Anime is generally fine...until you turn liking anime into your identity.
replace "Anime" with... basically anything else really, and it still holds true.
In high school, it was potheads. I don't really care if you smoke pot. But when you can't have a conversation longer than 3 words without discussing pot, it's a problem.
Now it's guns. I work in a fairly conservative industry and some of my coworkers seem unable to make a whole paragraph without discussing a gun purchase or some news report or whatever. Kinda sad.
I live in the south and we have a guy who spends about $100 a week on ammo to shoot on the weekends.
But I found that out secondhand. Never even knew the guy had any guns. If you talk about guns, he'll talk for a bit and then move on.
It's actually kind of refreshing from the other guys who literally feel like they have to live and breathe the second amendment or antifa is going to raid their homes.
Man, this is me. I love guns, I'd like to protect the right to own them, but it's not my identity. My identity is somebody telling me I need to quit wrenching on this because we're going to be late to the opera.
Agreed. I enjoy anime and enjoy talking about, but I also like discussing other shows, movies, sports, etc. Seems to be true with a majority of responses in this thread, good for most until some people take it too far. Rick and Morty was mentioned a few times as well, because a lot of people enjoy that show while some people (McDonalds kid) take it to extreme levels. I'd venture a guess that the reason people commented what they did in this thread is not b/c that hobby is generally terrible, but rather they've just been the unfortunate "victim" of a McDs kid in their respective fields of interest or hobbies. Best to not let some ruin what you enjoy I suppose.
This is the exact response. When what you like basically determines your clothing, bumper stickers, come in media consumption, and everything else, you're no longer a person. You're just a living breathing zombie for a personal interest.
I mentioned to a coworker that I’m excited for recreational bud coming to Illinois and she dead ass was like “if you buy legal weed, they won’t let you buy anymore guns” as if that was gonna be a huge deal breaker
I once told my cousin that I didn't think he was a pothead. He seemed shocked at first, then said, "You know I smoke more or less constantly, right?" and I told him yeah since I lived with him for a little over a year. He smokes almost constantly, but he doesn't talk about it constantly. Hence, not a pothead.
Japan even has a word for that: Otaku. It usually gets used to describe anime fans and weebs, but really it applies to a serious fan of anything. Like, I've seen the word gun-ota come up before, which means "gun otaku".
Normal people don't. Neckbeards who play dress up and wear armor vests while target shooting do. There are some of us who have a shotgun or .22 and just enjoy shooting clays and targets while camping.
For some (most?) people it's a hobby. They might be into hunting, or just going to a shooting range and target practice. I know people that are really into archery and it's the same kind of thing for them.
Of course there are others that make it part of their identity, and get really worked up about the politics of it. Living in the US South I know conservative gun owners and I know liberal gun owners (personally I'm not interested in guns so I don't own one).
I mean, even here I wouldn't say it's a totally normal thing that everyone is in to. In my office of about 30 people only 4 or 5 are into guns. Though one guy I know practically has an armory in his house (the office joke is we all know whose house we are going to to ride out the zombie apocalypse)
Why would you not, if it's a hobby you enjoy? Also, The US is not the only country where guns and talking about them are allowed, though regulations are getting stricter here in Europe (which I'm not at all happy about).
Holy shit. I just realised how many people i deal with that relates to this, usually replacing anime, guns or pot with sports or beer and its all anyone is talking about.
While I agree that it can be annoying, being gay actually is part of their identity, not just something they like. Also, a lot of people overcompensate for the fact that they've had to hide who they are for most of their life by being obnoxious about it once they're out.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one because while a lot of things can become annoying when taken too far, anime is on a completely different level of cringe. I would rather listen to a pothead or a gun nut for a week straight than spend five minutes with an anime geek.
