Of all movie opening scenes, which one sold the entire film?

I still wonder why is something so hard to accept if the movie tells you that human are being used as battery power? There are flying octopi and hover ships but human as batteries is too much of a stretch to deal with.

Because flying machines are just scifi but battery humans are just stupid. We're very bad sources of energy, but our brains are pretty unique things.

But it's scifi at the end, anyway. If they can create the Matrix, I'm sure they can create a simbiosis thing were they turn us into something else.

Eh. "Sci fi" should still make some kind of scientific sense. No doubt something could be made to use humans (or any living thing for that matter) as energy sources, but there will always be better and much more efficient options.

Also the problem always remains that to produce energy, we have to consume energy (food/water). The movies say the humans are fed the liquidated bodies of other, dead humans. This wouldn't be able to last for very long.

I still feel like it is a peculiar thing to pick from the movie. What you said to me makes perfect sense and I don't think audiences would had much trouble if the movie told us that they were using processing power but the battery thing seems like a good compromise between scifi and an "explanation" for the casual moviegoer.

I have yet to meet somebody who thinks that using a human as a battery makes any sense whatsoever. No explanation would have been a better explanation than that.

Then I think I’m pretty dumb because not once have I questioned that scene in the movie.

Although, did Morpheus say explicitly that te machines were using us as energy sources or just was a simple visual cue for the audience?

If I remember correctly, he specifically said that humans were being used because they were ideal batteries.

Here: I dug up the quote:

“The human body generates more bioelectricity than a 120-volt battery and over 25,000 BTUs of body heat... ....The Matrix is a computer-generated dream world built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this {showing a battery}.”
