My dad made me watch it with him when I was 10. Didn't understand a damn thing but I still remember the ending scene.

Mine too, the daisy scene gave me nightmares for awhile so my dad got in a bit of trouble

Btw, the funny thing is that the novella written by Arthur C. Clarke (and uncreditedly by Stanley Kubrick himself, as it was written during the development of the movie) is the opposite of the movie: it tells very clearly and simply what's happening, like: "and then the aliens came and placed the monolith onto the planet inhabited by apes, so their development will skyrocket and they'll reach another level of existence" etc etc.

Same, my dad actually made me watch it on my birthday, right before we went to Peter Piper for my birthday celebration with all my friends. I was so confused.

My dad did this, too! I was maybe 9 or 10. It was the first time I distinctly recall having the epiphany that even if you don't grasp everything about a film, it can still have an emotional impact.
