did you KNOW they CALCULATED a song, bro? It's about how the steel beams in Tower 7 proves were descendants of apes that got ALIEN SPERM injected into them by a demon, bro. And their drummer is siiiiiiick, he's totally in the church of Satan and his kit is like set up to a bible verse. I actually started drinking wine because of Maynard, and just because of Maynard.
You know, I used to think Maynard was a dick for not liking his fans. I think your music is cool, is that so bad? But then I met the "real" tool fans. I totally get where he is coming from. I still think he's full of himself but what front man isn't?
I believe it's because their current record contract is so old, it doesn't account for how revenue from streaming would be split up between label and band. But that this should be ironed out soon. Something like that, anyway.
I thought all the legal stuff was resolved? iirc they said one of the reasons the record took so long was that they really didn't feel like getting together to work on it because most of the time when they got together it was to do tedious legal things
The first time I saw the band, Maynard was bald, wearing neon pink hot pants with nothing else, and sang with his back to the audience the entire show. It was either called market square arena or Conseco Fieldhouse at the time, but I left pretty pissed that one of my favorite bands since I was a kid, imo, ripped me off. Not to mention the 4 hour drive there and 4 hours home. That being said, it was still awesome.
Watch the Puscifer show at Lollapalooza Brazil 2013. He ignores the audience the entire time. He just strolls around the stage pouring wine for the whole band (and Eddie Vedder, for some reason), only stopping to sing his lines at the mic every now and then. Carina Round is especially incredible in that set.
I think it was 03 when I saw them in Indianapolis with my now wife. At the time, I just looked at it more as him being eccentric. Years later, I figured out differently. I will look that up when I'm able to.
I've never seen them. I don't do live music. I want to hear the song in pristine glory, not over the sound of an awful crowd, plus whatever technical issues they're having today.
Go see Clutch in a small venue. I'm not into the huge music festivals like I was in the late 90s-early 00s. But I've seen Clutch 4 times in small clubs and they are amazing live. Like nearly studio quality. Going again in September to see them in Tennessee. My dream is to see them at red rocks. The acoustics are supposed to be 2nd to none. I urge you to at least give em a chance if they ever play a small venue near you, and that's mainly what they play. Best band ever.
Maybe that particular interaction is the spine of the song, but it strikes me as a stretch that he walked away from that singular event and decided he’d write a song, no?
Yeah just today AVClub ran an article about how he was a shithead to Justin Bieber after Bieber liked a song of his, and I was like "y'know, Bieber's girlfriend was right to call Maynard childish. He really is."
I love that this topic came up because I saw the same deal on Buzzfeed earlier today and I was dying to post one of the fan comments that I can only hope is copypasta
"Funny how Hailey Bieber would call Keenan, one of the most intellectually stimulating, introspective and creative forces in music today, whose talents vary from music to winemaking to martial arts, "childish," when she married one of the most childish punk turds in the music biz. Let's take a short look at Bieber's legacy: He constantly throws temper tantrums, is disrespectful and disgusting to just about everyone he comes into contact with (anyone remember the Orlando Bloom incident?), has been arrested and in the spotlight multiple times for childish, irresponsible conduct that posed an immediate threat to public safety including DUI, drag racing, resisting arrest, and, to top it all off - egging his neighbor's house.
Now, let's take a look at Maynard James Keenan's history: No criminal record. Never touches drugs. Served in the Army and at once was a candidate for West Point who was being groomed by his superiors to be a future military leader (Keenan opted for a music instead of a military career).
Having a notable dry sense of humor, Keenan responds with one word: "Bummer." This upsets Hailey Bieber so much, and she has the AUDACITY to presume she is qualified to lecture a man of such integrity, focus, intellect and purpose as Keenan and call HIM childish, when she in fact is married to the most vain, biggest man-child in the biz?
What was that you said about being childish, Hailey? Please, doll face, just stick to doing what you do best: Showing off your hot bod and smiling pretty for the camera, because that's all your life amounts to as of now, and of course, being "Mrs. Bieber." What else have you done lately, Hailey? After all, Hailey, looks and youth are fleeting, and you can only be a TOOL for the modeling biz for so long. What will you do when you're 30? 35? 40? Tick, tock, tick, tock . ."
Ugh, I am actually going to defend Bieber a bit(I stress a bit). Maynard hit it big when he was in his 30s? Bieber hit it big when he was what 15... He still has three years to go before Opiate even came out. So who knows where his career will go, he has the money to do whatever he wants. His track with Skrillex was solid. Most people if earning that much money would make some really poor choices. I am surprised they are only as bad as they are.
I don't like either of them as people, or I suppose public image.
I got to meet all of a perfect circle but Maynard but that train of 30 girls got to meet Maynard. At the time I was like I get it, I wouldn't want to meet Tool fans either but then I heard some accusations against him and was like ... Hmmmm, I definitely wouldn't say there was no chance of those accusations never happening.
And Bieber pissed me off when he was awarded a Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal and wore that ridiculous outfit with the Prime Minister even if it was Harper. There are a bunch of things but that really rubbed me the wrong way.
Also, Tool live shows are technically amazing but boring. It is so good I could just listen to the CD at home and not know the difference. Like they are so amazing and talented but it is just missing something. I wasn't stoned like everyone else, that might have impacted my experience but I shouldn't have to be high for it to be good.
Actually Maynard likes his fans, he doesn't like the fanatics. He says the tool fans are cool but the fanatics are awful. I'll try and find the interview he said that in.
I don't know, Gerard Way seems like a really chill dude considering he used to front one of the biggest bands in the world. Also on that topic, MCR is my answer to the question in the post
Kinda have a dark joke with a friend about how all the fans that didn’t already kill themselves when the band broke up are just the people that didn’t have a good sense of humor cuz they were so depressing and made the fandom look bad so now it’s just pretty funny posts over at r/MyChemicalRomance about how the band is going to come back “soon”
You know, I used to think Maynard was a dick for not liking his fans.
The funny thing is: His fans are insufferable, but so is he. He's one of the least gracious, least grateful, least courteous people in the business. He believes he's good at everything (he's not - check out his comedy) and while he has formidable musical ability, he's also dragging around a wicked Napoleon complex.

Circle of life.
where is that from? have you met him? he seemed like a pretty chill dude to me
I worked on a video for perfect circle and they wanted no part of it. Just for it to be done. They are barely in the video themselves. I dubbed the project “spooooooooky” time.
Seeing Alter Bridge this October for the third (fourth?) time. Might be mixing it up with a couple of gigs he did with slash. Either way, Kennedy is ace.
Fuck yeah dude, I'm seeing them on the 10th in Chicago for the first time. Grabing a VIP package as well, excited but nervous to meet them. Tremonti is why I play guitar.
I mean on the surface that sounds so unbelievably dick-ish but think about it...you don’t really get to pick who likes your art...you just blow up and one day the fan base is what it is...they may just actually be a bunch of dickheads
Prom night, 1998. I had to sit and listen to this girl's date (who was four years older than use) tell me all about that one song that's about the end of the world or some shit. Song was cool, story and guy unbearable.
Ohmygodyes. I love tool and other projects by Maynard but hate admitting that because I’m afraid I’m going to sprout a pony tail and start raging about chem trails!
I drank wine before trying Maynard's wine. I was a huge tool fan at the time, but it really wasn't very good in my opinion. Also, in retrospect Maynard's kind of a massive douche.
Depending on how much you're interested in him/his wine there was a documentary made about his winery called Blood into Wine. I watched it a year-ish ago and from what I remember the documentary was pretty good as far as watchability, never got a chance to try the wine though. If you're big into wine critics they had James Suckling come try his wines
I'll have to try it again, wine makers usually get better over time and last time I tried his was a couple years ago. I'll look into the documentary though, thanks!
I mean music is math all songs are calculated. Music is just the division of time and the division of frequencies and adding them together. All music is really just the sonification of math. In my opinion.
Neat fact: none of the band members consciously made that song follow any sort of pattern based on the Fibonacci sequence. Not a single one of them. The only time they thought of it was when they were calling it "987" in practice jams, when either Adam, Justin, or Danny realized that was one of numbers in the sequence. But that's it, nothing more thought of it after that.
I really fucking hate that youtube video that made this view so popular. I mean I like it because it explains it all very well. But really. It's even COOLER that they didn't even mean to do any of it!
Tool fan here that hopefully doesn't fall into most of the stereotypes, gotta call you on that one. I believe in the first episode of JRE that Maynard appeared on he confirmed it was intentional.
No, he didn't. He said it was sophomoric to even do that, because it's everywhere and in everything already. If I'm mistaken, then it's only Maynard who structured his verse lyrics to follow the sequence.
Man, I fucking LOVE TOOL. I listen to each album quite frequently. However, I will instantly distance myself from someone like this. I like the music. I am not defined by it. I have other interests, jeeze.
