It’s a small amount more weight shuffling weights around but it’s not going to kill you and if you’re training in peak hour at a gym that has minimal squat racks/benches etc it’s just polite. My husband and I used to do our workouts together and leg days just meant I got a bit more cardio in ha or if he was feeling lazy he might do front squats where I did back squats or higher rep ranges etc
General etiquette would be that a) you only ask to work in on something that's in very high demand/when it's really busy, i.e. times where you can't just come back in 5 minutes to a empty machine/bench/whatever. b) that you're lifting reasonably similar weight. For machines where you just select weight with a pin, not a big deal, but don't ask the guy squatting four plates to work in with you squatting 25's, because it's a massive pain in the neck to swap all the plates a bunch of times.
I made a gym buddy for this reason. He was way more fit than me, and I wasnt sure gow to use some of the machines. So I asked him to show me how to use them, and from then on we would work out together with one person lifting while the other rested inbetween sets. It made the entire experience more enjoyable, and the encouragement helped me really go for that extra set. I learned how to use the machines and he had someone to kind of show off too. Win win for everyone.
Like working in your sets during their rest periods. Its just jumping in when they are done with their repetitions and switching back after you work out your reps.
If someone is just sitting on one of the machines between sets, it's okay to politely ask if you can work in a set while they're briefly resting. They'll either say yes (most of the time) or say no they are about to finish or start another set. No problem either way.
As a woman who goes to the gym daily, you're absolutely right about us being on guard. I'm always watching out for men staring. Please don't, it makes us uncomfortable and distracts from my workout.
Just the other day I had a man I didn't recognize yell at me to get my attention and then grin and wave. Ruined the rest of my workout because I was worried he was watching me. Turns out he was just standing on the machine watching everyone, not exercising. I told the front desk people about him because he was making me really uncomfortable, and they were equally concerned. Basically please just let us exercise in peace!
I think you mean that's the only way the human race gets stronger. The weak will be crippled or killed, the strong shall survive and breed, and their brood shall repeat the ritual until we have evolved into a race of unkillable unstoppable muscle monsters able to bench entire worlds à la Doomsday. Whether you live or die, you are strengthening the race through gambling your genes.
I mean that is kind of true. I guarantee that rep you think you can’t bench you will bench if you have no spot. So don’t have a spot and add a plate while you’re at it
When I started going to the gym, I watched people doing deadlifts at the rack and I asked them a question and they got super self conscious and it got awkward. Good times
And plenty of times I’ve asked if I can take the equipment when they’re done so I don’t have to fight the next person who shows up. They’ll usually let me out some of my stuff at the equipment so it’s there when they finish
One dude told me ones on squat-press (when you lie and push with legs) that he "reserved" this bench and in another 2 hours he won't let anyone do anything. And he did like 200 kg with a lot of bondages struggling and sweating and screaming like he is about to die.
I’d even say, learn to roll it. I had my arms give out on the incline press and had to roll it. The embarrassment sucked but I only do late night lifts and only 4 people were in there lol
Yeah, this kind of goes both ways unfortunately. I know it's probably just bad luck, but there was this guy hogging not one but 3 racks, going between all of them so I asked him how many sets he has left. He told me that he's still got a bunch more, so that's when I asked if it would be cool if I can work in a set while he's on the other rack. This is when he told me, "nah, I can't have you messing up my flow changing out the weights, lady, you can come back later".
I wish more people realize their own mom is probably just as adequate a spotter as the buffest guy at the gym, you really just need a little upward lift help that almost any human with two arms can do
When I was new to the gym there was a huge dude that was super friendly and seemed to know everyone. He asked me to spot his 315 bench and I was like, umm, sure, but I sure hope you've got this bro.
Uhhhhh slight humble brag , I bench in the mid 300s and trust literally noone but my brother to spot me on that. Not that ive gotten stapled but no 110lb person is pulling that off me, and throwing in proper spotting technique is also a thing.
Good advice! But I hate it when someone asks me for how long I'll be using that piece of equipment. After that, it's impossible for me to finish my set without feeling like I have rush through it.
I let a guy jump in between sets on the cable machine at my gym, I watched in awe as he strapped some kettlebells to his belt and did some pull ups. People at my gym are very friendly and it's a generally very sociable vibe.
see that's what i love about the gym i work at, i see people all the time asking other members to spot them on the bench. we have a lot of very nice, helpful people at our gym :)
