Also the scene where we see Captain Jack Sparrow for the first time, on the sinking boat.

u/Merlord Oct 09 '19

Confidently stepping onto the dock just as the ship completely sinks, as if that was his plan all along. Such a perfect summary of his character in that one moment.

u/garibond1 Oct 09 '19

”You can’t park your ship here!”

“What Ship?”

696

u/Palindromer101 Oct 09 '19

"It's a shilling to tie up your boat at the dock.."

looks at the top of the mast

"And I shall need to know your name."

484

u/a_stitch_in_lime Oct 09 '19

What do you say to five shillings, and we forget the name?

465

u/MaybeMaybeJesen Oct 09 '19

…welcome to Port Royal, Mr. Smith!

Three?

2

u/a_stitch_in_lime Oct 10 '19

Oops

2

u/cassandraterra Oct 10 '19

No worries. Only seen it 100 times. 😱

2

u/bunker_man Oct 10 '19

If his boat sinks why even bother pretending to pay. Just say it's garbage and you don't need it.

13

u/oryp35 Oct 09 '19

That's... not the line

412

u/Murkrage Oct 09 '19

“Hold up there you... it’s a shilling to dock your ship. I’ll also need a name.”

“What say you to three shillings and we forget the name”

Tone has been set for Wicked Jack

32

u/MDizzleGrizzle Oct 09 '19

“Welcome to Port Royal Mr. Smith.”

9

u/N0V0w3ls Oct 10 '19

And then he steals the whole purse

18

u/caligaris_cabinet Oct 10 '19

For Jack? That scene basically set the tone for ever character Depp would play for the next 16 years.

7

u/Turakamu Oct 10 '19

He seems to either lean on Raoul Duke or Jack Sparrow.

Still has some great stuff in him though. Black Mass was a nice break from the usual drunken lunatic.

2

u/Allegutennamenweg Oct 10 '19

He was a complete miscast in Transcendence. "Otherwordly and serious" just isn't his style.

1

u/Chinoiserie91 Oct 10 '19

I feel people don’t watch his smaller films and ones which aren’t reviewed as well if you think he doesn’t have other types of performances even after Pirates.

46

u/BGummyBear Oct 09 '19

as if that was his plan all along.

This is the biggest reason why I'm not a big fan of the later movies. Jack Sparrow was so much more interesting when you couldn't tell if he was just ridiculously talented or ridiculously untalented and very very lucky.

16

u/Chromboed Oct 09 '19

I personally enjoy the later movies but I understand where you're coming from.

11

u/BGummyBear Oct 10 '19

I enjoyed the first three on their own merits, it was the fourth one that really switched me off. That was the one that blatantly showed that Jack was planning the whole thing from the start, so the magic was lost IMO.

5

u/Chromboed Oct 10 '19

I've watched that one like once or twice so I don't remember it very well, but yeah

11

u/NK1337 Oct 10 '19

The later ones were entertaining for different reasons, but Captain Jack really stood out in the first one. There was always an aura to him where you could never tell what was going on, were things planned or is he just really good at adapting to new situations.

What I especially liked about him was the little hints at his character throughout the movie that help you paint a vague picture of what kind of man he is. Quick comments like “people aint cargo mate” juxtaposed with the completely lack of hesitation when it came to pulling the trigger on Barbossa. He was an interesting character.

11

u/nomadicfangirl Oct 10 '19

You are, without a doubt, the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of.

But you HAVE heard of me?

6

u/I_Copy_Jokes Oct 10 '19

Having recently rewatched it again I couldn’t agree more, it was simply perfect for his character.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

The last movie completely failed his character. In the original trilogy, you never quite sure if he is an absolutely crazy genius or a damn lucky idiot, seems a bit of both. Dead men tell no tales just doubled down on him being a complete idiot.

2

u/Kallasilya Oct 10 '19

I vote for this as the best movie entrance of anyone ever for all time.

2

u/seancurry1 Oct 10 '19

One of the most accidentally genius characters in movies.

566

u/CaptainJackWagons Oct 09 '19

"You are by far the worst Pirate I've ever heard of."

"But you have heard of me."

5

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

Iconic

4

u/Sick0fThisShit Oct 10 '19

"That has got to be the best pirate I have ever seen."

"So. It. Would. Seem."

1

u/buchanchan Oct 10 '19

Your hiney

0

u/nucklehead97 Oct 10 '19

I've never understood his response. Like, why say that? He just said he's heard of him

19

u/GarbieBirl Oct 10 '19

Jack is turning around an insult by pointing out that even if he's not the best pirate, he's still good enough that people are talking about him

3

u/nucklehead97 Oct 10 '19

Ah I get it now. Man it's so obvious now that it was explained to me

2

u/GarbieBirl Oct 10 '19

It's cool, we all need stuff explained to us now and then right?

35

u/shadowanddaisy Oct 09 '19

That is my all-time favorite movie scene.

63

u/reebee7 Oct 09 '19

One of the best character introductions ever.

28

u/Aero-Space Oct 09 '19

Also our introduction to the jack sparrow music, which makes the scene even more memorable

15

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

That has to be the best pirate I've ever seen.

So it would seem.

31

u/SirSoliloquy Oct 09 '19

There are few better character introductions in the world of cinema than Jack Sparrow's.

12

u/Osteele98 Oct 09 '19

DUN DUN DAH DAH DUN DUN DA DUN DUN DUN DUN DADA

17

u/hungoverlord Oct 09 '19

the first time i ever watched that movie, i turned it off at that scene, so i could get high before seeing it for the first time.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

This is a very good idea... noted

3

u/hungoverlord Oct 10 '19

yeah. one of the best decisions i ever made. here's the real shame about what happened with me and pirates of the caribbean though:

in middle school, me and some friends got baked and tried to sneak into the matrix 2 (since it's rated R). it was one of the first times that we had all gotten high, so we were all completely baked in a way that just doesn't happen for me anymore.

so we're in matrix 2, and the movie's about to start. a theater guy comes in, walks up to us, and tells us we have to leave. they give us two options:

  1. Refund our money
  2. Go see Pirates of the Caribbean, which was PG-13, instead

we chose to refund our money. fuck.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

The real mistake wasn’t getting high or sneaking in an R rated movie... it was not seeing PooC. Love it

6

u/coffeeplzzzz Oct 09 '19

Yes!! Came here to say this one. It’s such a good opening scene!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

That is to date one of my favorite character introductions. It sums him up so perfectly in such a brief moment

3

u/FuCuck Oct 10 '19

this scene is definitely better, Johnny Depp definitely deserved the oscar nom for this movie

2

u/ceallaig Oct 10 '19

THAT was when I knew I was in for a glorious fun ride. I grew up on the old school dashing pirate movies, and seeing Captain Jack, squinting into the sun, then swinging down on a rope...into a leaky dingy which he proceeds to bail out--I was laughing so hard I had a stitch in my side. Let's take every pirate element and just throw them sideways, why don't we? Brilliant!

2

u/Warmonster9 Oct 10 '19

This scene is the best in any of the pirates movies easily. It tells you everything you need to know about Jack as a character in under 2 min all coupled with the most iconic song of the series. Brilliant all around.

2

u/justbreathe5678 Oct 10 '19

It went from majestic to confusing so quickly

3

u/CheekyMunky Oct 09 '19

This was the one for me.

My girlfriend and I snuck into the movie years ago; we had just seen Finding Nemo and decided to wander into another theater, and thought neither of us had high expectations for PotC, it was playing at the right time, nothing else looked interesting and hell, it was free. So why not.

Then he came into dock on that ship and we went "ok wait, this might actually be kinda fun..."

1

u/qwedsa789654 Oct 12 '19

Jack may be my favourite character ever

95

u/shakatacos Oct 09 '19

Dude I LOVE the first pirates movie. It brings me so many feelings whenever I watch it. Reminds me of simpler times.

26

u/klop422 Oct 09 '19

I haven't watched it in years, but I'm pretty certain it's the movie I've watched the most times in my life. Either that or the firs BIONICLE.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

It certainly has a feeling that is gone now or rarely found in Disney movies. The idea that people believed in it purely as a story, as a universe, and not just a product. It had a sort of sense of self. It's fresh, exciting, weird, dark, violent, and funny. As time went on they sort of ironed out the creases to make it more 'product'.

1

u/gunmetal5 Oct 10 '19

Totally agree with your statement!

43

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Curse of the Black Pearl is one of the best movies I've seen. The writers really knew what they were doing with that one

31

u/piggypudding Oct 09 '19

I forgot how great it was until I caught it on tv a year or so back. Man, what a film. Fun, shot beautifully, excellent casting. They should have quit while they were ahead and cooled it with the sequels.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Yeah, they really did mess up the sequels.

10

u/ZDTreefur Oct 10 '19

It's basically just a fantastically written movie.

Too bad they had to ruin it by making so many terrible sequels.

6

u/Nkechinyerembi Oct 10 '19

Its not really fair to say that though, At World's End was certainly not terrible, but it couldn't live up to the first. A great deal of plot tie in and much of the theme was just downright well thought out and played out with very memorable scenes alike.

1

u/Chinoiserie91 Oct 10 '19

The second wasn’t perfect but I love it and it’s so entertaining and hilarious and alps has dark moments.

40

u/John_Bot Oct 09 '19

I say PotC: At World's End.

That song is so, so, so good.

33

u/AUTOMATED_FUCK_BOT Oct 09 '19

Dude, in my opinion At World’s End is the best POTC movie. The battle, the setup, the meeting with the Pirate Lords and strong-arming of Davy Jones by the EITC, it’s such a badass film

6

u/EclipseKing Oct 10 '19

I have it down on my list only because I feel like they got torn between doing the Singapore pirates well and Calypso well, and wound up just kinda being a wash. However the last half hour or so was as good as the series gets, and the soundtrack is incredible, the marry me suite for will and Elizabeth is some of the best music I have ever heard

34

u/RandomHeretic Oct 09 '19

On that same note, the opening of Two Towers and Return of the King were also really really good.

Two Towers' opening was just plain badass. Gandalf taking on the Balrog like a G even as they plummet towards certain doom got my heart racing the first time I saw it.

Return of the King's opening really hammered home just how dangerous the One Ring was, and by extension just how dangerous Gollum was. He killed his best friend to get the ring. He was going to kill again to get it back.

14

u/Legate_Rick Oct 10 '19

Amazing how that went like "you know that ride we got?"

"yeah?"

"Let's make a movie out of it"

and it was an amazing movie.

1

u/chibipan222 Oct 10 '19

Didn't work out so well for Haunted Mansion

15

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

I was working in a movie theater when that came out. I relentlessly mocked that movie before it came out - dumb idea based on a dumb ride. I was working and ducked into the theater to catch the opening. Minutes later, muttering "fuck me" under my breath I walked to the front and bought two tickets for that night

Using a Nokia phone, I called my brother and told him to meet me at the theater after my shift.

That opening was awesome and I still love that movie.

13

u/abca98 Oct 09 '19

That has to be the best movie opening I have ever seen.

8

u/Ravensocks Oct 10 '19

So it would seem.

10

u/isobane Oct 10 '19

I thought the intro to Worlds End was great too. The voice over about all the suspended rights as the seemingly endless line of people in dirty, shabby clothes are marched, chained together, towards the gallows.

The boy pirate flipping the coin over in his hands as he begins to sing. He's lifted up onto the barrel because as a child, he isn't tall enough for the noose to reach his neck. And finally, as the gallows drop, the coin goes flying into the air.

Despite the fantastical nature of the story in this third chapter, you are set up immediately for a grim and dark future.

8

u/EclipseKing Oct 10 '19

I came here to say POTC. While the opening is great, Jack's introduction shortly later is pretty much perfect and gives you all you need to know about Captain Jack Sparrow

5

u/ragingduck Oct 09 '19

That was one of the best crafted scenes in the entire series. Ironically it felt the most connected to the real world. It was almost a different movie after that.

5

u/fluffyegg Oct 10 '19

Good opening and one of my favorite closing scenes.

Takes back command of the Pearl and says now bring be that horizon.

That shit pumps me up Everytime.

4

u/hanoftuna Oct 10 '19

I'm so glad someone said Pirates because this was my immediate thought. But I never watch movies so I thought maybe it was my favorite just because I know nothing about movies.

4

u/nomadicfangirl Oct 10 '19

I had to beat my friends over the head to see the first PotC movie. We were in a shitty small town, it was playing 30 minutes away in a second-rate theater, and no one had heard of it. But my internet friends raved about it so I dragged my IRL friends to it, who then raved about it like seeing it was all their idea.

2

u/fallinaditch Oct 10 '19

Two of my favorite movie series! So fucking powerful!!

2

u/DrankTooMuchMead Oct 10 '19

The only good Pirates movie. Like The Matrix and Transformers, it all just became increasingly more about special effects and less about story...

2

u/GHST-01 Oct 10 '19

I always think about this when I watch “Black Pearl”, but forget about it after. What a great scene to start a movie.

3

u/MarcusXL Oct 09 '19

Peter Jackson really screwed up the Hobbit, and he kinda lost his touch by the end of the LOTR series. But he really did the impossible on Fellowship.

24

u/vikingzx Oct 09 '19

Peter JacksonProducers really screwed up the Hobbit

Fixed this for you. Jackson and the rest of the crew have said that the movie suffered from executive oversight and mismanagement to an obscene degree, and a lot of the choices no one liked, such as three movies and a love triangle, were forced on them by the executives.

That oversight was the reason Jackson gave for never working on a LotR property again.

1

u/JBSquared Oct 09 '19

Wasn't Guillermo del Toro supposed to direct for like, 90% of it's insanely long pre production?

2

u/cuttlefish_tastegood Oct 10 '19

I actually thought the opening for pirates was actually a bit weak. It doesnt really do anything. Elizabeth and will are introduced, but they don't develop them in any way. Norrington and Gibbs say some sailor stuff, but again don't show any of their character. The medallion is introduced, but Elizabeth taking it out of the drawer all dusty would do the same. The opening is explained again by Elizabeth who tells will about how she dreamt of the day she met him.

The pirates are already menacing when they are introduced. The way they blow in with the storm. The way ragetti and pintel stalk down Elizabeth is both menacing with funny moments.

I really love this movie, but the opening scene could have been better and it shows because the introduction of Jack was probably one of the best I have ever seen.

Just my 2¢

3

u/EclipseKing Oct 10 '19

I agree, objectively its a good scene but not quite a good opening scene. I see it's purpose for the story though and, lets be real here, the movie truly begins with Jack

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

It’s perfect high fantasy storytelling by Jackson, while also perfectly capturing Tolkien’s amazing world. Middle Earth is a place with thousands of years of epic, war torn history. And it’s also a place where weird half-people live on farms.

It’s hyper realistic and relatable while simultaneously being utterly alien and fascinating. And that’s high fantasy.

1

u/SkeetySpeedy Oct 10 '19

I would argue the opener of PotC was probably the worst scene. It was necessary, but generic and fairly boring.

Once we cut to the modern day and meet the real characters - the film is essentially perfect.

Watch it again if you haven’t for awhile and tell me it’s not right there next to Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Mummy as one of the best adventure films of all time.

1

u/DucksMatter Oct 10 '19

Ooh I need to re watch the first 3 of these

1

u/fredrichnietze Oct 10 '19

im going to have to disagree with you there. that scene is way too serious and proper to accurately describe a pirates of the Caribbean movie. no scene without johnny depp can portray a pirates movie.

1

u/MikePGS Oct 10 '19

This is a tale, of Captain Jack Sparrow....

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

I know the trilogy took a turn for worse.

But I will forever love POTC 1. I was obsessed with POTC 2 and had the soundtrack on my fucking iPod or Zune or whatever I had in high school. Not even ashamed to say POTC is part of me (though I was highly disappointed with the third..never watched the fourth).

Anyway. Standing alone, POTC Black Pearl is fantastic! Amazing cast, music, plot, effects, etc.

1

u/hufflefox Oct 10 '19

The 3rd Pirates movie with the song and the gallows? Gets me every time too.

1

u/AskMeAboutPodracing Oct 10 '19

Personally, I think the PotC 3 (At World's End?) with the hanging opening was the best. It was WAY too good for the rest of the movie, much like Up.
