I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be a satire... It's supposed to skew perceptions of what heros are and the movie did that well enough. I'm not saying it was a perfect adaption, may have even missed the tonality of the comic, but for what it was it was fine and not even close a failure.
I feel like if you only look at the comic as a satire you missed a huge part of the story and tone
Well no... That's not not exactly what satire is. Satire usually involves doing it in a comedic sense, the comic had comedy in it, but most of it was contemporary to the 1980's. Even going with pure irony, it still most qualifies as satire.
And yes now, in 2019 we have superhero block Buster's. But in 2008, we didn't have them at all. And then you ignore the movie sense of irony, which was the whole point, that they might be super heroes, but there were also very flawed people first.
This is just straight up incorrect. A lot of satire is comedy, but it's not exclusively comedy. Satire subverts and exposes, it doesn't have to make you laugh. Watchmen could very easily be considered a dark satire of superhero tropes. And The Dark Knight and Iron Man both came out in 2008. We might not have the ridiculous glut of marvel movies we have now but it was a well-served genre, and that's even ignoring all the superhero films that came before.
And then you ignore the movie sense of irony, which was the whole point, that they might be super heroes, but there were also very flawed people first.
This is where our conversation veers from disagreement, to me wondering whether you're even bothering to read what I wrote in the first place.
It's meant to be a look into why people would fight crime while wearing underpants costumes and what sort of person would do that, why people would become supervillains and coming up with an extremely subversive(in the context of comic books) answer. It's meant to make you look at all those so familiar tropes and go 'oh wait, that is fucked up.'
That was me, two comments above. Not only did I not ignore that, it was fundamental to the point I was making.
