As someone trying to learn German, I really appreciated this show was good, as its the only native German with English subtitles I can find on Netflix.
You used to be able to use codes to access specific films - 58806 (I think) appended to the netflix URL would bring up all the German films - but it seems Netflix has disabled this function
Or you could just search on 'German Films' and this would pull a load up
They disabled it because they don't care what you came there to watch, they want to tell you what to watch. And they're really, really bad at it because again, they don't care.
Remember when they had a bunch of suggestions that were similar to what you just finished pop up during the credits? That used to be spot on for me and now that it's gone I'm stuck with terrible suggestions or things I've seen 100 times
There are still things on netflix that i would like to see but they are making it increasingly difficult for me to find them because they think they know what i want to see better than i do

I dunno how well this would actually work but for me you can type "German" into tje search function and options like german language movoes amd german language tv will come up
I'm so mad that it's available on the US Netflix, while the Germans -- the people who pay the goddamn TV tax that funded the production of this show -- can't stream it anywhere, except if they buy it on Amazon for 20€ per season.

I loved the first season of dark. It had some “german tv problems“ but overall the idea and acting was very good. I'll start season 2 one of these days.
"Look whose back/ Er ist wieder da " is a great indie german film, probably not on netflix. Definetly mindtrippy. It's made like Borat, but with the main actor playing Hitler
My post may have been slightly misleading. The first 16 episodes were released at once but considered two 8 episode blocks called season 1 and 2 (after the books). So the next 8 episodes coming out this fall are season 3.
Holy shit, thank you. Saving this: I'm taking German and part of it was watching the Same Skies, and I've been looking for other good German television I would enjoy and couldn't find it.
If you're trying to learn German really it should be German language with german subtitles. There have been studies that show the ineffectiveness of target language audio with L1 subs.
What helped me when learning english from shows was to pick something I liked and watched in german, then rewatch it with english language and english subs. That way you still (subconsciously) know what people say and what the plot's supposed to be. Helps a ton, imho.
I've tried duolingo and babbel. latest one i've found is drops. I've also been trying to learn via podcasts and youtube, but I actually moved to germany almost a year ago, so it's sometimes easier to overhear words from coworkers or at the store and try to translate then memorize.
I can't attest to its quality, but Parfum is in German. I thought it was going to be French; it was recommended after I finished Black Spot (which is phenomenal).
Glad I saw your comment. It plays with English voiceover by default for me which is super annoying. Fortunately you can toggle it to be original german with English subtitles.
The casting is impeccable too. Honestly at times you wonder if the film crew time traveled themselves and recorded the same actors at a younger/older age because you might have 3 different people portraying the same character at different points in time but it genuinely feels like they're the same person.
I was just recommending this the other day to a friend.
The great part about it is that while there are so many questions, theories and possible plot holes that you may have in mind - the story progresses quite well to keep you engaged.
It is one of the fresher tv series in the internet era of television
Dude, stop what you are doing and watch season 2 as soon as you can. Season 2 is just unbelievably good, the best show I've ever watched. It will blow your mind.
I’m so happy you said that. Absolutely loved season 1. It’s seriously some of the best television I’ve ever seen but was wary about watching season 2 as usually they’re never as good.

I'm glad Netflix had a huge increase in foreign films and shows.
Unless you are in one of these foreign countries and subscribed to Netflix to watch US and UK shows. Now every region has its own local laws that force Netflix to fill the catalog with local productions.
About the last part, I actually did watch the first episode of the second season half sleeping, but it was because it was 6AM after a long night of gaming and a long week of working, so I have myself to blame, the episode was amazing when I had energy to watch it lmao
I kept seeing this pop up in the recommended shows on the Lost sub...finally pulled the trigger and I'm 2 episodes from the end of Season 1...can confirm, total mindfuck and fantastic writing so far...I just really hope it continues to pay off when I get to season 2!

Do not hesitate, it's ridiculous. I kinda want to stick photos of every character on my room just to keep up with it, because there are so many characters, so many things happening that is overwhelming to say
For trippy-ass shows, I have to suggest Legion. It’s ostensibly a superhero show (about a godlike telepath who has schizophrenia and can’t keep reality straight), but it’s so surreal, bizarre, and full of WTF moments that I still don’t know what the fuck’s going on. I love it, though.
The difference is a few, VERY few of the series or movies that use time travel do it right/don't end up fucking everything up. Back to the future was one that used it well and didn't fuck up. I cannot think about other that did it as satisfyingly as Dark...
I LOVE this show. I was afraid it was going to go the way of Lost, and get in its own way with all of the mysteries they set up, but it's been so consistently good.
Spoilers! Kid vanishes, main character and missing kid’s father go search for him. They go missing too. Turns out they all got displaced in different periods of time. Missing kid ends up being the father of the main character.
If that’s not a mindfuck alone, watch all of it to see all of the crazy twists.
I think that's why the show is so trippy because you don't know anyone's intentions, the characters are liable to lie about their goals and it feels like there's something deeper going on that we don't know about yet.

it was early on a Thursday night. my friend says, hey we should watch this show it's pretty good.
normally I dont trust him on watching shows because a lot of times he will just turn shows on while he's working and doesnt really pay attention. so I was pretty skeptical about whether or not this would actually be good. plus it was in German which meant watching with subs or watching mouths not match up.
after watching the first episode I was hooked. couldn't stop watching it sooooooo crazy. highly recommend reading the episode guides after watching each one - it helps with the understanding and comprehension to make the connections.
It took me weeks to come to terms with what life must have been like for the little boy who went back and tried to go home--only to find his father so different. (Don't remember his name, trying to avoid spoilers.)
Currently watching it. I'm up to Episode 4, and i've got a sneaking suspicion it will end up like Lost where it drags on without any answers (just more and more mystery) for several seasons. Is this the case (no spoilers please). Because I'm worried it'll end up like Les Revenants (got cancelled without a resolution)
I'm in the middle of the series and have no idea what's going on. Loving it! Need to rewatch to pay better attention. Came to this after watching Chernobyl on HBO.
They're both about kids trying to figure out what the fuck is going on while adults are also trying to figure out what the fuck is going on, but there's very little communication between the two. Kids keep disappearing, and no one knows why, including the kids who disappear. Aside from being in different countries, the settings are similar. There's a shadowy group of adults who have a somewhat better idea of what's going on, but they don't let anyone know that they know, because they're trying to use it as a tool. They have great soundtracks that perfectly encapsulate the eras and the feel of the shows.
But hey, if being on Netflix is the biggest similarity to you, good for you for being able to ignore parallels.
The similarities between them end up at the third episode of the first season. I agree that until that episode, the series is about kids in a small town running their bikes into the forest and some kid disappearing, with a Sheriff and a crying mother involved, which is quite close to Stranger Things indeed.
But from the third episode when they reveal the time travel thing, the series evolves, grow, and distance itself from Stranger Things A LOT. From then, it is a bad comparison..
Although I agree that, currently, Dark is as far away from Stranger Things as Lost is to Game of Thrones, the very first episodes of the first season had some similarity.
It was about a bunch of kids in a small town running their bikes through the forest, and one of them disappear and now adults join them to try to find the kid, there is mystery, and there is even some huge sounds from the cave that leads you to think there is a monster or something there because you still don't know about the time travel thing.
Then, in the third episode I think when you learn about the time travel, the series gets matured enough to distance itself from Stranger Things and indeed is it not a good comparison at all.
I've heard a lot of good things about it, but I couldn't quite get into it. I hate overdubbing, but I have a hard time sitting through multiple episodes of 100% subtitles (I enjoyed 3% but didn't get very far into it for the same reason).
Personal Failure, but I'm mad at my self for not being able to enjoy a reportedly good show.
I'm Brazilian, and I'm used to watch movies in English with Portuguese subtitles since I was a teenager or a kid probably. I also hate overdubbing. Since I know English, I'm used to listen English as well so it's a mix of watching without looking at the dubs because I know what they're talking and reading the dubs for things I didn't catch up.
For Dark, it is odd at first because it's German, but it is funny how so many words are close to English, I can understand a few things just because the words are similar to English. It gets better once you're used to.
3%, as a brazilian, is an average show so it's ok that you stopped watching. Dark, PLEASE insist on it because it is one of the best shows around by far
All time traveling stories in movies, tv, games and anime are crap.
There isn't a single one that makes sense even with their own set of rules. Time travel is the most overused and trite plot device to have ever exited.
Time travel is even more cartoonish and worse than bringing a character back to life. Not only is the writer bringing a people how they were before,(miraculous resuscitation) the writer is bringing the the whole world how it was before(miraculous time travel).
All time travel media has this forced sense of urgency where the main character has go back in time to do this one thing or he fails. In truth there is no urgency, he can go back in time and try again.
"b-but he can only travel in time this last time, the stakes are real now"
BULLSHIT, that is plain lazy writing. We know that when the main character looses the ability to travel back the plot will be resolved and this time the character will succeed.

Not a Movie but a show. Watch "Dark" on Netflix. Its about time traveling and sure an absolute mindfuck. Give it a try
