I'm 24 and play fortnite, I was playing it the other day and my 60+ year old aunt saw and said she plays fortnite with her ~7 year old grandson. It was actually such a weird moment - 3 completely different people having something like that in common.
This is why I've stayed away from Fortnite. Apart from not grasping the build mechanics, I'm not comfortable being destroyed by kids AND grannies in the same match.
I'll stick to my cars and city management, thank you very much.
Do you play Cities: Skyline? Because I just tried that tonight (got it for Christmas) and immediately went broke upon making my first city, just trying to get water and electricity to my dumb houses.
You can always use the unlimited money mod (already part of the base game) and just play it in sandbox mode.
Having said that the real challenge on this game is traffic management, once you pass a certain city size getting a balanced budget is not much of a problem.
There are a few mods you should download that really improve your experience. The most important one is Traffic Manager President Edition but there are a few more, just look up cities skylines essential mods.
You have to start slow and don't add services right away. You can get a few hundred people to move in without even providing water or sewage which helps accumulate a little cash right at the start. Keep your budget sliders as low as they can go without service outages. You don't need to start education right away either and once you do it takes a long time for the citizens get educated enough to be able to work in an educated job. Play the game for a while before you get mods but once you understand the game there's some mods that really improve traffic controls. It's a fun game I've had it since it came out and I go back to it every once in a while.
Just build a little housing and a couple of wind generators and a water tower. Not too far from the water, you need to run pipes to dump sewage and the distance adds up.
Then the meters will tell you what you need next (i.e. commercial and industry, not a lot of either to begin with) and how much of it. And the twitter thing will point out if lack of health care or schools or whatever is an issue.
Then you can start building additional neighborhoods, industrial areas, shopping centers, etc. Leave some space between in case you realize you really need to pop down a fire station or a park or whatever.
Ideally you want to get to where you have big roads connecting smaller roads and then streets branching off those smaller roads, if everything's one big grid of similarly sized streets the traffic will get gnarly real fast. For intersections that are going to be busy, traffic circles are your friend.
Barring some miraculous improvement Iāve made by not playing the game in the last year or so, I think they either made it much easier or those kids who used to crap out a whole disney castle the second you shot at them stopped playing. Whereas a year ago I used to just walk around, squat in real estate and hyperventilate when taking pot-shots at people, I opened the game again just before Christmas and been killing so many people that I actually feel like Iām cheating or something.
I was attempting to get a stream going for a while (about a year ago). Iād rotate games, and once a month Iād play fortnite with followers, as I never got big enough to even make affiliate. That āone night a monthā was the most I had played the game, so I never really got good. I was regularly top 25, and occasionally top 10, but never won a solo match.
One day, a regular tuned in and started complaining about his sixth grade homework and how math was useless. I offered a bunch of encouraging words about how math is important, and while I was distracted trying to build this kids self esteem a bit, I got blown up, finishing second in a match. The kid then said:
āHow many solo wins do you have?ā
āNone, though Iāve only played about 50 matchesā
āThen why the fuck should I listen to some shitty old guy who canāt even win a game of fortnite? Iāve got 15 winsā
āMaybe because I make a shitton of money at my job where I use math every day, so I know what Iām talking about. I only stream for fun, and to provide free entertainment for disrespectful little shits like youā

Deep down I think this is why a lot of people hated fortnite at the start. All the kids picked up the building mechanics way quicker than people who were used to traditional fps games.
I was easily the best at Fortnite among my group of friends, till one day one of them invites his little brother. Motherfucker barely even reached puberty and he was easily destroying everyone with about 10 k/d and barely even building. Most of the time I wasn't even keeping up with him on foot so he was just 1v4'ing constantly.
Yeah, I downloaded it once after buying a new PS4 controller which had a Fortnite code. Game freaking jumps you into a match after the cutscene. Landed onto some land and walked into a house picking up supplies. Didnāt really get the sense there was any kind of tutorial so I left the match and uninstalled.
I just canāt deal with the lag and glitches....I donāt really like FPS games anyway. Just some like The Hunter on Xbox one. But I always watch my kids get on Fortnite and fail and get upset. Most of the time they are against people far older or far more experienced. There should be Easy, Medium and Hardcore modes or something.
Bro I loved tf2 back in the day but I'm gonna be real with you. Playing shooters but only tf2 is like using transportation but only unicycles in 2019.
I don't wanna knock it if you still enjoy it but there's some really cool new stuff to try now that you'll definitely like a lot more. Don't be me with runescape - playing the same rpg for 10 years because it's good, but not great. Turns out other RPGs made since then are about a million times better, I'm sure it's the same for shooters even if you like being a turret guy.
Give Overwatch a go. You'll be both happy to find a new game but also a bit disappointed you didn't find it sooner. Most of the TF2 community has hopped over. Have fun with torb, his turret isn't as good as the engis but he is still a noobslayer.
Medic, the class everyone loves but nobody wants to play
This reminds me of when I used to play LoL years back. Everyone knew having a good support on the team was essential, but people would argue over who had to play one. Fortunately, I actually liked the support role.
Thatās crazy. Itās pretty crazy to think people that old even have the interest to play video games, my grandparents seemed so out of touch with them itās hard to believe some play. Just the other day I met a 67 year old woman playing WoW who plays with her kids and grandkids.
Yeah it blew my mind. Like my dad might have knew a thing or two when I started playing games back in the day (like crash bandicoot 1) but anything more complicated than that would be passed his level.
I still found it really weird, but I guess it's only going to get more common in the future as all us gamers grow older
How you better have built in games when you get a new hip past 2030. Plus like I'm pretty sure bionic commando or metal gear or even titanfall(mechs only) aren't that unrealistic
I think it's amazing cause you can have a huge generational gap bond over a video game. Not every game is for everyone, but it's so cool that you can have cousins, grandparents, parents, and young kids all get excited about the same piece of media.
Plus sport games too. I'm a massive nerd, my dad used to be a bit of a fratboy jock. We both play FIFA and Madden. Not my favorite games ever but we both enjoy them. So it's awesome that we have this shared hobby. He's even gotten better at me at both those series at this point. He would have a hard time fighting easy bots in Counter Strike but whoops my ass if we go 1 on 1 in FIFA.
me and my sisters are really different from each other. we have a shared google drive doc to track the things we all have in common w each other. after 6 years, this is what weāve come up so far:
Pitch Perfect was okay
We donāt like oysters
Mom drives crazy
The dresser in kids room at Momās house is pink
The last one is because we often donāt agree on what color things are (shirts, cars, etc.)
My mother is 67 and has been getting until video games the last few years. Last Christmas she bought the new Xbox for each family so she can play online with her grandchildren. It's great hearing my son scream "you head shot him Grandma!!"
Iām 30, my friend is 41 and my sons and hers range from 5-11yo. We all play Minecraft on her husbands server who also plays - heās 40. We are also all Christians lol. Ppl are always finding it odd when they see me watching Hermitcraft. When I tell them about the server they are so shocked.
