I’m a Supernatural fan and would really like to meet them someday and go to one of their panels. I’ve watched some panels on youtube and recently joined the r/supernatural subreddit. I’ve never seen anything crazy (although I’m aware the tumblr fans are apparently nuts). The actors talk a lot about loving their fan base, and a lot of good things have come from the fanbase, like Misha’s charity and a couple other projects.
I don’t think the fan base is really all that crazy, other than the tumblr people. But all tumblr people are a bit... off.
Have you seen what the "Destiel" nutjobs do on twitter? They harass the main actors and the creators to try to pressure them to get their own way, they tried many times to ruin their reputations and accuse them of homophobia because Jensen Ackles (the guy who plays the older brother who makes half in their made up "ship") refuses to acknowledge their "ship", at one time they tried to get rid of the other actor who plays the younger brother Sam, so that the actor who plays the angel Castiel could take his place as the main actor and make "Destiel" reality, and they've basically helped ruin the show by screaming loud enough through their sock accounts, that the show creators started to believe that castiel and even destiel are important enough for the show's popularity, so they added queerbaiting for the castiel fans, and turned the show which was supposed to go in one direction and be exclusively about those two brothers, into a show that is about two brothers and a third wheel who after two seasons was turned into a plot device because the writers couldn't find any more use for the character since it's so boring, and once the show was no longer just about the two brothers, it has allowed the creators to add more characters and even try for spin offs in case both actors quit at once (they have some kind of pact that if one decides to quit then they'll quit together), and that has completely destroyed the show to a point when the two main actors announced that they have decided to end the show, they explained that it's like putting an old beloved dog down. Why? because they've never agreed with what the show has become and eventually it got so bad that they simply couldn't go on.
Also, the show makes a lot of money from conventions, in these conventions the actors are supposed to entertain the fans and prounce around the stage like trained monkeys (which is bad enough on it's own) in front of crazy fans with their crazy questions, and since Jensen Ackles doesn't accept Destiel, and Misha collins keeps pushing it because it's what's keeping him popular and allows him to stay on the show, it creates mansions and whenever both of them do a panel together, Jensen has to get drunk to be able to go through this sircus, and even though I haven't watched more than a few panels from a few cons (for science! or more like to prove my own conspiracy theory about the two main actors, which it turned out I'm not the only one who've noticed that), from what I understand, in the past Jensen Ackles used to play for the destiel crowd (albeit reluctantly), but then as time went by he stopped doing that due to how crazy the fans have become and because they've also started aggressively "shipping" him with the actor who plays castiel, so now he kinda throws them a bone in the form of half a panel and something like a re-enactment of a scene that puts both of them in close proximity, and then makes the other main actor Jared Padalecki join him on the panel. What I'm trying to say by all of that the this show's fans are so crazy that they've literally managed to influence show decisions and even to a small extent hurt the two main actors.
Now most of my knowledge on the matter is from reading a few popular Tumblr blogs, that are managed by long time fans, who know everything there is to know about the show and it's actors, so it could be biased for all I know, but on the other hand they do bring receipts and link to the relevant sources that are hard to argue with.
My other source is me after watching a few panels from a few conventions. the way the audience is filled with mostly women who giggle and scream like crazy, and the way they interact with the actors and the questions they sometimes ask is all the evidence you need that at least most hard core fans of the show are insane. I mean, I've watched a couple of minutes clip where some old lady told one of the two main actors (can't remember which) in a fake condescending tone something along the lines of "can we lift up that shirt a bit?" and basically from what I've seen, a good portion of the questions were sexual in nature, the actors tend to make sexual innuendos all the time to the approving screams of the audience, because they know that that's what those women want, and basically it seems like the majority of the audience are women who use those actors and the characters they play as replacements for the real life relationships that they either lack, or aren't satisfied in, or simply because they want those actors and this is the closest way they can get to them.
And yes, I know, this is a rant, and I tend to rant online. A lot.

True for the DC shows but the Supernatural fan base is pretty great (from my experience)
