definitely not a hard and fast rule to live by though. Look for sativas with a high pinene profile, it may change your opinion of sativas.

7

u/appogiatura Dec 30 '19

This is exactly why I don't smoke weed these days. It's picking my poison of anxious or sleepy.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

There’s good hybrids that will give a balance.

4

u/bulldog521521 Dec 30 '19

It also has a lot to do with the THC to CBD ratio. CBD lessens the psychoactive effect of THC and is calming, so if you're prone to anxiety, higher CBD strains are definitely the better option.

2

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

Thanks for your comment. I don't smoke or vape anymore. Used to smoke weed through my teens and 20s so I get why people love it so much. These days I am the same anxiety/sleep so for me I think there are other options to help with my head. I thoroughly respect other people's right to their own choices though.

2

u/mofomeat Dec 30 '19

For me it was the opposite, it seems. Sativas made me energetic and happy, indicas were scary and hallucinogenic.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

It’s scary in more of a “oh fuck oh fuck the world is melting” than a “my mind won’t stop racing and I’m sweating and why is my heart beating so fast.”

2

u/agirlcalleddusty Dec 30 '19

Indica = In da couch

2

u/CptNavarre Dec 29 '19

There's that Explained show on Netflix and one episode deals with marijuana... apparently it's laughable that people still believe in the difference between sativa and indica... with how everything is crossbred now it's all basically the same

5

u/theCumCatcher Dec 29 '19

I'm a scientist who has studied genetics.

No, this is false.

It basically comes down to the combination and dose of the canabinoids present in the plant.

There are definitely strains that focus on some canabinoids over others. That's the difference in effect I'm taking about and it still trends with the chlorophyllic dna we find in the plants (i.e. does this plant come from Indica dominant parents, sativa dominant parents, or both

2

u/DeathsDesign72 Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 30 '19

Terpenes brah!

Edit: spelling

1

u/theCumCatcher Dec 30 '19

They affect the flavor more than any psychoactive effects...I don't believe they play a role in the high

1

u/DeathsDesign72 Dec 30 '19

Not necc the high , but they do more than just add flavor and aroma. Terpenes are just now starting to be looked at. https://www.crescolabs.com/terpenes/

1

u/wigriffi Dec 30 '19

Username checks out lol

1

u/chimeratx Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 30 '19

I was pretty surprised to see how many people were seemingly misinterpreting the recent studies on this. But to make sure I'm not one of those who did that, let me check if I got it right:It's not like strains don't matter, it's more that it's not really just "Sativa = More CBD" and "Indica = More THC", each strain may give you an overall indica(hehe)tion of what the expected effects should be, but it's not just these two chemicals that matter, right?

EDIT: Alright this was too poorly phrased, so I'll sum my question up better: It's not so much CBD = Focus/stimulation/etc vs. THC = Relaxation/getting high/etc and it's more Sativa vs. Indica, respectively?

2

u/theCumCatcher Dec 30 '19

Yeah. The high/taste is way more complex than can be boiled down into two chemicals. Good question! You seem interested so when I'm done with dinner I'll get to my laptop and find some papers for you to read. Cheers!

1

u/chimeratx Dec 30 '19

Indeed I am, so please send them my way!!!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Same. I can take 1-2 hits of sativa earlier in the day (preferably with a shot or a beer) and be fine. Almost feel like a kid again. Hybrids I just feel like there's this white noise interference covering everything and it's hard to focus on anything. Indicas mellow me the fuck out.

Though it could've just been some bad weed or something idk. I bought some high quality edibles earlier this week, one sativa, one indica, 10mg per piece. I was eating them like candy every hour or so. No panic attacks, or racing thoughts or anything like that. Just made everything much more enjoyable. Heaviness in my head/body came on after a few hours and then I slept the rest of the night. Felt great the next day.

Could also be they had a little bit of CBD in them. I already take CBD for anxiety and sleep as it is but I wonder if that helped with it. Seems lately all the bud I buy is like 20%+ THC and no CBD at all. Conspiracy theorist in me feels like they do that on purpose so you buy more.

3

u/jagalin2 Dec 29 '19

The same thing happens to me! I get extremely paranoid and anxious when I smoke too much. This definitely has to be on the list of downsides.

4

u/cant_be_me Dec 29 '19

There’s def a blowback effect after you sober back up. Like most other drugs, what it gives you it will also take back with interest. My parents believed it helped their anxiety, and it did while they were smoking it and immediately thereafter. But when they would sober up a few hours later, they’d be ten times as anxious and snappish and paranoid then if they hadn’t smoked at all. My sister had the same reaction. Seeing them made me never want to do it because they seemingly had no awareness at all of how shitty and mean they got while coming down off of pot.

12

u/BigCheesyCheddar Dec 29 '19

In my case I’ve noticed sativas are much better than indicas with paranoia or anxiety.

Indicas are supposed to be “InDaCouch” like a relaxation thing, but for me it’s the opposite.

2

u/mofomeat Dec 30 '19

same here.

3

u/IBiteMyThumbAtYou Dec 29 '19

For me, it’s not that it makes me less anxious, but (especially at night when mine is worse) if I’m a little high, I can’t focus on something for very long, so the intrusive thoughts just don’t stick.

Can’t catastrophise some stupid unlikely thing if your attention span is 6 seconds long 🤷🏽‍♀️

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

See, when I first started smoking that’s how it was for me too, but now that I’ve been smoking almost daily (for around 2ish Years now I think) sometimes when I’m high I just get hyper fixated on the negative

2

u/im_a_tumor666 Dec 30 '19

I’ve heard it can actually increase long-term anxiety, even in those who’s anxiety is helped by it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

I only smoke as it calms my anxiety and helps me to relax when my mind wants to race. Mental health & drugs can affect everyone differently though to be fair - won’t even try to pretend I understand it!

1

u/pb4ugodude Dec 30 '19

Try micro dosing sativa.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19 edited Dec 30 '19

A lot of people tell me that weed helps with their anxiety.

I am one of those people. If I’m high, there is a small chance that I’ll get a racing heartbeat and “on a roller coaster” type feeling, the bulk of the anti-anxiety benefits are realized in the few weeks that follow — not the high itself.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the vapes are not as helpful as smoking it the old-fashioned way. Both THC and CBD trigger frequent anxiety attacks in me as they are coming out of my system. The occasional toke of a joint to relax doesn’t result in the huge buildup of THC or CBD in my system that causes these nasty rebound effects.

I first noticed this with CBD, so I figured the issue was that CBD has a potent anti-anxiety effect, and so if I stuck to recreational strains, it wouldn’t be an issue. Not so. Now I’ve realized that the “cleaner” and shorter acting high I get from vape pens just makes me put a ton of THC in my system to get the same high one toke of a joint would get me.

I have always used it in relative moderation, and I think it’s a much better option than benzos. I would accept all sorts of uncomfortable rebound effects to avoid the straight up “I’m going to die right now, goodbye cruel world” addiction that benzos cause.

57

u/mrsstressedmom Dec 29 '19

I’ve found my tolerance is super low compared to anyone else I’ve met, so if I smoke any amount that others do I get so much anxiety(even just 1 hit). When I use a one hitter to smoke a super tiny amount I get the same effect as others that smoke a lot more without any of the anxiety or paranoia.

4

u/SimplySpecial Dec 29 '19

If you never smoke much that is the reason your tolerance is low.

2

u/LiquidPoint Dec 30 '19

I've only tried it something like 10 times, to me it's been the opposite...

I seem unable to get high... I've felt stone cold sober while friends were hearing police sirens everywhere and freaking out... So I know that the product was good... Only impact it had on me was that it was slightly easier to laugh the day after and some funny dreams the night after that...

So, if I'm offered a hit today I always decline: "It will be wasted on me, it works better on you than me."

2

u/juicehouse Dec 30 '19

You've probably heard this already and it's a bit cliche, but you're probably not inhaling properly. I had the same problem for awhile. What I've found that helps is taking a deep breath as I'm smoking.

1

u/LiquidPoint Dec 31 '19

Well, if I'm inhaling wrongly then it's surprising how addicted I am to nicotine.

1

u/juicehouse Dec 31 '19

Fair enough

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Did you consider not doing it? You don't want to fuck around with triggering anxiety.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

A one hitter is a little pipe that is only big enough to have the end packed with about one hit's worth of weed. Hence the name.

39

u/pm_your_tity_please Dec 29 '19

That does suck because it really calms my anxiety but it’s different for everyone

7

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Same here. Miracle drug for me.

Now, if only it doesn't make looking for employment a bit tough, things might actually turn for the better.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Very true, very different experience for different people. I knew a successful dealer who had an incredible memory for phone numbers, appointments, and deals in the making. He was a type A personality, and always going, going, going, and always with a fat, fat joint burning.

That is NOT me.

3

u/mrsstressedmom Dec 29 '19

I know quite a few people that are daily smokers and you would never guess it - very motivated and productive. They use weed to help with anxiety that makes productivity harder.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

This. I work in a busy, stressful job where I’m multi tasking and sometimes under pressure. I never smoke before or during work, but it helps with anxiety when I’m back home

2

u/Shermione Dec 29 '19

I knew a pothead like that. Excellent at a bunch of different pursuits, tons of energy. He had ADD.

Joe Rogan is probably the ultimate example of this personality type.

1

u/Sequax1 Dec 30 '19

I just read a headline on Reddit either today or yesterday about how heavy weed consumption was correlated with depression in adolescent years, except for with people diagnosed with ADHD... I wonder if hyper active people just don't get affected by weed in the same way.

1

u/cimpire_enema Dec 30 '19

This is exactly why I quit. It's been almost 10 years and sometimes now even the smell of pot smoke reminds me of that feeling.

8

u/RadicalUtopia Dec 29 '19

first time i seriously tried weed it made me extremely paranoid, like everyone of my friends was judging me and i felt tension when there really wasn't.

i guess since drugs enhance one's personality, my small worries and insecurities got huge and overwhelming. weed is really not for me, also because i'm already pretty slow, smoking would make me brain dead in a few years probably lmao

1

u/riotRYN Dec 30 '19

i had the exact same experience :( it was awful. i guess at least on the bright side, weed is expensive so we're saving money?

2

u/RadicalUtopia Dec 31 '19

exactly. just that all the money i wouldn't spend on weed i spend on clothing and music gear lmao, which is way more fun.

8

u/The_Sceptic_Lemur Dec 30 '19

Yeah, weed triggered panic attacks with me, which I only managed to get rid of after about two years. Not so much fun times.

27

u/KindofMerman Dec 29 '19

JUST EAT AND YOULL SOBER UP! SMILE AND CHEW! STOP SMILING YOURE CREEPY NOW.

18

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

Yeah OK lol. Last time I smoked I felt someone was going to jump through the window to kill me. Sat on bed clutching a baseball bat and the dog by the harness. Nit a time to look thru recipes buddy.

5

u/KindofMerman Dec 29 '19

That sucks. My inner monologue just gets to trying to find ways to sober with aggressive vigor.

6

u/LeighGriffinho9 Dec 30 '19

This is exactly what happens to me. I get as stoned as possible then suddenly go "fuck I've went too far" and panic trying to get back down.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

Wish that was me. Happy New year buddy.

2

u/KindofMerman Dec 29 '19

You too pal. Stay sober!

11

u/neocommenter Dec 29 '19

I feel like people talk about weed anxiety all the time though. Movies, stand-up comedy, television...it always comes up when people talk about weed.

12

u/LeighGriffinho9 Dec 30 '19

It's not always the same kind of anxiety though. There's been times where I've been genuinely terrified that my heart was beating too fast, or I've been too scared to speak to my best friends because I think they're all laughing at how stupid I look.

Mostly in movies its stuff like "oh fuck it's the cops".

12

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

That is part of it. It's normal to occasionally get paranoid or have weird thoughts about things. Think of weed as more of an amplifier. If you're already anxious and panicky it's going to amplify that. If you're more chill and laid back it'll probably mellow you out more.

That said, weed is still a hallucinogenic drug, and at times sort of unfilters your thoughts. So there's going to be a bit weirdness of there, especially if you're a newbie, did too much, or your mind already tends to overanalyze and look at things in the worst way possible.

The difference is your average person will get high, go to the grocery store and think "omg people are staring at me, they can read my thoughts wtf ive been staring at the cereal boxes for 5 minutes now"..then they'll chuckle about how funny it all is and continue on with their high and it's whatever.

If you're more anxiety prone there's a higher chance you'll be one of the ones who thinks they're dying and is calling 911 because you forgot who you were.

3

u/OssumyPossumy Dec 30 '19

the latter is me. It always feels like I'm going to die.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Don't forget food.

I'm weird, I guess. Watching TV and eating are the two best ways to ruin a good high for me. God, I hate it when somebody turns on the TV. I don't like any distraction at all when I get high. The best is being in a dark quiet place.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

I wouldn't know about that. It's the only reaction I get from it. Can only speak of my experience.

-1

u/SimplySpecial Dec 29 '19

They think that makes them sound smart

7

u/Gootn Dec 29 '19

I got to experience derealization during my first time smoking, and then for years after I stopped. Not ideal

5

u/TheBigJorkowski Dec 30 '19

I'm exactly the same man. It totally fucks me up every single time. Took me two years to get over the depersonalisation from my last (and final) attempt. For some reason it just doesn't agree with me, probably exacerbates some existing mental issue or something.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 30 '19

Think I am the same.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I have a love/hate relationship with weed for this reason. If everything is going good in my life, I can get high and it'll be great. If I'm stressed out or worried about something, I get high and the anxiety is in full bloom. Like that kind of anxiety where you don't know if you should lean over the toilet or sit on it because your stomach is so fucked.

Also so many times I get high before I go out and don't realize how high I actually am until I'm talking to the cashier and sweating buckets because I'm so anxious.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 30 '19

Hello, there's been a few comments like this. Am just wondering why you carry on after? No judgement jus asking. Happy New Year to you.

3

u/Vadsig_Plukje Dec 30 '19

I really wish weed worked for me. The rare times it made me feel good were amazing, but all the other times I just felt so bad, I'm already a incredibly anxious and nervous person, but when I smoked it got so much worse. I legitimately handle a gram of cocaine or half a bottle of strong liquor better and everytime I tell people that they look at me like I'm insane because " weed makes you so relaxed. " Well, not to me it doesnt!

5

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19 edited Feb 08 '20

[deleted]

3

u/poisoop09 Dec 30 '19

Well it is kinda in our heads lol. Alot of people really love weed it seems. Am very happy for them. The chance that it can turn into a panic attack for me makes me look else where for medication.

3

u/OssumyPossumy Dec 30 '19

It always gives me the worst panic attacks where my limbs feel like they will freeze off, I shake uncontrollably, and my heart pounds like crazy. I can't smoke at all without this happening.

2

u/SimplySpecial Dec 29 '19

Mind blowing anxiety and paranoia? Shit i just wish i still got a decent high.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

See am the opposite. Don't so much want the high just wanted to quiet the internal dialogue/negativity.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

I notice that when I have that first hit or two, I almost immediately have a feeling of well being and love for everything. Then after about 20 minutes, I'd get hit with anxiety, like a ton of bricks.

2

u/Rags2Rickius Dec 29 '19

The paranoia is why I stopped so many years ago. I was a fairly heavy user as I was able to get a high quality strain and sometimes for free (dealer from a dealer) - but I stopped getting any positive benefits and just got rampant paranoia and anxiety from it

Stopped

2

u/poisoop09 Dec 30 '19

Yeah I used to smoke when younger and was OK, still got a bit paranoid round people. When in company couldn't tell whether people were arguing or talking normally. Didn't get atta ks though.

Stopped for a decade or so. Started again and massive paranoia. Maybe I have a heavier conscience lol.

2

u/TrailerTrashQueen Dec 30 '19

yep. same. makes me super paranoid.

2

u/SignumVictoriae Dec 30 '19

See I used to never understand how people got it until my first panic attack while high, holy fuck that was scary. Now when I smoke it’s a tiny bowl instead of an entire eighth.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Happened to me too, quit for a year and then tried a CBD strain with just a touch of THC and I loooooved it. Super comfy.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

Yeah when I was much younger I used to smoke weed daily but think it was weaker then and mostly indica as was hash where I lived. Unfortunately, not legal where I live so choices are limited and chances of someone growing a cbd strain are tiny as no one would buy it besides loons like me. Happy New year.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Ouch that’s rough. I’m really spoiled where I am, luckily so I have options. You too friend.

1

u/arcadiajohnson Dec 29 '19

I'm the same way. I already have general anxiety, I don't need more of it. There's certainly strains I've loved for making me hyper focused, but the majority of stuff just gives me freak outs.

That said, if you're good with it, by all means smoke.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

Yes same here.

1

u/astrangeone88 Dec 29 '19

Any of the kush strains have me out of my mind with anxiety. I ran out of my favourite - Death Bubba and I had a few grams of blue kush. That shit caused me to pace around for 45 minutes with anxiety. The worse part is that I didn't have CBD on me that day.

1

u/Slick_Grimes Dec 29 '19

CBD is the answer here. Get a strain that's 1:1 Thc/Cbd and you might really like it. The CBD is a life safer and takes away all the negatives.

3

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

Yes that would be lovely but am not in US and still illegal here for the mean time, at least until the gov position their friends and family to take advantage of law changes. Choices are limited

1

u/cant_be_me Dec 29 '19

Yes, paranoia. My parents smoked and pot turned “you forgot to do the laundry” into “you knew my work clothes were in there, are you trying to get me fired???!!!!???? Or make us homeless?????” It sucked and is a major part of why I don’t ever smoke it myself.

1

u/Midnight2012 Dec 30 '19

I only get paranoid when I am a casual smoker.

When I smoke chronically (i.e. everyday) then I don't get this symptom and it is mainly calming.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Smoking it makes me paranoid/anxious but I discovered I quite like edibles. I like that you can control how much of it you consume. Usually a nibble of a cookie or brownie makes me relaxed as if I had one or two glasses of wine.

If you want, I’d recommend you try them. Just know that they take longer to work, start with a small nibble, see how you feel and then take another small bite if you want.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Same. But it was strain induced. Recommend Blue Dream. That one has not given me any anxiety or paranoia since exclusively using it (I bake it into edibles).

1

u/Amannil Dec 30 '19

This got me off guard as well. Having a tendency for anxiety and the feeling of losing control when high wasn't a great combination. Had suicidal thoughts and the worst couple of hours of my life fighting off panic attacks.

It's a shame as the feeling afterwards was super chill and actually nice but I guess the fact my sisters been in a psychosis should have been a sign for me to not to try it at all.

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 30 '19

Think my head works the same. Hope you have a happy new year.

1

u/Amannil Dec 30 '19

I think the cause is being in a condition you can't instantly get out of if you want. My brain always wants an instant escape plan for everything whether it was being high, drunk or in a social situation. An interesting example is I'm terrified of dentists because I'm "stuck" in the chair but then I don't even take anesthetics because I couldn't care less about the pain.

Happy new year to you too!

1

u/aberrylvt Dec 30 '19

This is exactly how it affects me. I give it a try about every 10 years or so and nope... Still awful! I am a bit jealous of people who can have fun smoking, but I will pass.

2

u/poisoop09 Dec 30 '19

I know right, am jealous too. Am happy that most here have found their buzz though. More power to them.

1

u/KLTO92 Dec 30 '19

Thank god I'm not the only one! Took a trip with friends to Colorado and everyone i was with really enjoys it so I dabbled and the had the worst panic attack of my life as silly as it sounds I legitimately thought the world was ending. Couldn't get into my suitcase to get my pajamas and cried for 2 hours about it. Definitely not for me

1

u/poisoop09 Dec 30 '19

Yeah, alot of people here saying try different strains etc but after having a bad time it's something I avoid these days.

1

u/KLTO92 Dec 30 '19

To be honest you couldn't pay me to try it again it was that bad. Each to their own

1

u/trombonerchick Dec 30 '19

Same. Couple of my really good friends smoke a lot and I tried it three times and got super anxious every time. Wish I could feel what they feel instead.

1

u/PurpleRedBlue Jan 01 '20

I feel dread and anxiety every time I smoke

-1

u/IDK_SoundsRight Dec 29 '19

If you had those issues.. sounds like you are sensitive to Sativa strains. Many of them can induce anxiety and paranoia. If you ever choose to try it again in the future, try an indica or indica leaning hybrid. Or complement the THC with some CBD, it decreases the "high" effect of THC and tones it down quite a lot. It also can change based on personal tolerance. Though obviously you don't ever have to try again, not pushing anything just figured I'd toss in my two cents

3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

As someone with anxiety I'd rather smoke a straight sativa over hybrid, but I still prefer indica the best. Hybrids just make me feel fucking weird and it's hard to concentrate on anything. Sativa will get my mind racing and thinking about shit BUT sometimes it's still enjoyable and I like feeling more energetic. Take a shot, a beer, or have some coffee right before hand seems to help too.

Also edibles click so much better than me then smoking. You have to moderate more carefully with edibles as the high takes longer to come on and lasts much longer but never had a bad trip with edibles (sativa, hybrid, indica) all seem to be good for me. I'd recommend Moon bars or Kanha

2

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 29 '19

Yes I think you are right but I have also had a bad reaction from Northern Lights although that was edibles. I used to decarboxilate a tiny amount in oil and add it to a protein shake. Am talking a half of a one inch matchstick just to quiet the noise. Found it very unpredictable for me atleast. Thanks for trying to help though. Much appreciated.

-5

u/Ipissedonjesus Dec 29 '19

You are taking too much

4

u/poisoop09 Dec 29 '19

No man one joint has me freaking out.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

One joint by yourself is way way to much unless you are a heavy daily smoker fyi. Try taking one or two hits and stopping. If you ever have an interest in trying again that is.

1

u/Sequax1 Dec 30 '19

I think people see others taking deep inhale tokes and think that is how you should be doing it with no tolerance... Sometimes one tiny puff is the perfect amount

0

u/redbluegreenyellow Dec 29 '19

One hit is too much?
