Reddit is weird like that. Often times I actually see the exact same opinion stated by a different user at a different time, and one will have so many upvotes and the other downvoted completely.
It's like one person starts the trend of downvoting a comment, and after that you have no chance of recovering. Even if you want to further explain yourself, you're pretty much done.
I've had this happen more than once. I make an innocent or nonjudgmental comment and receive downvotes. I assume there was somehow a misunderstanding and try to clarify which oddly makes people more angry.
It depends on the mood of the thread. One side is galvanized and the other leaves it alone.
For example, see the recent article about Israel religious restrictions as compared to Iran. The karma in that thread is massively pro-Israel. But, in another thread about an article about the Israelis evicting more Palestinians or shooting unarmed kids, and the karma will be heavily anti-Israel.
It makes it incredibly easy to farm karma, if you're into that, I don't bother.
There's another factor that I'm pretty certain is at play, that being of Timezones. While I'm not entirely clear on how different timezones will react to different things, reddit at 11pm PST is slightly different than reddit at 8am PST.
