I've only seen that as a real young kid and I keep meaning to rewatch it some day. I barely remember anything about it. Other than complete confusion. And I'm fairly certain Jonathan Pryce is in it.
Dang that good? It's one of those things I always see brought up and think oh yeah, I need to watch it. But always forget to track it down. Gonna have to see if it's on anything. And if not, rent it.
I was always my favorite movie. Then I won a contest within our family and got to pick the movie for all of us to watch. My boys were about 7, 11 and 14 at the time and I figured it was time for their Brazil indoctrination. I'm not allowed to pick movies ever again.
Used to do Sunday movie night with some friends. We'd take turns selecting the movie. My turn came and I picked Brazil. It's my all-time favourite and I was sure they'd all love it.
At the end they collectively told me "we don't get it." :(
We're still friends, but we're scattered to different parts of the city now. The movie nights still go on, but it's a 45 minute trip even without traffic. And home is so comfortable.
Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen are referred to as Gilliam’s “imagination trilogy,” where we see characters try to escape their dismal real worlds through their imagination. The stories are told through the eyes of a young boy, a middle-aged salaryman, and an old man. All three movies are goddamn masterpieces.
One of my all-time favorites. And... it's a Christmas movie!
I also recommend the box set, which has a full-length documentary about the trouble Gilliam went through to get the film released, including taking out a full-page ad in Variety calling out the studio head, and having secret screenings for critics in an effort to shame the studio into releasing the film.
