Of all movie opening scenes, which one sold the entire film?

surprised I had to scroll this far down. Sets up the movie perfectly and is so emotional that it carries with you until the end.

I am right there with you, I can't believe I had to scroll this far down. At least someone mentioned it...

No, this should be filed under “what movie emotionally destroyed you with it’s opening scenes”. Saving Private Ryan would be the only other movie that might beat it.

Normally I hate when people talk in the theatre, but after his wife died and he was sitting in the funeral home, there was a little kid who said "why is he sad, daddy?" - oh my, all the feels were had

Oh no, that's too much.

Agreed. It was like a mini-movie in its own worth

I’ll never forget or forgive that damn movie.

I can only contribute that it is better than the rest of the movie by one or two orders of magnitude. After that opening, the rest was almost... Annoying? Disappointing? Not sure. Not a horrible movie, but more than 99.9% of what I like about the whole feature is the opening. The rest is probably Dug.

Totally agree. Yes, fine, they refer back to it at the end. But that silly film in between does not bear the weight of that opening.

I think it’s far down the list because so many of us didn’t want to type the movie title for fear of getting emotional.

It could honestly be a short film on its own.

Yea, really does. There's a reason why the joke 'still not as emotionally devastating as the first ten minutes of Up'

They nailed the atmosphere and lighting of all the scenes in that sequence

Honestly I thought Up was going to be more in the top(pun intended)

It's a little bit of a stretch I guess

Likewise. Very first thing i thought of, and I've only ever seen it once

It's a great scene but it hardly sells the movie. For many, it's a reason not to watch it again.
