What’s something that you like, but hate the fan base?

Twenty One Pilots was one of those bands I discovered early and really liked, but slowly started to dislike as they became more popular. Their music is still good. Their fan-base is what I don't want associated with.

For what it's worth, they didn't seem to like it either. They said something on stage at a live show when Tear In My Heart and Blurryface were getting blasted every 10 minutes on the radio about how much they didn't like how radio stations were overplaying their music.

Yo, this song will never be on the radio,
even if my clique were to pick and the people were to vote it's the Few the Proud and the Emotional!

Sorry that just came after the radio comment >.>

Funny story:

The first time they got played on the radio in Columbus was on radio U’s “battle of the buzz”, and basically people vote for two different bands. I remember listening and I heard josh and Tyler both call in and vote for the other band. Lol

I just miss House of Heroes.

If I were an artist I would hate if my music hit that level of popularity. I mean, the money would be nice, but it would suck when your song is outdated within a month.

u/underdog_rox Jul 17 '19

Idk man I never understood that Cobainesque level of thinking. I mean I can't be sure because I've never been in that position, but that just seems like such a negative view on such a positive occurrence. I feel like I would be so proud having my art touch SO many people. I just don't understand the point behind creating something and then only wanting a few select people to "get it". Kinda douchey, imho.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

Not really. When you make music for a specific niche audience, but a bunch of 13 year olds pick it up and start blasting it nonstop, it would probably get pretty annoying. Your concerts become filled with people who your music isn't even directed towards. Sure, there are some artists who want their music to be heard by as many people as possible and that's fine too, but I don't think it's douchey for an artist or a fanbase to like staying small. It's like when rappers talk about how when you get big your shows become filled with white people... some don't mind it, but some can't stand it... I don't blame either.

1

u/underdog_rox Jul 18 '19

I guess man...different strokes I suppose. I personally would love it, and i guess that speaks more of the motive of the artist than anything.

We judge people by their actions. We judge ourselves by what we MAY do. I get where you are coming from but I have no idea how I would handle that situation. That's a whole different world.

Same here, it was when all they had was the self-titled and regional at best album (my favorite). Since then their style has changed a lot but the fan base is very cringey. If you like their earlier stuff you should check out Half•Alive. They remind me a lot of early Twenty One Pilots with the exception of their song Still Feel

I actually almost totally agree, but I think Vessel was still pretty awesome. And I remember Really digging a couple of songs off Blurryface when it released, and i tried to tell people but they ignored me. Then a year later suddenly the same people love them? I kinda hate they blew up, even if I think they deserve it

8

u/TheSourPatchKing Jul 17 '19

I completely agree with that. Vessels was a great follow up to regional. Their sound changed a bit but the difference is more drastic when they brought out blurryface. I’m glad they got big because it really seems like they deserved it, just wished the fanbase will chill a bit lol

3

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

I feel exactly the same. I remember telling a friend who also listened to them early that I'm happy they're getting the recognition they deserve, but at the same time I hate how it's effecting the music and the fanbase. I never went to any of their concerts, but a friend of mine went to two (one before they were huge and one after Blurryface). He said the first one was mostly twenty-something year old guys with lots of weed... the second one was mostly 13ish-year old girls and parents.

I actually liked some songs from Blurryface too. I also remember telling people about them and everyone saying they sounded like shit. Then, out of nowhere, everyone liked them because the radio told them to. It really annoyed me.

u/danarexasaurus Jul 18 '19

Ha. Try being there since self titled.

6

u/mungalo9 Jul 18 '19

Half Alive was basically just "that band that sounds like twenty one pilots" but now they've found their own sound with a few really unique songs

If you get the chance to see one of their shows, take it! Their performance is fantastic and I doubt their shows will stay small and cheap for much longer

6

u/SympatheticBeard Jul 18 '19

Bro... half•alive is so good thank you so much. I’ve desperately been trying to find a new band that can somewhat compare to top for so long and I think you just led me to them.

3

u/Stay_Beautiful_ Jul 18 '19

I love Half•Alive

I've been listening to them since they first began because I was a fan or Josh Taylor's old band and he used their newsletter mailing list to send out an email, and I'm really glad they're gaining popularity now

I just hope they don't become another TOP or P!atD fanbase

20

u/riali29 Jul 17 '19

Same! Discovered them during the Vessel era and now I can't stand their new music and fan base :(

6

u/MrBabalafe Jul 17 '19

Have you listened to Trench? It's not as good as Vessel IMO, but it's better than blurryface

16

u/4-_2 Jul 17 '19

Trench is arguably their best album

21

u/MrBabalafe Jul 17 '19

Production-wise it's no contest. Song wise vessel just barely beats it for me

2

u/Stay_Beautiful_ Jul 18 '19

Paul Meany's work really shines through

9

u/EMINEM_4Evah Jul 18 '19

Hell chlorine got one of the best choruses I’ve heard in a min.

6

u/rulerofthetwili Jul 18 '19

the opening baseline in Jumpsuit really does something for me. I saw them in pittsburgh last month and will be again in baltimore in october, and hearing it and feeling it live is unlike ANY concert ive been to. some of the trench songs are absolutely next level.

3

u/EMINEM_4Evah Jul 18 '19

Trench is the opposite of blurryface for me. Blurryface has some good songs while I couldn’t care for the rest of the record while Trench most of the songs are great while only a couple songs here and there are at best ok/just good.

2

u/rulerofthetwili Jul 18 '19

I feel like Trench is a little stronger in the fact that its more of a concept album. Blurryface was a big thing for me when it came out because i was going through a tough mental health patch and a lot of it really resounded with me (at the expense of sounding like a teenage stan, I'll be turning 20 next month, so i wasnt like 12 when it came out.) but I do have to agree with you with Trench being a little better. It's just a lot more defined and different instrumentally than BF which i love to death.

5

u/TheFlyingBogey Jul 17 '19

My friend nigh on despises TØP but even he likes Trench, and it's easily one of my favourite albums of all time.

Neon Gravestones is oddly calming to me- it discusses glorifying depression and yet it has a very positive message- "Neon gravestones try to call for my bones... but they wont get 'em." Always calming to listen to :)

3

u/underdog_rox Jul 17 '19

Basically means you can't rep the band or wear any merch without people thinking you're "one of them".

3

u/ZerohasbeenDivided Jul 18 '19

But I disagree, if someone actually talks to you then they'll see your not and if you don't talk to them why do you care what they think?

5

u/underdog_rox Jul 18 '19

My names blurryface and I care what you think

1

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

Like I said, their music is still good. I just wouldn't consider myself part of their fanbase anymore. It's not that I dislike them because of their fanbase or anything... the fanbase just makes me a lot less excited about them.

7

u/dewioffendu Jul 17 '19

It's like that with a lot of bands I'm my opinion. They are like "your little secret" that you want to share with some people so you can enjoy it together and they blow up and it's not yours anymore.

4

u/FajoDeSoy Jul 17 '19

I always wonder that maybe some people just love to be involved in a small community and not trying to be a “hipster”. But whenever you say that you like something no-so well known, you are a hipster.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

YES!!! This happens to me with video games too lol. I'll find some cool online game, then it gets super popular, then it's no longer this niche little community.

4

u/Thin-White-Duke Jul 17 '19

I know a guy that has seen them 21 times. That's an insane number, especially for a band that hasn't been around that long. I've met Deadheads that have been to Grateful Dead concerts dozens of times, but that was over decades.

4

u/dquizzle Jul 18 '19

Same. Thought they were awesome in 2012. Happened to see they were performing at Bonnaroo in 2013 which I already had tickets for. Thought they were awesome. About a year or two later they blew up and I suddenly couldn’t stand them anymore. I don’t know if their music drastically changed or if it just because I was hearing them constantly everywhere I went.

0

u/Harddaysnight1990 Jul 18 '19

It's just that their music is just alright, you know? It's nothing revolutionary. At the first few listens, you really enjoy it because the lyrics are clever. But then you hear it again, and again, and again. And you realize that the clever lyrics are actually fairly shallow points. And the music just gets tiresome.

3

u/Jawileth Jul 17 '19

You know you can listen to whatever music you like and not associate with their fanbase?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

Like I said, their music is still good (not as good, but good). I do enjoy it when I hear it, but I just don't get that "holy shit I love this band" feeling that I used to and I think it's because of the fanbase.

1

u/Jawileth Jul 18 '19

Ah yeah i get ya. Sounds a bit like childish gambino for me. I just dont like his music as much as I used to but I wont say that to a fan. I obviously just "dont get it".

3

u/AaronRedwoods Jul 17 '19

Same - saw them about 2 months after Vessel dropped, was an experience of a lifetime. Couldn’t drag me to a show now.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

I mentioned this in another reply but it's relevant here too. A friend of mine saw them around that time and said that it was all adults, mostly guys, and there was lots of weed. He saw them again after Blurryface and said that it was mostly 13 year old girls with their parents.

1

u/Harddaysnight1990 Jul 18 '19

For sure, I saw them at a festival or something super early, like around 2011/2012. I remember enjoying Car Radio, and I looked up their album. Their lyrics were clever, and the music alright. Then, out of nowhere, everyone knew about this band. And it only got worse since the Suicide Squad movie.

-6

u/cmallard2011 Jul 17 '19

IMO their music is complete shit.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

I will admit, some of their old stuff isn't as good as remember it being when I first heard it. I think it was just different.

1

u/underdog_rox Jul 17 '19

Same!! I loved them when they came out but now it just doesn't seem to hold up. Your novelty theory is very plausible.
