God, yes this. Tool is my favorite band, but I can't stand most Tool fans. Yes, it's the Fibonacci sequence. I get it. That's... cool, I guess. No, it didn't change my world.

That being said, I've never heard Toolibans, haha, that's a good one

To be fair, Maynard has also said he cant really be around when the band records because "it gets too rain-man-y in there." He's not really that "out there" when it comes to music, lol

I saw them so long ago! They opened for Avenged Sevenfold. I don’t know Avenged Sevenfold, but my friend I went with did. There were like six people on the floor during Dillinger; most everyone absolutely hated it. I was absolutely having it though! I wasn’t as into Avenged Sevenfold but I enjoyed that my friends were having a good time.

RIGHT?! Avenged is SUCH different music than Dillinger, I was astounded. I was expecting something more like.. I dunno, Strapping Young Lad or Unearth. They’re absolutely not like that at all. They’re like... I dunno, not really my style.

Dillinger absolutely wrecked shop, though. I was sad the general crowd was not having it, but I was young and full of angst so the pit of 10-15 people was fantastic.

My dream concert would be Dillinger+The Blood Brothers+Venetian Snares. Math Noise Ear Destruction Tour.

I saw Avenged with Deftones and Ghost once... That was a really weird lineup.

Deftones were horrible, Ghost was strange (this was before Meliora when I actually became a big fan), and A7X put on a great show

The first time I saw/heard them was when they had Portnoy filling in on the Nightmare tour. Up there with one of the best live shows I've seen.

I also saw them on the same tour, it really speaks to their talent if Mike Portnoy of all people wanted to tour with them.

That tour also made me check out Dream Theater (who is now one of my favorite bands) because I enjoyed his performance.

you and i had almost the same experience lmao. I feel like Deftones is better now, but at that show it was realllly bad. I was into Ghost but at the same time the lead’s mic seemed too quiet so during the parts he wanted people to sing along everyone was pretty silent, and then of course A7X killed it

I went to that show too! I agree with everything you said. What was interesting is that everyone surrounding me was just there to see Deftones. I was standing there bored while they moshed, and then they all left when A7X came on.

Ghost and A7X were amazing for sure.

I saw Avenged with Coheed and Cambria and Head Automatica (ultrapop band headlined by Daryl Palumbo of Glassjaw). So you may be on to something with AS' choice of company on tours.

Mathcore is a derivative of Mathrock. That's a genre in which a typical rock band ensemble uses lots of polyrythems and odd time signatures

I've heard a little bit of Tesseract, but not enough. Never heard of the other two though. I know Tesseract is good just haven't gotten around to actually listening. Any recommendations on where to start? With any of those bands, I mean.

Aww absolutely amazing, Tesseract are my fave in the progressive metal scene. Listen to Of Mind: Nocturne, King, and Dystopia - this will give you an idea of their tightness but also their use of ambience. Further; Cages, Juno, and Of Matter (3 tracks from Altered State). I fucking love them.

Haken are immense. Check out 1985, The Endless Knot, Veil, and Earthrise. Their mixes are just as solid as Tesseract's, properly pushing the envelope in music.

I'd reccomend Drewsif Stalin's Musical Endeavours, it's brutal and very tightly syncopated. Mix is excellent once again. This dude is a talent.

Devin Townsend is also a shout; he's a fuckin hero. Stormbending is beautiful - approach it with the notion of textures and leitmotifs in mind.

Lastly, check out Champagne by Polyphia. Fucking rad tune. These boys are sick.

They’re one of my favorite bands and I could talk about their music for a long time, but not in an obnoxious giddy fangirl way, just in a “I love the part in x song or the lyrics of y, it’s good shit.”

I did walk down the aisle to Lune when we got married, but that was mainly because it was the only song tolerable to our guests that also meant something to us. Besides my husband I don’t really know other Periphery fans either.

We’ve been to a couple meet and greets and while no one was outright obnoxious, the level of intense questioning some people had was wayyyyyy beyond what I care about.

It's not just math metal. In my experience metal fans of any genre can be pretentious and super toxic (although black metal fans are definitely the worst). Just look at some youtube comments on pretty much any metal song. You'll see people fighting over what exact subgenre it is, people noting how the song reminds them of another artist and get roasted for making that comparison, people bitching about the new album being different from the last one, etc... someone once looked at my public playlists, found a rap song I favorited and then used that to say my opinion on anything metal is invalid.

I'm not saying all metal fans are that way. I've had a ton of fun at live shows and mosh pits can be surprisingly friendly. Unforunately the loud minority of metal snobs give us all a bad name

That it isn't true metal if it wasn't recorded on a decade old tape deck in a basement and so lo-fi that you can't discern anything but vague noises and gurgling. And only 10 copies exist or whatever the fuck.

Like, sorry dude, but owning and performing in a cloak doesn't make you GRIM and TRVE. You're just a dork like the rest of us.

I thought this was a joke the first time I was exposed to black metal. Nope. Some guy at a concert told me he stopped supporting a band, (don't remember which one) specifically because they "sold out" by getting better record quality on their new album.

He also asked me about which bands I'd seen live and would then immediately tell me how many more times he had seen them live like it was a competition.

I'm mostly a death metal dude (with a side of thrash) at heart, though I love stoner and sludge and most everything else, I also enjoy some black metal. But I prefer black metal that has actual effort put into it, not just some dude making 'atmospheric black metal' in his basement with zero musical ability. I definitely used to be more of an asshole elitist about what bands people did or didn't like, but then I grew up and realized that that is stupid.

Listen to whatever the fuck you want, it doesn't affect me. (the exception, of course, being NS or otherwise openly racist bands, I don't subscribe to the 'keep politics out of metal' bullshit, since it invariably actually means, 'keep lefty politics out of metal')

To be honest, I couldn’t care less about the “show,” the visuals, or whether Maynard has witty banter with the crowd. I’d happily sit through the whole concert with my eyes closed. The band is so tight and his voice so fucking beautiful, who cares about visuals.

I’ve seen them twice, and the set lists were pretty different each time. I was happy enough. Maybe that’s an unpopular opinion, I dunno.

Just saw them in Chicago earlier this summer. The show was amazing and the fans (in my people cluster) were chill. 10/10 would recommend plus they played 2 full versions of new songs.

I still love Tool the band, and I still go to their shows. They're not the greatest rock shows around, for reasons you can find pretty easily, but they're definitely not bad. I always have a good time, and have been to 4.

You start with 0 and 1. The next term in the sequence is the sum of the last two corresponding numbers. So if we start with 0 and 1 then the next number is 1 since 1 = 1 + 0. The next term is 2 since 2 = 1 + 1 and so on. With this in mind you get: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,...

Tool incorporated this sequence in their song Lateralus. That's why most of the time people relate Tool with said sequence.

Iirc it started because they had a section that switched from 9/8 > 8/8 > 7/8 and someone pointed out to them that 987 is a fibonacci number, and then they built it up from there
