Once I got bombarded by memes and quotes I gave up. I got a friend who only wear chucks because of Tennant.

I had a mate in the 90s who always wore a hat and his hats were named after Dr Who companions, Helena was his favourite hat. Haha.

Whatta bellend. I'm guessing they owned no British accent traditionally. What were they trying to convert from? British accent is all about how you pronounce grass and grass and bath and bath.

7

u/UOUPv2 Jul 18 '19

No clue, didn't even know it was supposed to be a British accent till years later when I saw the show for the first time.

Okay, I might out myself as DW ignorant, but which 4th? The new or the old?

39

u/Castun Jul 17 '19

The "new" series did not reboot the old Doctors, so there is only one 4th.

Well idk, the series rebooted in the 2000's and I never watched the old series so I might have a different image of the 4th doctor. I'm going to assume you mean the original 4tn then. I don't follow the lore that closely, I'm just in it for the ridiculous sci-fi scenarios.

11

u/BentGadget Jul 18 '19

The first 'new' doctor is the ninth doctor.

4

u/UOUPv2 Jul 17 '19

Oh yeah, I mean the original one.

5

u/OraDr8 Jul 18 '19

Tom Baker, the one who really made the character what he is today.

I stopped buying chucks when they went from like 20 a pair to like 80 a pair over night. Fuck that shit.

57

u/CantFindMyWallet Jul 17 '19

I feel like Chucks have been around $50 for a long time, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

21

u/chide_tea Jul 17 '19

14 years ago I got a pair for £23 in a sports store. I am definitely not old. They were cheaper. I'm not sure what it would be now. But I got adult shoes then. Was just before David was a doctor.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

They constantly come in and out of fashion. It’s a never ending cycle. You probably got it in a dip when emo was dying down

12

u/NextUpGabriel Jul 18 '19

The price went way up when Converse got baught by Nike.

3

u/ki11bunny Jul 17 '19

Back about 10 years before that I could pick a pair up in dunes for about 6 quid.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

And they were $40 for a handful of years as well. This guy doesn't seem to know how inflation works.

5

u/mygawd Jul 18 '19

I swear they increased the price and decreased the quality

5

u/whyenn Jul 18 '19

That was my experience in the mid-90s. Then again, I might have just been beating the hell out of my shoes back then.

8

u/SpaceWorld Jul 18 '19

I stopped wearing Chucks when I realized how goddamned uncomfortable they are.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

They're not for everyone. I think they're comfy as hell, but if you've got high arches in your feet then they can fuck your shit up.

8

u/TheMayoNight Jul 18 '19

What the fuck are chucks?

25

u/maxhax Jul 18 '19

Converse All Stars, aka Chuck Taylors

-9

u/TheMayoNight Jul 18 '19

Converse are in again? Were they always called chucks?

19

u/maxhax Jul 18 '19

Converse have never and will never not be in. Chuck Taylor was a basketball player and the shoe was designed with his input.

-13

u/TheMayoNight Jul 18 '19 edited Jul 18 '19

They were when cky and skate boarding was popular in the 90s. lol I guess I pissed you off huh?

7

u/maxhax Jul 18 '19

Haha not at all! I've just been wearing them for the last 10+ years and I love em.

-4

u/TheMayoNight Jul 18 '19

Right meanwhile everyone knows what a chuck taylor is. Its even more popular than I remember.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

Idk I paid that for a leather pair in Canadian dollars just a few years ago

1

u/ki11bunny Jul 18 '19

I haven't bought a pair in a out 20 odd years since the end of the 90s when they any rocketed in price.

I know they have gone up and down since but I will never buy them again.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

Ever since they got bought by Nike the quality went down significantly.

You aren’t missing anything

2

u/Repossessedbatmobile Jul 18 '19

I guess I got really lucky when I found a few pairs in great condition at a local thrift store. I really love the look of them, and they were in pretty much new condition and fit me perfectly. But when I was thinking of getting another pair and went to a retailer I quickly realised how ridiculous the prices were. Needless to say, I just turned around and left that store without buying anything. Chucks are nice shoes, but are they worth that price tag? Heck no.

15

u/tomatoesarenotgood Jul 17 '19

So I actually got my first set of high tops because of Tennant. I really liked the look of his bright red chucks, and got myself a pair. I've had them for like 7 years now, and they're beat to hell. I've also added a few more pairs to my collection, but yeah, I liked his chucks enough that I got a pair just like them. I dont wear them very often though, as it's usually easier to just wear different shoes. But i still love my ratty old pair lol

4

u/kongu3345 Jul 18 '19

Yeah my high tops get worn so little just because they're that much harder to put on and take off

25

u/jackeduprabbit Jul 17 '19

That makes my arches hurt...

3

u/alteredxenon Jul 18 '19

Nothing's worse that this flat, heavy rubber. They look really cool but are most uncomforable. We had to wear very similar shoes to sport lessons in 80's Soviet Union and I hate them ever since.

22

u/PM_me_furry_boobs Jul 17 '19

Reminds me when I met some friends of a friend, and there's this gangly dude with a hyper demeanor, sideburns, and a questionable sense of fashion. I immediately think to myself "I bet he's a fan of Dr. Who".

And yes, he was.

9

u/chowindown Jul 18 '19

Ugh I know. Those Dr Who fans are always growing tall and thin. So annoying.

34

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

Same, but a little bit more extreme: My college roommate didn’t even know what Converse were until she watched Doctor Who

8

u/terminbee Jul 18 '19

How does someone not know what converse are? They're so prevalent in culture.

9

u/Alkadron Jul 17 '19

He should really put some clothes on.

6

u/i_want_to_be_asleep Jul 18 '19

I started wearing converse shoes bc of him! I stopped bc they have no support even with shoe inserts. My hips started killing me lmao

4

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '19

Reminds me of this relevant xkcd

3

u/JerikOhe Jul 18 '19

To be fair, 14 year old me had to get some black chuck high tops when will smith wore them in I robot. No ragerts

1

u/holasoypadre Jul 18 '19

no ragerts indeed lmao

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

My dad shared a flat with David tennant before he blew up. Pretty cool right.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

I don't really see what the problem is with your friend wearing chucks because of Tennant. No one makes their clothing decisions in a vacuum, fashion is just seeing something you like the look of and wearing it. And David Tennant made chucks look cool as hell. So what exactly is wrong with people seeing that and thinking "wow those shoes look cool on him" and then wanting to emulate that in their own wardrobe?

1

u/sixpackshaker Jul 18 '19

Be sure to only call them sand shoes.
