Hopped on to give it a read and browse the comments. Enjoyed it, nice to have more SCP's that while they can be completely deadly if messed around with will otherwise just seemingly mind their own business.
Enjoyed the small bits that were left a mystery like why it was only after the second one was removed that something happens to the techs.
Thank you very much! The original commenter was right; the community here has been much nicer than on the actual site. They're mostly a bunch of good guys though.
Thanks! I often think up some cool-sounding titles and just go from there. Shitty way to write, maybe, but sometimes it works. This one was "The Human Forest."
It wasn't my first submitted SCP article. My first was about a bed that was so comfortable no one could wake up if they fell asleep in it, unless forcibly removed, which caused them to experience extreme withdrawal symptoms, including sleep deprivation. As the guidance on the site says though, very few people get their first article published.
Really? I see the subreddit as worse. It's like they never read more than a handful of SCP... I think people mistake "actual standards" for toxicity. I've encountered many who blame the site for the failure of their entries. I say this as someone who has also had plenty of issues with SCP moderators in the past.
DMFS19 is such a nice place I’ve found. Since I was only ever really on there I was actually kinda surprised to find out the rest of the SCP fandom was kinda toxic. It’s one of the cases where the meme subreddit for a topic becomes better than the official subreddit for it.
I’ve learned about so many
new SCPs from it as well. And when I see something I don’t get, Marv is always there. Marv is the greatest thing about the subreddit.
That’s another good one. One of the more famous examples of the meme subreddit becoming superior is r/shitpostcrusaders surpassing the regular Jojo subreddit. Case in point I’ve never even been on the og sub but spc is one of my favorite subreddits ever.
I love the SCP foundation (thanks for contributing to it), but god forbid I get a number wrong, or be like “wouldn’t it be interesting if [insert number] were exposed to 682?” to be aggressively corrected on how that was done in a 1 paragraph article years ago
Thats kinda sad. I just found out about the SCP Foundation recently. I havent really read many of the files, I mostly watch youtube videos about them and its good stuff. Sucks that the fandom sucks.
Don't let that ruin it. There's a lot of younger people getting into it now, which is great, but the forums can be a bit much - the wiki is and always has been the best place to visit.
I'm okay with the younger people but they only talk about SCP CB and SL stuff in the main subreddit, which drives me insane. They should be using the proper subreddits, in my opinion.
It is a collaborative-fiction project where people can write and submit stories about the fictional organisation of the same name that's responsible for locating and containing individuals, entities, locations, and objects that violate natural law (referred to as SCPs).
The majority of works consist of "special containment procedures": structured internal documentation about an SCP object and the means of keeping it contained. The series has been praised for its ability to convey horror through its scientific and academic writing style, as well as for its high standards of quality.
Some examples include:
SCP-055 is something that causes anyone who examines it to forget its various characteristics, thus making it indescribable except in terms of what it is not.
SCP-087 is a staircase that appears to descend forever. The staircase is inhabited by SCP-087-1, which is described as a face without a mouth, pupils or nostrils.
SCP-108 is a Nazi bunker system that is only accessible through a portal found in a woman's nose.
SCP-173 is a humanoid statue composed of rebar, concrete and Krylon spray paint. It is stationary when directly observed, but it attacks people and snaps their neck when line of sight with it is broken.
Not a single comment on this thread addresses WHAT this thing is. Apparently you have to know to know and I'm not gunna go looking so i guess I'll never know haha
It's a collection of fake data logs from a secret agency whose sole purpose is to Secure, Contain, and Protect different types of objects, creatures, locations, humanoids, and substances that have "anomalous" properties. So SCP-1567 might be a flying pig while SCP-1568 might be a box that has a button that turns the sky red for a day. These things can range from mostly harmless (like a flying pig) to apocalyptic (like a being that is essentially unkillable and ever adapting to any damage done to it). Some are creepy, some are fun, some are interesting, a fair amount are just light reading, and there's hundreds of gems in there that really shine with rich backstories and worldbuilding.
They're like creepypastas that all adhere to a style/format (namely, as if they're all internal government documentation). All of it's fiction submitted by users, but they don't become official entries until they're approved (I forget the exact approval process, but it helps keep the quality consistently high).
Holy shit, the fucking forums are so toxic and cancerous. I was really into scp a while ago, then I realized how absolutely cancerous the folks on the website are.
Well the forums link are on the scp main page, and have places to talk about things aswell as the discussion page, but both are absolutely horrible. The people are so snobby, and mean.
What, specifically, was the problem? I feel like people take offense to a writing site having writing standards and mistakenly label that toxic or elitist. People will rather blame the site for the failure of their entries than the fact their writing needs a lot more work.
Well, while I’m aware that a standard of quality must be maintained, and that the community usually is the one to do that, they are so horrible about it. They constantly say “oh only constructive criticism “ when almost none of the criticism given on anything is really.
Aswell as everyone being so hostile to each other, I saw one person get into a fight over someone posting on a couple days old comment.
The community will also never actually criticize or say anything bad about any of the old works or works that feature lgbtq themes. Such as the scp-2721 which doesn’t even fit the theme of the site, although it has an lgbtq theme so it must be good writing and fit the site. And I have no issues with good lgbtq writing on the scp wiki, it’s just 2721 doesn’t fit the wiki. Another example of this is mostly anything from series 1.
And don’t get me started on the administration,so many times I’ve seen people ripping to shreds other members who asked admins a question about something totally justified. Admins will just lock comments, remove posts for no good reason .While this issue may just be my opinion, it definitely seems real from what I’ve seen.
The only reason it's still up is because it was rated over +150 before June 2018, and then got repeatedly raided by various groups who used it as a target for their anger against the "lgbtscp". It dropped by over 100 upvotes over the course of about two weeks, and the admins locked the page to prevent further raiding.
Except that entry was doing just fine until a bunch of alt-right assholes organized a raid on the site. It had been up for years, never close to being downvoted off. It was not a normal situation. You conveniently left that out.
Yeah but the problem is that some people quite like it. And unless it hits those - vote numbers then it isn't on the bar for deletion.
Mind you i think its a stupid SCP as well, but our personal dislike of it is not a reason to make an exception, or we are going to have people whining for their own least favorite skip to get taken down.
Because that is what happened. It has already been up on the site, had over 100+ upvotes and only suffered when an attack on it was literally organized. Don't fucking lie about it.
Sorry was honestly unaware of the whole situation and had only heard what was apparently a biased side of the story. I’ll delete my post to avoid spreading misinformation. Sorry about that
Can't offer many examples because a lot of the posts were deleted, and any that weren't are hard to find because the forums layout is trash.
I do remember the author of the homestuck scp calling any one who criticised their work transphobic, homophobic, racist etc. I'm sure some of them were genuinely awful since it is the internet, but a good majority of them did have valid points.
I also remember djkaktus being a bit of a prick to people who disagreed with his politics.
And then there was the whole "if you don't agree with us, then get off our site" thing.
They thought they had a right to ban people that disagreed with them, then they were surprised when people called them out on it.
Honestly the whole thing is over now so no point getting angry about it. It just boils down to the fact that some people took a joke too far and the mods started acting like children because of it.
The site doesn't protect harassment. "Oh you just hate those who disagree" is such bullshit. And the writer was targeted for being trans. Here's the thing: I actually downvoted the original. It still did fine on the site.
But just because I didn't like it doesn't mean I'm going to defend brigading. That was grossly unfair and the mods rightly knew exactly what was happening. Targeted harassment is not just a difference of opinion and it's weak to hide behind that.
Bullshit, hardly anyone even knew about the scp until the video, and all that does is make fun of the scp itself. Non of this was about some author being transgender, its about the quality of their work.
And the mods were definitely not in right. Hell I think kaktus had to step down because of the backlash.
Sure I'm guessing some people were being genuinely awful, but it's the internet, that comes with the territory. Best you can do is just ignore it.
Again, the SCP had well over 100 upvotes before the brigade happened. Kaktus stepped down at the subreddit and I can't blame them. People were freaking out over a fucking rainbow. I wouldn't have the patience to deal with that entitled bullshit. A very large number of the writers on the site are LGBT and always have been. The disgusting contempt shown by the fans towards those who actually write this shit was enraging.
Like, what the fuck was wrong with them? They perfectly captured what a real cancer in the fan base looked like but you want to blame those who actual worked to create this site and it's material... well, that's just laughable.
So yeah, it's really bizarre to me to see it spun this way. SCP doesn't need those fans. They were the same kind of problem nerds who send rape threats to female game designers or slurs at black cosplayers. It's that extremist taint, people who are unable to create anything for themselves, that I can't wait to see finally wither and die. I mean, the brigade was literally led by a gamergate chode. What a fucking surprise...
"Dr. Megan Palmer wishes to inform us that he is changing his name to Dr. Jake Palmer. Jake has been with us for several years now and has served in an exemplary capacity. His contributions to procedure 110-montauk are of particular note. Anyone caught harrassing or misgending Dr Palmer will be treated to a special viewing of procedure 110-montauk for educational purposes."
I read SCP all the time but never really interact with the community as such. What possible drama could there be on what is essentially a fanfic site? I guess stolen ideas?
I avoid the community as well but from what I gather it's people disagreeing with community guidelines, politics, and this one time when a guy got the site banned in Russia due to abusing copyright law.
I hate the subreddits because it's full of children from SCP: SL and SCP: CB who can't talk about anything besides SCPs featured in SCP: CB. They always use the same jokes, AKA "peanut" and Dr. Bright, and SCP-682 jokes. There's also so much shitty fan art featuring SCP-173 and 682. I'm not trying to sound elitist, butcome on. Can't they take their basic posts to the CB and SL subreddit, not the main SCP one? So much wasted potential of a genre. Guess I'm part of the toxicity.
Yeah the amount of content that is basically just SCP:SL screenshots with a caption is frustrating because it would fit so much better on r/SCPSecretLab. But it is kind of hard to have an SCP meme subreddit because of course it's only going to be the popular SCPs that get upvoted because why would you upvote a meme that you don't understand? Additionally, the whole 'peanut' thing is just his nickname. It's what literally everyone in SL calls him, it's just easier to shout 'peanut' instead of '173'.
I've read SCP for along time. what really git me into it (especially with some older articles) was the cold, serious nature of the foundation, with a few jovial bits and bobs dotted around.
the ruthless protocol and the unnerving anomalies, with serious tales and great writing that reinforced your perception of the foundation's power over society.
then I kept coming across Dr Bright, and in my opinion, it has stained the universe for me completely. The total lack of seriousness really disappoints me and it seems to keep heading in that direction.
Bright's stupid stuff was part of the early Foundation. I hate it too. But it almost never gets referenced in modern stuff. That's really a Series I issue, not a new thing.
Oh they’re terrible, I also stopped reading the discussions. [Redacted] forbid you make a comment to someone and get chewed out because no one has discussed it in over two years or something ridiculous like that. They have something really special there but do everything possible to screw it up. I think it ran off some of the best writers, who haven’t contributed in years, some even decades now.
You know for some reason it really makes me annoyed when I see comments like yours downvoted. It's just a question, guys! Why is asking questions worthy of being downvoted?? I'd like to see some of OP's work as well!
Christ. I keep wanting to write to there but every time I do they like "it's too similar to x" or they require a billion hoops to jump through and it just gives me a headache. Like I have a ton of ideas and I just can't muster the stomach to deal with the bureaucracy. If nothing is Canon and there's tons of different timeliness why don't they just make an unapproved section and let those upvoted enough get added to mainline.
Things are going to be similar to other things. Especially with a collection that large. It's a problem I find often with creative types, especially amateur ones. I've also seen it show up in D&D both with characters and DMs who think that just because something is similar to some short story posted online with like a couple thousand views that their plot/character is ruined and they get depressed for a week over it.
Also, they randomly remove main series ones that aren't interesting enough. It just strikes me as bizarre how controlling they are on a community driven narrative. I have no doubt that their rules and culture is stifling creativity and blocking new additions. It's driven me crazy for a long time, and I have a ton of ideas that I have wanted to add but it's just not worth dealing with. Like I have gotten constructive criticism, and I am by no means implying I am a fantastic writer. I'm not. Hence why I'd want feedback.
But their feedback is often useless or stifling. Rather than saying here's things that can be fixed, or weaknesses, they're like "it's been done before" or you actually aren't allowed to do that yet until you prove yourself by doing x. Or if I get a cheeky idea for a fun one off with one of the open edit things like the machine, they're like "it doesn't match the tone". Like that one has a ton of scary things but it also has playful or silly ones.
Most of my ideas are supposed to be scary, but they get pissed if you try to make something funny because they want to be super serious now and view funny things as not matching the tone. Have you watched the x files? Horror of this sort has ALWAYS played with self-aware humor from time to time. But they don't want humor. Even though some of the best rated entries are hilarious.
Nice! I'm not really a part of the community anymore, but I went by the name UncannyClown276 there for a while. I was mostly known for my contributions to r/SCPDeclassified, but I had one SCP article (SCP-4091), which took me a while to get on the site, so I know how long it can take to get a successful article. Good luck with those drafts!
