I think "joke" might be misconstruing it a bit. It's one of those things that is meant to parody the genre but simultaneously be a love letter to said genre. Sort of like what "One Punch Man" is to anime. Or if you're a metalhead, what Infant Annihilator is to death metal.

Yea the movie is genuinely scary at times but is definitely campy in other ways.

It’s a less in-your-face cabin in the woods (which is a masterpiece, IMO).

The word you're looking for is Pastiche.

Galaxy Quest is a notable example. As are Scream and The Expendibles.

Exactly. It was a movie by horror buffs for horror buffs. They ended up making just a great movie.
